Staff or Rifle?
Hi all,
Rifle ofc.
1) Just think, if thief will get Staff (melee or not) he would be the 7. class (out of 9 including revenant) wielding this weapon.
2) why do we need another melee dps weapon, if we have d/d and s/d for great dps?!
3) Only 2 classes can wield rifle at this time.
4) SB and Pistol are the only range weapons thief have atm. In fact they are more condi specific.
5) Pale Reaver NPC’s are assassins, that are already using a rifle with a special shoting animation in HoT.

I want a melee Staff, Rifle sucks IMO, I do not want it, at all.

1 class can wield rifle
the other weilds a knock off shotgun that you can’t even aim down its sights. nothing but hipfire.

That makes it less boring than the Warriors counterpart.
Won’t get anything from melee staff I don’t already have. 1200 staff or rifle.
Team rifle.
Message Body length must at least be 15.
The Dhuumfire thread
We don’t need yet ANOTHER melee weapon. I hope we get rifle, as cool as melee staff sounds on thief, is as someone above Me said, redundant…
There are equal Melee weapons are there are ranged. When it comes to weapon skills, there are actually already more ranged skills than melee when it comes to weapon skills.
This doesn’t invalidate what I said. Another melee weapon would be redundant.
We have no good ranged option. Still holds true. I’ll direct you to my forum topic on the subject “my take on rifle vs staff” I’ve had this argument 3.5 to many times

to you
but to some of us, the fact its a rifle being used like a shotgun (come on. no idiot fires a sniper like that) kills the appeal for playing an engineer

Good thing not all rifle skins have that “sniper appeal” to them.

OK my thiefy friends, time to look at it from pvp perspective, basicly right now when we are forced to go d/p // SB to not suck. i found that usual chase playstyle doesnt suit(makes thief die) thief right now. So im using SB as filler aoe weapon. What new weapon can change?
Rifle- will become our new filler but instead of aoe weakness spam we will have kill potential, it fits “new core F1 and F2” that could be something like hunters mark from WoW. I would love f1 that marks target reveals them makes them seen on map for duration and stack 20 vuln, and f2 would be specialised ammo vs this class.
Staff on the other hand i would see as defence monk style weapon that would be kinda like S/D. But guess what ! We would be able to switch kittenTY acro line to new core to get working evades for S/D, what F1 would do is something thief was never good at, mark target to steal health from him each time he misses, making THIEF 1 of strong points- blind a killing weapon.(Since Reapers can have dmging CHILL why we cant have dmging Blind) and F2 would be some sort of counterplay vs this kind of class like Cleanse vs engi or stunbreak/block vs warriors.
And before i get the hate for saying “s/d doesnt work”, IT WORKS only if your SOOOO MUCH BETTER than ur enemies.
I want scepter because METEORLOGICUS
(and nobody would see it coming)

Actually staff as I have no clue how the wanna balance out a high ranged dps or even worse high burst rifle on thief.
For the sake of the high burstkill potential in melee Thiefs allready suffer from not having easy acces to many things other classes have and pvpwise are allready pidgeonholed to D/P and play high risk. HOW ON EARTH do you think this class will end up if we would be able to smash out hardhitters out of stealth on 1.200 range with a rifle?
So I hope for a melee staff which is more defensively oriented in terms of blocking/protection and so to maybe used in combination with S/D when acrobatics is made a bit better, as stealth isnt a good form of defense anymore and S/D dodging very hard and unrewarding due to acrobatics nerf OR a staff that makes you a life leecher/boon leecher like ESO’s Nightblades do with a destruction and/or restoration staff equipped (Caster assassin/rogue/thief whatever was really fun to play there)) as the Thief still does not deserve his name as he is more than ever before a “Burst or be killed” Assassin.
For sustained mid-long range dps for lazy pve`ers or zergwvwers it’s up to Anet to balance out P/P finally.

Staff, but only as long as there’s a shovel skin and it’s melee.
Sure, it’ll be redundant most likely, I just wanna sneak attack someone with a shovel.
Don’t follow me, unless you enjoy being chased by angry men with sticks.
Power Build Condi Build
idc what they give, i just wish thief was a treat again and not stealth/decap/rez pet :/
[Teef] guild :>
Thief doesn’t have a melee based aoe support weapon. Staff could definitely full this role. I could see it as a combination of Revenant Staff and Ranger Greatsword. Knockbacks, blocks, evades, reflects even.
Thief also doesn’t have a long ranged weapon specializing in control. I could Rifle being a mix of Engineer Rifle and Warrior Longbow. Knockbacks, immobilize, burning, blinds, perhaps other control conditions like slow.
I want to be a Hammer Thief…. a giant 2 handed hammer

Man, it’s like saying that all pistols should be clown guns or that Quip should be a tactical USP-45. It’s the legendary weapon’s flavor for pete’s sake. At this point you’re just trying to drown that fish.

A legendary usp-s would be pretty cool for thief… just saying.

Just because its called rifle in the game does not mean that Anet is not obligated make other classes use them a such. An example of this would be the mesmers use of a greatsword.
Besides it makes sense that a engineer can modify a rifle to do things other than “snipe” opponents. Such as using it to shotgun them instead.

RIFLE – Must be a rifle, sniper oriented, not shotgun (only 2 professions use this weapon today).
They should fix the character posture on holding rifle too, holding it near to shoulder, not the hips.
Ranger have 1500 range on shortbow and everyone is ok about it, I challenge all to play 2 minutes without seen anyone playing Ranger, they are every where!
Give the thief the same range since he becomes even more squishy since the new acrobatics trait line had become inviable.
Regardless, to the “should be a hammer” jokes, I believe staff (both melee and ranged) are JOKES TOO.
(edited by Sephyros.5217)
i would really prefer hammer or greatsword than rifle…
i would really prefer hammer or greatsword than rifle…
greatsword i can agree with. “berserker” all offense. no defense.
would fit.
but rifle or greatsword are both far better than a piece of wood for a class that relies on fast kills.
If staff turns out to be our new weapon (fingers crossed), I hope it comes with a really dynamic play style with more of a reliance on acrobatics, deft movement, and flurries of strikes rather than the go-to stealth/one-hit-backstab/do-or-die build that most thieves are known for.
I think a couple of their underwater spear skills would translate really nicely to a melee staff. Nine-tailed strike would give us a parry/counter skill and Shadow Assault would just look awesome!
That’s just my thoughts for staff anyways. I think it should be more of a flashy, martial fighting style. For those wanting more of a shadow mage theme, I feel like a scepter or focus would be a far better opportunity for that.
Thief landspear confirmed! Thief hammer confirmed!
(jk, spoilers)
Put me down for melee staff please.
Since it’s unlikely that I’ll get dual axes hehe.
After playing revenant in the beta, I think a skill like their sword #3 (Unrelenting Assault!) would make a great melee staff skill, especially because of the shadowstep play.
For those that don’t know what it looks like, the player basically jumps to their foe, then ports around them with a flurry of rapid strikes. Very flashy move and fun to use.

Sort of, but Pistol Whip has a long wind up and you pretty much have to have your opponent standing still for you unless you can root them long enough. It definitely has it’s uses, and is one of my favorite moves to use in PvE and dungeons. That said, however, a staff skill like Unrelenting Assault could function differently. Maybe it could have a bit of a distance closer, like a 450 initial jump or something. It doesn’t have to stun the enemy like Pistol Whip does either. Rather, maybe each strike can add a stack of vulnerability or something.
I’m just going off the top of my head here, but I’m confident it’s entirely possible to make melee staff a fun and unique weapon, even if there are some similarities to other weapons, but one can say that about a lot of existing weapon sets.
Either way, I’m sure whatever Anet has planned is already set in stone, so we’ll just have to see what actually happens. Here’s hoping we finally find out this week!
