will this work? or do I have mug to make it work? I have a squishy build, trying to avoid being damaged.

You need to have Mug to make it work. Basilisk Venom will trigger from the attack from Mug.

Your other choice is to start a Cloak and Dagger, then Steal while it’s casting. You’ll shadowstep to your target and hit it with the C&D swing, triggering the venom. In that case, you wouldn’t need Mug. You’ll be on your stoned target, in stealth, ready to make with the daggery back massage.
