Steal Issues
I’ve seen this on other target teleport skills too; often when I’m teleporting down from above them.

I was checking patch notes in the last 3 patches. The only thing that was mentioned was a change in a valid pathway. Which makes sense to a certain degree, like, not going through walls and such. But when I’m right next to the player and I can’t steal? What the kitten? (I actually typed kitten). Makes zero sense at all.
It happened to me many times when using d/p #3. Really dumb.
It’s not dumb guys. Before the patch if you were to use a teleport to a place where you can’t teleport, then your skill would enter in cooldown, but you would stay in place.
Now if you can’t teleport you don’t waste your skill for nothing.
“Target too close” for steal = “You’re using the Thief wrong”
I think these “training wheels” they’ve added only encourage bad players to play Thief. Before, if you use steal wrongly, you learn from it because you just wasted it. Now… too much hand-helding.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.

Please, with all due respect, refrain from posting until you’ve read the entire post in its entirety. I’m specifically talking about “Target too close” when you’re literally a few inches away from the target. It’s not a place “where you can’t teleport”. It’s quite very well in the visual pathway…
Wonder what those people that try to apply realism to games would say about this…
This is funny though. “Target too close”… that’s gold, sorry you gotta least dodge roll away from the target xD
O well!

I have yet to get this message, but what about if you were using steal for interrupt rezzing or stomping with traited SoH? What about interrupting a big attack that the target has stability on right in melee range (BT+SoH)? These hand-holding “helping” messages might actually hurt people trying to use it correctly too.

The main reason why I carry Scorpion Wire and use P/P.

You don’t interrupt it, you dodge/evade it. Save your steal against healing skills.

Not really, because you’ll learn not to rely on a message to remind you when you shouldn’t use Steal. The message is just an unnecessary distraction.

But does it stop you from stealing? Like I said, I have yet to get this message
Just wanted to post that I’ve been experiencing this. Happens to me a decent number of times in the middle of Obsidian Sanctum, which is mostly flat terrain.
For example, I’m in the middle of pistol whipping my opponent, and I try to steal, only to get that “target too close” message. My pistol whip is already hitting them, as I stand just in front of the target, and my steal still fails to activate…

I don’t know the answer to that since it never happened to me either, probably because I never use Steal at point blank range.

I’ve gotten it a few times mid stomp trying to interrupt someone ressing. Also gotten it a few other times but I don’t remember the specifics of the fights I was in. Super stupid imo, and to the people who are commenting but haven’t experienced it- Steal will be pressed, it will show the message, and will be put on a 4s recharge/cd. I don’t know if it’s intended or just a bug (I’m guessing a bug since it only happens every now and then) but either way it should be changed.
EDIT: Commenting on other ways to interrupt skills doesn’t help anyone, this isn’t about alternatives to steal, it’s about the message being shown.

I got this using JI once, from about 600 range? Skill went on CD.
Haven’t run into this yet, but I will keep my eyes open.
It’s a very unhelpful feedback message as one would expect to be able to use that ability at point blank range if they so desired. There must be some other kind of condition causing it to fail, perhaps a false positive in determining that a path is invalid.
I’ve seen the message multiple times, but it’s never put it on cooldown, not even the 4s cooldown you get from trying to use steal out of range.
-Sorrow’s Furnace-
From what I understand with it, the message can happen anywhere. I’ve tried interrupting a person’s heal from about 750 range and have gotten the “target too close” message which also set steal on a 4s cd. Had it happen point blank when I had to interrupt a medi guard’s hammer 2 because I had no dodge room due to ring but the message popped and I died.
Point is, it can happen anywhere. Has nothing to do with using steal “incorrectly” just happens randomly due to the pathing fix they did. (Similar thing happened in foefire in which you could no longer port in a straight path under the bridge due to it not being valid despite being right in front of you) It may get fixed and it may not. Until then we just gotta deal with it and hope it doesn’t happen when we really need steal.
Just another rng element anet decided to invis patch.
