Steal and Shadowstep, cant go up
Because its how they protect it from being abused to for example get up on walls.
Just look at Ink Shot that havent been fixed yet.
I agree we need an ability or 2 that plants you behind the target. It is already dumb they have a positional on backstab in a game that doesn’t have perma stealth

Doesn’t seem to stop the guardian though, who’s teleport can go where-the-heck-ever he wants, compared to shadow step.

Not to mention the Mesmer’s teleport

Shadowstep can only be used to travel to locations your character can access directly. These locations are determined through a pathing algorithm. The algorithm will try and find a path to the location you want to shadowstep and if it cannot find that path it will teleport you to the nearest location. Hence, you cannot use shadowstep to teleport you to a level above you unless you are close enough to the stairs for the algorithm to determine there is a path to that location.
Fort Aspenwood
which is why ALL shadowsteps should have shadow return, even steal, this would make sure there is a fluid and uniqueness to the shadowstep which requires pathing where as an actual teleport does not. As an added bonus shadow return on steal gives benefit to the underdog P/P or SB builds
Some of the post here is really amusing.
Thats the cost of a PvP focused game. PvP balance = boring PvE skills.
Don’t even get me started on how awesome abilities, mechanics and effects they could add to the game if there wouldn’t be the factor PvP (except WvW, which would blow every PvP experience out of the water with hundreds of players using tons of crazy skills).
But yeah, SPvP needs to be structured, simple, and balanced.
Cool mechanics, like freely shadowstepping around, would open up to much possibilities (which would be great otherwise) in a competetive environment, and therfore isn’t allowed through out the game.
Other classes have skills that work like ink shot. I’ve seen warriors, elementalists, mesmers and guardians to name a few, skip a puzzle right to the end in seconds for example.
If ink shot is being nerfed to prevent any of these, then a fix should be applied to all of the classes.
That being said, thief’s underwater skill set is extremely lacking and terrible compared to the other classes.
why then I can shadow step to a soldier in the enemy keep on the structured map? it’s up a ledge I can not jump
Actually, you can steal to places above you. As long as your able to get to that location without using the jump button. AKA if you steal someone capping watch tower it will work cause it has stairs to the side of it that let you walk up to him. Without stairs that steal would fail to shadowstep.

I do consider that broken as well.

^This. I’ve used Steal, Shadowstep, and Infiltrator’s Arrow plenty of times to get up somewhere high, that will take me out of a bad situation, or get the jump on someone else.
However, to be able to port everywhere, no restriction except for range, undermines both PvE and PvP. Too lazy to walk up and grab that vista? Cant figure out how to climb up? Just Shadowstep and be done with it. This obviously is not what ArenaNet wants you to do. So now, you either gotta walk it, or be able to walk it.

Guardians seriously have a port? I know Mesmer’s and Thieves’ do, but Guardians do as well? o.o
Looks at GW2 Wiki … O.O
So they do, never noticed before.

Portal requires you to actually get to where you want to come out – it has to be prepared beforehand. Illusionary Leap has very short range (only 600).
