I just noticed this myself playing yesterday. Previously when you used Steal while out of range of a target, you’d be rewarded with a full cooldown and nothing else. Now attempting to steal from too far away just gives a 4 second cooldown instead, similar to having an ability interrupted. I didn’t see this mentioned in the patch notes at all, but it’s in-game.

The first of many thief buff/fixes to come? We can hope!

Is this really true? I could have sworn that this is how it always worked.

Maybe all my steal cooldown moments have been suppressed because it was so traumatic and annoying

I don’t want to ruin this moment for you, but steal has worked like that for as long as I can remember. Sometimes the full countdown thing happens when your enemy is in a place you can’t shadowstep to.

Here is how it works. (And how it has always worked as far as I can remember)

If you have a target but you are out of range : 5 second CD on your steal.
If you have NO TARGET : Full CD on your steal (but you still trigger whatever trait you have on steal activation -like Thrill of Crime that gives Swiftness Fury and Might-)

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is.

Steal has always worked that way.

In fact I wouldn’t like if they “fixed” non-targeted Steal, as I usually use “fake steal” to get speed buffs when travelling.
