Stealth breakers
Ranger’s Sic ‘Em, and the yet-released Dragonhunter’s AOE reveal trap.
In WvW, any player can construct a Reveal Trap with 10 supply that reveals the next player that walks through it for 30 seconds.
Otherwise, playing against thief stealth is just learning the thief and how to best counter the class as a whole. This takes a bit of practice but eventually you’ll get it down. The best way to beat a thief is to play as one to learn its tricks, and use that knowledge against it. There are no other direct ways to force players into the revealed status.
As far as stealth as a whole goes, you still need to watch out for rangers, mesmers, and engineers, for these classes also have stealth access.

Engineer has a trait to reveal stealth and a utility skill too, both use the same effect but the trait triggers more reliably
Norn Guardian – Aurora Lustyr (Lv 80)
Mia A Shadows Glow – Human Thief (Lv 80)
Engineers also have Lock On, master trait in Tools, which cause any player hit to be under the effect of Analyze, which reveal them.
Outside of unfair situations, Thieves have a very hard time winning 1v1 against any classes beside themselves, so keep that in mind. They have to play dirty to be worth something.

Not true in the slightest. I have a very easy time killing Rangers, Mesmers in general, as well as all glass builds. Other tankier builds like D/D ele or Guardian it is true that you have a hard time winning since they can regenerate continuously but they aren’t going to be killing you either.
Also I might add that they are traiting to be tanky and hold a point and it’s hard for many people – not only Thieves – to kill them 1v1.
Edit: How to fight D/D eles is you chill them after they switch to water attunement, interrupt Drake’s Breath if they try to hit you with it, steal to them at the moment they cast burning speed (you swap positions, so it doesn’t hit you), and don’t run through the ring of fire. And don’t hit them when they have shocking aura up, obviously.
Edit2: Or just don’t fight them. I mean, why would you waste time doing that when you can just go to another point and claim it/+1 a point for an easy win instead.

Revenant has one..holy kitten.
The Dhuumfire thread
if they’re gonna keep knocking our crutch out from under us, they really need to give us something else to lean on.
They actually said there is more in stealth in game just what?! Do they mean Trapper Runes and their PU buff?

Rangers are doable I agree, but its not like easy or anything. Mesmers I dunno, since the patch, I don’t see how a Mesmer lose to a Thief on equal skill.
Also, good advices on fighting D/D Ele, but even if you stick the chill after they switch to water, they can just use water 5, or dodge roll, or use any cantrips, and its gone anyway.
I still think as far as advices go, Thieves should not seek 1v1, even the one they can win. Sniping a glass canon in the ennemy team during big teamfight is not the same as a 1v1.

So area of effects that dmg you, dont break stealth?
So area of effects that dmg you, dont break stealth?
they don’t reveal you normally, however engineers can trait so that hitting a stealthed enemy reveals said enemy. so Engi AoEs can reveal you.
but they don’t need to, considering how squishy thieves are.
the Revenant elite spec got an aoe reveal.
So area of effects that dmg you, dont break stealth?
Considering melee weapons can apply a permanent huge area of hurt around you at no cost without needing a target, no. Damage doesn’t break stealth or else stealth would be plain useless.

Thanks for the info.
I am not saying it should break stealth.
I am just asking a question to get info, because I want to be informed well how stuff works in this game as a new player.
Yeah when you play a backstab thief, you pretty soon discover why damage doesn’t break stealth because you actually receive a LOT of damage while in stealth.
They have to play dirty to be worth something.
And by that, he means that you have to do the dirty work for other classes: finish fleeing players at 20 % HP, gank single players with a teef team of 3, provide swiftness for real classes with thrill of crime…
We are basically a playable skritt race.
