Stealth question - New to game
1) No, stealth cannot be permanent. Stealth is used in bursts during combat, otherwise you stay out of stealth for awhile. The longest stealth at one time is from a skill called Shadow Refuge will will stealth you for about 15 seconds. Other than that, get used to be invisible for about 3-4 seconds at a time. And you are 100% invisible, even to other enemy players in PvP WvW content, like not even that air distortion effect is seen
2)You are a thief :P until you learn the ins and outs, you will die quite alot. Any class but mainly thief. Try SP for pistolwhip and black powder
3)Yes, we are very quick and deal high damage at the cost of being very weak in the defense department, stealth and evasion as well as shadowsteps supplement that
and welcome to the thief community, we may be thieves but we can be welcoming
1) No, short version. You can chain stealths, particular Black Powder + Heartseeker, to give you “constant” stealth. Try it. This is called “perma-stealth”, it is OP and is cried/QQ’ed about by everyone and their dogs.
2) When I played through the game first time, on the thief I would fight 1-2 mobs at a time… 2-3 mobs if I was brave. On the other hand, both warrior and guardian alts could both take on 2-4 at the same time. Black powder is nice here since it blinds constantly… so yeah you could take on more than one, without it…
3) Yes and No. Yes high damage, enough to make the up-levels QQ every week. No, not a lot of CC, compared to other classes (especially warrior).
Comparing thief to WoW’s rogue… both do a considerable amount of damage… rogue has more CC’s than thief… thief drops like a fly compared to rogue…
Stealth wise, it’s completely different, WoW is the normal stealth everyone is used to… GW2 stealth is more for tactical positioning… (both for getting away and so on…)
Also get ready for weekly QQ’s as thieves are the most OP class of them all. Looking through the nerf wish list in my sign. Particularly the ones I’ve posted there that were originally by someone else.

Thank you both for your quick and informative responses
I have more motivation to keep at it now and learn the class instead of playing something easier.
One fun thing to do with d/d is to combine that with caltrops and the caltrops on dodge. With death blossom you can pull fairly large groups and bleed them all to death. But you can die from one mistake, but that’s what makes it so fun
Just popped 80 on my thief and can’t figure out how in the World you can land multiple leaps on a black powder. You LEAP away (out of the circle). How do you leap and stay put?
I love hard classes (engineer and ranger) but this is without question the oddest to learn to play!

Turn your camera so that you look down on the character. Then the leap will be shorter.

I realize this may be like asking for a recipe to boil water but how would you set that up?

Assuming you mouse turn (which you kinda should be doing as a thief :P) point your camera down as if you were wanting to run into the ground, when you heartseeker, it wont go very far. Now if you use blackpowder, you do this quick enough, HS down then turn the camera while still facing down, then HS again, rinse and repeat. This can be done up to 3 times now, it used to be four but nerfs or maybe you can…I dont play DP a lot and with the new changes this tactic is normally used as much :p

And they would be right.
