I am competent at every class except Thief, Mesmer, and to an extent, Revenant. However, Thief is my worst class by far. I’ve never seen a thief that simply flat out fails as much as I do on mine. I want to be able to use my Thief competently, because it’s very safe in WvW when the person behind it is not me, and it is always useful for skirmishes.
-I tried S/D and failed to understand how to inflict damage
-I tried condi D/D for the sake of it and found that I don’t understand it and I don’t like it
-I avoided Condi P/D because facerolling isn’t fun
-I tried D/P a long time ago, but I was ineffective with it
Looking for some advice and build suggestions to elevate my thief gameplay to second or third worst so that I can actually win a fight. This is for WvW only btw.
Long time D/p damage here. Use your group as a defense. If you are low on cooldowns or you know damage is coming your way get behind or into your people. Use ports. Stun breaks and all that. Use your group offensively as well. Think of it as extra stealth. It’s hard to target you in the group. Especially if you are re stealthing to drop target. Give the group some shortbow blast stealth often while you’re at it. This freaks your enemy out. Get inside their head. Time attacks correctly and with surprise.
Gl friend. If you have any questions I’m free to answer whatever.
For build I like mauraders armor, wep, amulet, with zerker trinkets. DA/Trick/DD with pack runes is my personal pref for my bounding dodger build. I’ve played every trait line combo with D/P and run several different types of runes and sigils. Run what your personal pref is. I like trickster in trickery. Some people don’t. I like the condi clear and reduced cooldown for tricks. Shadowstep is a must except for physical skill builds. I love agility signet for DareDevil. I love bassy venom with the group change for wvw. Have fun dude. Experiment with it
Right now I’m experimenting with infiltratior’s signet as my third and enjoying it. I like my utilities to have offensive and defensive options for when I need it.

Also never underestimate how deadly shortbow can be. Surprise shot can be a death sentence if your group is chasing them or they have over extended to you. Same with that cripple on 3. Soft cc makes the hammer train stay away. Cluster bomb is crazy damage at your feet too. Use in combination with steal or a port for slippery targets. Poison downs with gas as often as possible in big fights

I’m learning and trying to be competent with my thief too. When I started to play the class, I’ve watched the commented outnumbered fights of Yishis, and found that they greatly helped me understand the way of the shadow.

The videos are pretty old, skills and builds have evolved, people have gotten stronger (I guess?). Yet, it’s a good resource to get started with, plus it’s quite enjoyable, and I’m quite happy the author has dedicated so much time into it.
We’ve had a quite similar thread recently and the OP was advised to first try his thief in PvE – I would give that advise too.
Try D/P with Valk Armor and Zerker accessory – Metabattle advises everybody to go zerker and to learn thief as a zerker, I don’t think that’s productive.
The build I saw over there seemed pretty solid, though – you can use that.

There’s also videos – I guess they will teach the basics of D/P.
Watched a few seconds of Yishi – that video must be very very very old, but it still teaches the basics. Just know that your #3 skill is the most powerful you’ve got.
I’d be surprised if you don’t get the hang of it =)
Some useful information in the replies you’ve received so far. I have a YouTube channel concerning Thief and I invite you to take a look at it. Guides on all weapons, but staff. Some builds and roaming content too. I main S/D + D/P mostly but I try to cover all aspects if I can. Perhaps you’ll find some of it useful. https://www.youtube.com/c/BadlyManneredSRRYXOXO

The only thing you need to be good in thief is simply:
1. Really know your surroundings especially after the power creep where everyone can drop you in an instant, so spin your camera all the time.
2. Know when to bail and reset. This is something you just have to learn from experience
3. Plays all the other professions at a decent level and know how to tell when the burst is coming.
4. Realize and accept that while build a certain way, there will always be a soft counter build out there against you. Disengage or simply avoid unless you are sure you can outplay the other guy.
Ultimately being good at thief actually doesn’t involve much of playing the profession skillfully as the skills are quite little and not complicated to use but rather its about knowing the limitations of the profession.
Ill toss my 2 cents in, this may sound dumb but the biggest tip i got is dont rush your burst, dont think just because you spent CD’s or ini to stealth you need to burst from it. There is a kittened amount of blocks/invulns/aegis ect out there and people pop them on you stealthing normally. Missing a steal puts you at a disadvantage, do your best to always land your steal. And i know your aiming to WvW, but dont forget pvp has some decent practice dummies for you to get your combos down to a T. The AI is super predictable however itll give you a solid sense of doing shadowshot backstabs, and other theif combos without having to think about it, you just see your opening and do it naturally. Outside of that the poster above me really nailed the heart of playing thief its really about knowing the limitation of the class and when you need to push/pull your enemy.
Try P/D because it isn’t facerolling.
I think the biggest thing to learn is the need to get in and out of combat. Most people new to the thief stick in a fight too long thinking they are close to finishing the opponent.
Manage your INI as if you blow it too quickly it will not be there when needed. AA attacks and utilities that can do damage without INI are your friend and should be used to supplement your other attacks.
The first thing I had to learn when I got into WvW on my thief was not to use my heal too early. If health getting low use other means of mitigation (dodges blinds stealths) for enemy attacks. You do not want to heal and then have him land another big burst and just waste that heal.
Obviously weaponsets differ as to how you play them and I suggest you find one that best suits your style. Do not go meta just because it meta.
My biggest weakness with D/P thief is laying down a smackton of burst, then trying to AA them to death (when they’re 20% hp, etc and stunlocked). Best thing to do is to burst them, re-engage stealth and let them waste utilities, heals, etc. and chase them down again
I used to main D/D thief back in LS1-era, and it was a straight “Jump onto them and burst to death”. New meta is 2-3 medium bursts and work them down
My biggest tip for WvW is to consider surrendering shortbow for S/x as precasting Infil Strike and swapping before getting into combat via steal gives you a disengage + cleanse if you need it without needing to burn Shadowstep or others if you start losing.
It pretty much boils down to learning other professions and knowing when you can hit them and why/how, and to always have an out. Rev’s auto-taunt and similar passives can kill you on engage if you don’t immediately do something about it. You need to be faster than your enemy at all times and always be evaluating what they’ll do next while making the best decision possible as to how to deal with it.
In essence, only practice can make you a good thief, because it’s mostly dependent on how you play in respect towards your enemy.
Thief doesn’t combo (aside from a few select builds) or have any rotations like most other professions. You play it as you need to. The first thing you can do is to know your kit (whichever you pick) inside and out such that you can cut down a lot on the active strategy of thinking of what to do and when. You’ll figure it out in time. Eventually responses to certain things will become second nature. With enough practice, you should be able to have a pretty familiar idea what your cooldown states should be without looking at the abilities themselves. This is essential when playing out-numbered or against persistent enemies; as someone said above, it’s critical you always are looking 360 degrees around you and into the distance, maintaining enemy locations and their subsequent cooldowns. It’s more important you pay attention to them and what they’re doing than trying to fuss over what skill you have and giving them even a fraction of a second advantage. Once you get your flow down, you’ll be able to pay total attention to your enemies, capitalizing on any opportunity you can to attack, while using knowledge of your limits and the unknowns of their kits to best-determine how to act.
The thing about the thief is there’s very little advice to be given without getting into specific play habits via video analysis. The subtle nuances are what define good thieves from bad ones. Find a weapon set you love, and just play it to death. Learn it inside and out. Recollect on every death, look at the damage logs, and ask yourself why you died, then think on what you could have done to not have died. Re-evaluate your build slightly if you need to if you consistently lose to something for a specific reason. Apply your knowledge, rinse and repeat.
I’ve gotta disagree with the OP here. I’m so bad with my thief, he won’t even let me play him anymore. When I select him on the login screen he says, “kitten off” and turns his back.
On a more constructive note, I’ve found Redeemer’s youtube guides helpful in understanding the concepts. Wish my thief would let me try out some of the lessons though.
Manage your INI as if you blow it too quickly it will not be there when needed. AA attacks and utilities that can do damage without INI are your friend and should be used to supplement your other attacks.
This pretty much will solve all your problems.
The meta is built around AoE, boon duration and bunker…. none of which the thief excels at. Doesn’t mean the class isn’t playable but it does mean you have to accept your role (high mobility and +1 on fights). Unless you are an exceptional player, standing in on anything is just going to get you killed.
What doesn’t help is that scores of players already know all your moves and those moves have been greatly watered down since launch.
