Ok, I’ve got a engineer up to 80 and done a few explorables. I rarely die. I only die when I get focused or I do something wrong.
I’ve always loved thieves, it was the class I thought I’d be maining in but I went engineer instead. I’m rolling a thief now to take to 80.
I’m gonna be doing dungeons alot, probably with double daggers with shortbow.
How is thief survivability in dungeons?, do you often die for no reason?, does having stealth/lotus poison ect stop this?
I wanna be able to melee without getting downed every minute. Can I do this on thief?

You can do this not only with the Thief, but with any profession you choose.

It’s ultimately up to you your survival success.

Also, even if things look GRIM, don’t give up and try to think a way on how to succeed. Some people give up too fast saying “meh, it’s impossible” when with a few changes (and a new mindset) they could’ve done it.

The pistol offhand is a godsend for survivability in melee, you get a daze shot if you see something dangerous winding up and even better.. the blackpowder aoe blind which turns many melee fights into trivial cakewalks for your thief

Having one or two ways to stealth yourself (it’ll make the mobs retarget someone else) is really key as well if you get some unwanted attention, it’s also a fantastic way to help ress a friendly who has been downed (especially if you can stealth them too!)

Thief in dungeons is like walking a fine edge.. if you are playing it right you barely get touched, make a mistake and you can be down pretty fast though.. it’s exciting in my opinion, as it’s down to your own management of skills whether you win or lose.

Dungeons as a Thief require more awareness and better dodging and evading than other professions. My Thief got “1-shotted” quite often in AC explorable mode untill I pulled together and understood the encounters better, then it was reasonable but still annoying to die in 1 hit…

Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)

Thats actually the only thing about the Thief i really, really hate. Freaking everything one shots me in dungeons.

A random hit from somewhere, and I’m flat on mykitten while pretty much all other professions (except Elementalist, who is focused on range on the other hand) loose 1/3 – 1/2 of their health, and quickly heal up again.

I don’t really consider melee as an option in dungeons for Thief atm, except in some rare situations with only 1 enemy, where you should be able to see attacks coming for dodges.
But if there are 3-5 enemies who will oneshot you, it’s kind of difficult to stay alive while contributing to the team.

Well said, as a Ranged Thief you are a lot more effective in dungeons.

In dungeons I think a thief’s main role is support. Using a short bow and other classes’ condition-causing rings makes you a force to be reckoned with.
