Tips on how to use this please? Also, traits and why? I really want to figure out this weapon-set because its the only one I have left until I completely understand Thief (I main Thief and Mesmer, got Mesmer mastered so much…on that note- did you know that mesmer can still stealth with Decoy even if they have Revealed…funny right?)

I know Auto is cleave
2 is a gap close/condi clear
3 is evade/boon-steal
4 and 5 are from my off-hand dagger set that I love, so those are fun.
How exactly do you play it though? Can’t seem to beat many players without making this hybrid boon-steal/condi-power…

Watching him play drastically improved my gameplay, so im just giving advice :P

It’ll come with experience, something that s/d needs. Pay attention to enemy skills and time your dodges. Pace yourself and don’t blow them all at once unless hell gets unleashed on you – but always dodge when your endurance bar is about to get full, naturally.
The first time I’ve picked up a thief and rolled a s/d my winrate tanked down terribly xP
But now I’m quite high on the leaderboards I guess. I hate people who just say it’s dodge spamming, because it’s not quite dodge spamming – it’s much harder than that :P

It’s a very reactive set, so you can play it in different ways depending on your opponent.

The best way to get a feel for it I found was to watch other thieves use it. Here’s a few links that I found helpful:

Arkadius Kole playing a variety of builds, usually with a x/x/x/3/6 base. He focuses on being very highly mobile, using terrain/distance and boon stealing where necessary. I like this playstyle most and although it’s weaker now due to the lyssa and ferocity change, it still works really well with pack runes. WvW player.

Jumper’s S/D S/D 0/6/0/6/2 build, he uses combos such as larcenous strike>slice>dodge to cut down the aftercast on moves and maximise dodge uptime & dps. Pretty old vids since I don’t think he plays anymore, but as long as you’re aware of what’s changed in patches etc it’s still useful since this was pretty close to the old meta. PvP player.

Amonatory using a 2/0/6/0/6 S/D P/D build. Uses shadow arts and tactical strike for the daze, a much more defensive playstyle. He plays similarly to D/D SA in a lot of ways, so if you’re after a more “familiar” feel this might help. WvW player.

Sizer using 2/0/0/6/6, using strength runes and air/fire sigils. He doesn’t record his broadcasts so you have to catch him when he’s online, but this is the PvP meta atm.

A good thing to remember is that whilst S/D doesn’t have an obvious burst combo like D/D does, that actually works in your favour since it can make you harder to predict.

nooo, not really. I actually respect your contribution back to the community, and quite honestly enjoyed your build’s insight and video however it just clicks me off when someone comes in and links to an obviously one of the best thieves in the scene and then you come and call him out as a fanboy while you are trying so hard to depict yourself as one of the better players out there. You may be a very good thief and a player, but the fact that you are trying to put it under the spotlight, and then call others fanboy contradicts each other.

Well I can understand your frustration. I also understand You are very new to guild wars 2 and forums if I am not mistaken. Posts like these happen on a daily basis. I’ve taught, sparred, and dueled many thieves whether they be of high tier or average. I’ve got 4300+ hours under my belt, and Thief is the only class I’ve created and have. I like to give back insightful and intuitive knowledge back to the community as well as different more dynamic builds. I don’t depict myself as anything but someone who loves to help my thief community and supporters. The people I help depict me.

I suggest using gap closes like Infiltrators strike and signet whilst dodge rolling – and using shadow return whenever necessary to engage and disengage.

Use Flanking strike to activate larcenous, otherwise most of your DPS will come from the Auto attack chain and selective use of Cloak And Dagger – after that if you can land Tactical Strike from behind to daze it gives you an opportunity to lock the guy down so you can focus some DPS.

Also don’t panic, I’ve seen some thieves who use Blinding powder as a utility when they get immobilized which can be cleansed with withdraw, and IR/SR is still a viable condition cleanse even with the cast time , unless you’ve been feared/stunned.
