I would like to open up a discussion about how thieves damage output and pvp build viability has been altered since the betas – Though I’m not talking about being back Death Blossom in it’s OP state, but rather, what other builds apart from Backstab that people enjoy playing in PvP, and how they can be improved.

I personally like to build for Pistol Whip with two signets and one skill that I tend to switch out between a grab, caltrops or haste.

This I also run with Signet of malice, build my rune for toughess/vit/heal power and essentially try to out-tank flat DPS opponents by healing more than they can damage.

What do people like to play on a thief, that isn’t Backstab?

I found it quite effective to go alone and cap points outside the group fights.

Shortbow+Pistol/Dagger OR Dagger/Pistol is pretty awesome for running over the map fast and having good 1v1 ability with good utility. Take the Thief Guild elite a snare/slow(Devourer/Ice Drake Venom/Scorpion Wire) a Stun Breaker(Roll for Initiative/Shadowstep) and another utility skill(Blinding Powder/Shadow Refuge/Smoke Screen) and basically just cap as much as you can as sneaky as you can. If you do it right you should be able to win every 1v1 with your ult and massive Utility.

I found for a good dmg vs safety alt is just dual pistols, though its not the most exciting. You can kite around ppl like crazy. But i found Pistol/dagger to be the most fun aside from dual dagger. Maybe run a shortbow on switch for its infiltrators strike and cripple.

It’d be pretty fun to drop a shadow trap, use the shortbow and the trait for swiftness on dodge + signet of shadows to cap a point, then shadowstep back to the point you started from if it gets attacked.

Assuming that would work.

Oh and i run for my healing and utility skills , Hide is Shadows, Shadowstep, AoE stealth/heal (cant remember name), and signet of agility. and Daggerstorm for my elite. Basilisk venom seems under powered, imo, because there are just too many BETTER skills to take. It barely works on bosses and in pvp it seems utterly useless because most fights last a decent amount of time and 1 second (atleast in this game) isnt really much of anything. Also, shadowstep is just too good not to have. You can jump into fights, chase, escape, and juke people with it. So many times im being chased by like 3-4 people and i use it, then go around the corner and just before they get to the corner, i reappear back at orig location and just run to my team. SO GOOD>

I use a tanky build with pistol/dagger relying on lots of bleeds and weapon swap poison sigil. Undead set for condition damage and toughness. I never lose 1v1 with this build and most of the time win 1v2 fights depending on the other two classes.

One Sword/Pistol build here and another high stacking bleed build. I like the first build better because Infiltrator’s Strike has Shadow Return built right into it. You can pull some really great ambushes and confusion fu stuff with that. Leap to a guy, place your point near an archway, chase him over the wall, and as he runs through the archway, use S. Return to catch him again. That kind of thing.

It’s not a crazy build (http://www.gw2build.com/builds/berserker-build-thief-sword-pistol-1945.html). Still uses Pistol Whip w/Haste at times but it has so many skills that augment my damage (First Strikes, Fluid Strikes, Executioner, the Thief Rune set bonus, Side Strike, plus lots of ways to generate Might) that I don’t really have to use that combo too often. Signet of Shadows for speed, lots of benefits to Dodging. Uncatchable, Fleet of Foot, Power of Inertia. It’s a build near and dear to my heart.

The other thief build seems much more suited to group play though. High focus on Blossom and Caltrops to get big time DoTs. Not much Heartseeker usage, which is nice. It’s good to have thief builds that aren’t heavy stealth based and can still get towards double digits in kills when things jive.

in PvP i like to use Sword+Pistol for melee weapon set with Shortbow for weapon swap.

Withdraw as heal skill, Shadowstep, Scorpion Wire, and Devourer Venom as utility skills, Thieves Guild as elite skill.

Traits are 30 Critical Strikes (side strike, combo critical chance, executioner), 20 Acrobatics (Vigorous Recovery, Pain Response), 20 Trickery (Thrill of the Crime, Bountiful Theft).

playstyle is basically to just be a blur of motion at all times. this build has basically 100% uptime on the Vigor boon so you have nearly unlimited endurance to dodge with. combine that with your shadowstep, infiltrator strike, withdraw, and steal and you can just teleport towards or away from anybody whenever you want.

you have to judge your offensive opportunities very carefully with this build. scorpion wire is there specifically to give you an opening by dragging someone out of a group to you. you then stick them in place with Devourer Venom and wail on them from behind with Pistol Whip for 5 seconds. immobilized characters can’t even turn so this is basically free shots. unloading 13 initiative worth of Pistol Whips kills anyone. this build is all about setting up those kill situations.

if you have to fight more directly you generally just autoattack and use initiative on Black Powder. usually you just get out though, as this build is not designed for crowd fighting.

Personally I feel this as faceroll/one button build and people would QQ saying “scrub thief”, but getting highest kills and topping the chart can’t be wrong.

Survive forever, win games, deal good damage as well.
Double Dagger, Double Pistol.

I can’t see how anything like Dagger+Pistol or Sword+Pistol could ever be viable.
The damage from a mainhand dagger 1 skill is very high, and delivers a poison at the end, and you need a dagger in the offhand for Cloak and Dagger.

Oh, and I wouldn’t ever go heartseeker. Heartseeker thieves are so easy to kill.

Run a Sword/Pistol PW build with Haste, Shadowstep and Shadowrefuge, and Thieves Guild. I used to run Devourers, but not any longer. This is pubstomp mind you. My Tourny lineup is a bit different.

I take the quickness trait, the quickness sigil on my sword, the 60% burning on crit on my pistol. and on my weapon switch which is D/D i use both sigil of superior energy to switch can regain energy quick and maybe play the heartseeker game with a cloak and dagger. Great build. Shadowstep is one of the strongest spells in the game.

Honestly i’m very torn between all the options. I like the burst style & the durability and hard to catch trait options. Lately I am seeing how a condition damage & acrobatics-trickery style could work. This is more super options than I have had with one character in any game in a while. I am very happy to be a thief
