Thief + Australian Ping
What mode are you trying to play?
In PvP you’ll find that frustrating. In most other modes, it’ll be more forgiving.
Thieves live & die by quick reactions – either evading/stun-breaking. If you’re a half-second slow, you’re likely dead. It’s what makes it fun!
For what it’s worth, I live in Taiwan with 200-250 ping. Came back to the states to visit fam and had 50 ping. I can’t tell any difference at all. This game does a great job of hiding the latency in a way that is similar to some other “global” mmos such as FFXIV.
However I know the latency is there because I also tried this with Blade and Soul, and omg it was unplayable. I could feel that .2-3 seconds and it was terrible.
So, bottom line, unless you suffer from rubberbanding or unstable internet, 200-250 ping will be perfectly playable on GW2 as a thief. (you can’t notice the delay in this game and that delay is probably effecting your enemies’ timing as well as your own regardless)
That’s my experience

I’m interested in all game modes except wvw. In the past I’ve done pretty well (by my standards) as a mesmer in pvp, do you think that’s a good sign for thieving or is it that much more frustrating than mesmer reaction-time wise?
Thieves and mesmers appeal to me due to their mobility and what I find to be fast reactionary gameplay, but at the end of the day I just wanna know if I’m too handicapped to have a chance at being decent on a thief or if I should stick to a more forgiving class.
Fair enough! Mesmer & Thief are my mains. I think Mesmer is much more forgiving than Thief (especially if you’re a condi Mesmer), however, they definitely both have active, reactionary playstyles.
Take a Thief into SPvP & see how it feels!
Personally, I find I have to be super quick to not be gibbed by Warrior stun→burst, Ranger focus, or Thief/Mesmer burst – but maybe you’re more gifted than myself.
Hey there OP,
Another Australian here. As long as your stays under 300, you should be more than fine to play competitively in most game modes. If it’s permanently over, I would highly advise trying out a class with a bit more room for error as you will feel a constant 1-2.5 second delay.
On a good day, I have 180 to 200 and the skills feel fluid. I would not even know that my ping is that high if I didn’t check. 300-400ish, I would not bother with thief pvp or wvw, pve is still fine though.
Aussie here (NSW). I play zerk thief in PvP all the time on around 240 ping. It’s fine as long as it doesn’t spike above 300.
I’m also playing at around those ping for roughly 2 years now. Its completely playable on the thief but don’t expect to win any fight against experienced thief with 50ms +- ping as your interrupt skill will be slower to fire and culling will wreck you.
