TL;DR – Thief gains stealth on the AA for 1/2s every 3rd attack.

I had an interesting idea the other day for Thief while I was killing one on my Ranger. I noticed that recently, their survivability has really been a bit poor (excluding the super elite pro’s who are amazing) and it made me sad to hear that a few people are seeing the Thief drop out of the meta. As someone who mains a class that has not been in the meta for a few years, I sympathise with you Thieves and I feel your pain.

So the obvious answer was “more survivability or fix the power creep”. While we know that ANET are pretty slow to respond to things like that (unless it’s nerfing the Ranger >_>) my idea was to add a short blip of stealth to the thiefs Auto attacks or a few of its other skills. The most common thief I fight is D/D so I’m not sure how well this would apply to none D/D thieves but anyway. All it would be is say, every 2nd or 3rd attack the thief gains 1/2 second of stealth. Making it appear and then suddenly disappear every now and then. The most annoying thing I hate about stealth is that I have to re-target you and then start attacking again, which can take time. Time that could potentially save a thieves life.

I dunno, sounds a little bit OP now that I’ve typed it all out but I’m sure you clever people could tone it down a bit.

P.S, I don’t main thief and I’m not a smart person so please don’t flame me like, lack of understanding XD. Just an Idea.

He’s on the point there, every time u come out of stealth u can’t go in there for 3 sec aka revealed, I agree with you that thief needs more survivability.

It’s for everyone. You probably just don’t notice on your ranger because you don’t have anything to stealth you besides longbow 3, which has a longer cooldown than reveal. Reveal prevents us from backstabbing people repeatedly.

^ Yeah, reveal was pretty much a direct nerf to thief and only thief. Other classes have access to stealth, but the cool downs on their skills that provide stealth exceed the duration of revealed so they don’t notice.

The first thing that ArenaNet needs to do to have a meaning positive change for the Thief is to remove the self-inflicting Revealed from our skills so ideas like yours will have a chance to be considered.

Until then…it’s nothing but an idea.

In the early days, most builds had to sacrifice survival for damage or vice-versa. This isn’t true any longer except for the thief. The thief is a complete mess with all the nerfs and damage/utility creep in all the other classes.

Now that most other classes have significant damage avoidance abilities on tap, a burst build thief cannot keep pressure on during fights. Other classes now easily stack power/condi burst along with decent defense, one or two mistakes on a thief is dead city.

The fix is just not simple any longer. The game has changed and it will take a pretty big shift to bring thieves back into the useful meta.
