Thief - Sniper Rifle
I was thinking of some sort of a skill that shoots a net at X range to immobilize a target for Y second(s)
-Chinese Proverb.
Oh look. I didn’t see that one coming. Long range, excellent damage, stealth and mobility, immense burst damage, control with damage, some conditions, and even some support too.
Do you really think something like this will come to pass? One would prefer to jump into an enemy Mesmer with open arms rather than this.

yeah there’s a LOT going on with that. 2 dazes, blind, stealth, projectile block, piercing unblockable shots, long duration, high stack bleed and vulnerability, 10 second swiftness, and the init cost seems waaay too low for these. plus there’s no shadowstep mechanic which would make it kind of boring.
i really hope the elite spec isn’t rifle, just doesn’t really seem thiefy. If it is though, they’d really need to incorporate thief mechanics to make it interesting and it seems like that’d be easier to do with staff than a rifle.
Honestly things like long range sniping will just get stealth nerfed into the ground. Nobody that plays against thieves in any form of pvp wants 1200 range “backstab”.
Also 2, 3 and 4 seem more suited to Engineer than a thief because of the gadgety nature of them. 2 itself is just a Light field version of Smoke Field with a detonation.

The damage isn’t very high, a full rotation from engineer deals more damage, but they have cooldowns ofc.

I have some really cool ideas for staff, just haven’t figure out one skill and the follow up of another.

Yeah, the Light field is just a way to clear condis you know. It was kind based on the Infiltrator from Mass Effect, so the tech-style. Agree it fits better for engy, but what can we do. ¯\(?)/¯

In all honesty, the entirety of the thief profession doesn’t really feel “thiefy.” The F1 “Steal” mechanic is about the only thing thief has going for it, I think. Otherwise, it feels much more like an assassin than anything else.

This is quite true. As a “Thief” we only steal. That’s it. Everything else is Assassin oriented. With that being said I hope they either give us a Rifle and actually make us and call us Assassins, OR try to stick to the original thief concept and give us “Engineer like” F skills like traps, bombs, smoke screens, throwing daggers etc.
