This is just some ideas to improve thief traps in pvp!

Traps

Ambush:
3 Thieves appear to attack your target, each one does back stabs and flanking strikes to remove boons and one does unload.

Needle Trap
Poisons your foe and removes all boons and gives the target “Boon Immunity”.
Boon Immunity is a 30s buff that makes it where the target is immune to boons.

Shadow Trap
This trap stealths the thief and makes the victims unable to use there F1/F2/F3/F4 Abilities for 30 seconds, lasts an hour.

Tripwire
This is a knockdown, but it lasts an hour and if you keep going into it, it keeps knocking you down.

Thief traps can be used to great affect …. the thief community has just been rather stagnant when it comes to creativity … take some cues from Kylia, Osicat, Pyroatheist, SevenMirror, Fay, etc. in the Mesmer forums and “try new things”.

I know it might not be within your comfort zone, but you’ll learn quite a bit more about your class and maybe even pioneer the next “OP build” (LOL).

Oh, and it’s ground targeted, so you can choose specifically where to place it to position it accurately inside bottlenecks and such.

Oh, and it’s ground targeted, so you can choose specifically where to place it to position it accurately inside bottlenecks and such.

Rangers already had this … we knew where you were when our spike trap sank into you.

If you want to add the 10 supply limit there, go ahead, make it so Thieves don’t have to buy it. I couldn’t care less … and it affects me Mesmer’s impact on WvW much more than it does Thieves as now people will question the viability of a stealthed zerg or attempting a portal bomb.

Nah, all 5 should heartseeker spam.

That would make them act like a majority of thieves ;-)

  • Nope thief definitely has 0 traps utilities.
  • You don’t have any mobility either.
  • You also die if someone looks at you when you’re not stealthed.
  • You also have no AOE.
  • You can’t contribute to group fights either

Sounds raunchy… When will it be out?

ON TOPIC: I never really used traps much. I wonder if pulling targets through with scorpion wire would trigger them. I might test it today when I am not too busy working on my guild’s site.

Excellent idea, Zacc. We had one thief in [PURG] that used to do this before he got bored of GW2 and quit. It caused several laughs and was very effective.

If you’ve ever played DotA, think of combining techie mines with Pudge’s hook.

Problem with traps … you have to get your opponent on them. Scorpion wire pulls them to you.

Play with it and make it your own. I imagine if you play with it enough we will see some good videos/posts from you in the future … maybe even some people QQing how it is OP … to which I will reply to them “bring some stunbreakers/condition removal and/or don’t be glass and get wired”

Similarly, we do still have a Necro that uses his staff to set a stack of marks then uses Spectral Grasp to pull someone to a very bad fate. It doesn’t have quite the range as Scorpion Wire (900 instead of your 1,200), but he is still quite successful. I love it during sieges as people pulled off walls are especially dead meat.

Also … when you’re playing with traps, a suggestion … when thinking of the traits you want to use, see if you can setup the trait points so that you have both a “trap build” and “non-trap build” that use the same trait point allocations but different traits. This allows you to better adapt to different situations in WvW. I do this quite a bit myself with my Mesmer … yet to find the allocation for Ranger that allows me to do this and be happy with it though.

I am already working on a (hopefully) viable non-stealth build that abuses Scorpion Wire and the Uncatchable trait. It’s completely untested in PvP/WvW but its good in PvE vs. mobs up to vet. Let me get the topic I made for it…

It is more difficult to use it the way she does, but she is darn effective. The best I could do is get her to 20% in which case she simply evaded until back up to full (or near it).

i used to test a build with scorp wire and tripwire. was ok but rquired enoughdmg to capitalize on the downed players. i used the build with daze on steal and s/d for daze but i ran blind powder rather than sig of agility. good defense and free daze

Some modifications that would make the traps feel more worthwile,
and even though these buffs, the traps would still not feel good enough to be worth
filling an utility slot for. Also I’d like to see a master perk for prolonging the
duration of the traps uptime effect, preferably in 10 trickery.
And also the traps should be slightly wider.

Ambush Trap: More hp to the thief spawned by it.

Tripwire: Should stay up for about 2-3 seconds after triggered to knock down additional targets that tries to pass it.

Needle Trap: Should immobilize and poison when triggered, and for 6-8 seconds afterwards cripple and poison additional targets that walk over it.

Shadow Trap: When triggered it should make you able to shadow step to its
location rather than target, should ignore pathfinding (like mesmers port),
longer uptime on the shadow pursuit.

Shadow trap should act like a personal mesmer portal when triggered, it wouldn’t be op and it would be an interesting choice.
Other traps i have no idea, everytime i use them i just switch back to something usefull almost instantly. Maybe 2-3 charges on needle and tripwire (5-10s cd on target affected by a trap once to make it less potent against a single target)

The mediocre thief traps traits be it in choice or effectivness doesn’t help either, that might actually be a way to explore for anet, more and actually good trap traits.

It’s not my fault if S/P is not popular !!!
