Q:
Thief: Which job(s) are the most profitable ?
A:
As far as crafting? None of them are really profitable.
Barriers to entry for crafting skills are so low that no one is going to pay you much to press buttons. The majority of people that claim to make money crafting are only doing so by farming their own components or buying them undermarket. While this makes you money, crafting really has little to do with it, since you could make almost as much just selling the raw materials.
For instance I “made money” for a while buying Orichalcum at lower-than-TP prices (via mail), making it into hilts and the like, then selling it at over-TP prices (via mail). While I was making money, pretty much none of this was due to me having that crafting skill and pressing a button, it all had to do with margins on buying/selling under/over market.
You can get personal value out of crafting though, cooking in particular is useful for making your own consumables, as is weaponsmithing if you use sharpening stones. And if you ever want a legendary you’ll have to max a couple crafting skills depending on which legendary you’re working on.

You don’t need to put time in crafting, unless you just really want to (or you want the xp). You can get everything easily without crafting.
For sPvP you don’t need any gear at all (everyone gets the same, free gear).
Leatherworker, jeweler and weaponsmith are the ones that you can use to make your own gear as a thief (someone correct me if I missed one).
Crafting in this game is primarily a way to convert gold (crafting materials are worth money) into XP, not into more gold.

If you want to make your own Short Bows or Pistols, Huntsman is also handy. If you’re the kind of person who likes to gether your own mats, crafting your gear is nice. It’s not a real money saver, but on the other hand, it feels nice psychologically to not see your amount of cash decrease…. just the amount of mats you have in the collection tab.

Ok so based on your answers, jobs don’t net any small useful bonuses like they do in WoW (better gems for jewelcrafting or extra sockets for blacksmithing for example). It just boils down to a choice whether you want to farm mats or buy them. I think I’ll go leather and Jewel thanks Jfzor!
Exactly. With practically anything you can craft, it will only sell for nearly the same value as all the materials used to make it. If even that.
The large bags for example, I think ~15 or 20 slots, cost a little over 10g to buy on the TP, but they cost that much to make as well because one component is a merchant item that costs 10g.
If you want items, just buy them from other people on the TP. If you want money, just sell the base materials you find.
Crafting is, in most cases, useless in this game.
I mean even if you have the materials, the proper crafting skills, the recipe, and you actually need the thing you could make with all that, the only thing you would save by actually making it rather than selling those materials and buying it from someone else is a small amount of time.
Unlike most games, you can switch your two crafting skills at any point in time.
You will not have to re-level your professions if you decide to switch back at a later time.
