Thief and other classes
I’m sure lots of the expert guys, here, will help you. Let’s start with your build, it might just be dusty.

My build is your standard metabattle d/p setup with some changes for WvW and PvP.
I have played Thief since the begining, off on and on because life happens. I believe it’s a fatal mistake to compare your gameplay experience between professions. I believe the Thief is probably the most unforgivable in pvp or WvW.
WvW especially, you need to think like a crook, a completely pain in the kitten .
. Do not ever tackle a warrior in berserker mode, switch to your bow and kite, same for Reapers as they are immune to fear.
. Dragonhunters are in my opinions, by far the most dangerous. That Virtue spear they use is especially insanely deadly.
. Rangers are easiest…
You gotta think like a dirty kitten : low on health, retreat and stalk the target. Harass and until they kitten up, abuse their weakness.
Now, If you fighting multiple targets make a small priority list:
I always try to kill Thieves first as they can read your moves the fastest.
After that go for those targets who are easiest or those who can’t run away when they fell or downed:
Thieves
Rangers
Necro
Mesmer
Engineer
Elementalist
Guardian
Warrior
Lastly, whichever pick a set up of weapons, and a build. Stick with it for at least a month straight.
Thief – Raiden Hayabusa
Thief – Gouki Kurokawa
Right now you can use a variant of the Meta build I took some inspiration from Redeemers S/D and D/P build recently and I find it to be very versatile using Mara Armor with Scrapper Runes , zerker trinks and zerker weapons. It provides damage mitigation and both weapon sets give you all the tools you need for most match ups, and swapping between the two frequently helps throw opponents off. You lose SB but it’s a small price to be better at fighting almost everything, the only class to not die to it is Troll bunker druid in WvW, but you won’t die to them either.
d/p is pretty viable and do insane damage, try to stay out of combat and gank when needed then go away, for 1v1 well you’re not suppose to do 1v1 exept other thiefs^^,btw if you have to do it,just don’t spam skill around and try to be smart.
the easyest fight is against necro, headshot hit every time he try to do something,if you have pulmonary impact on traits you are going to kill him in few seconds when he drop down 50% 5,1 f1 and he’s dead..if he has rs up stay out of range depleting his rs with sb or engage and disengage once he lose stability it’s in you’re hands.
warrior is hard to kill expecially if he runs condi berserker. you can’t cleanse all the the condi he puts on you and he stay immune to blind all the whole fight if he stun with mace you are almost dead.
ranger well ranger lol love them they die pretty fast, but be aware of pets they hurts and smokescale track your position if you teleport away.
mesmer can be a real pain do to condition but if you saves yours dodges you can burst him to death.
dragon hunters are a pain in the kitten . one of the most braindead build, they don’t even need to target you to kill you. but,you can dodge traps avoiding most of the damage, when they pop the shield of courage try to stay behind them since they can be hit there.
btw you role is not brawling 1v1, unless you know what you are doing or you wan’t to keep them busy. you have decap and run +1 where needed.
oh i forgot engi..engi is fun to have against. you can kill them but takes time. so not worth it.
revenant it’s the only easy 1v1 you have. really those guys are so predictable and they don’t have and easy acces to stability since they need to dodge and wast and evade to do so. be aware to not hit them when they use herald heal since they get back all life lost.
as utily i use shadowstep, signet of agility and bandit defence(pretty op),as heal or withdraw or the new one from dd.
lastly,i take back from dust the old sword dagger build, with dare devil, tryckery and deadly arts. it works pretty fine, easy stealth, nice damage and 1v1 really fun. a bit slow of course but playable.
It’s fun playing the underdog isn’t it?(Really ANET? Isn’t – It is Kitten now?)
You just gotta grit your teeth and prepare for a real struggle at the mere thought of an encounter, and as someone already said, play super dirty. Whatever honor you had before (if you even did), you gotta toss away! Get rid of that useless garbage weighing you down, if you see a matchup that’s out of your league OR fair, RUN AWAY! (But not completely…) They won’t catch up to you anyway unless they’re a thief, and those duels are alright, but as soon as they lose interest in you, go cause some mischief.
Decap, stalk, harass, gang up on, observe, and wait for the moment to really turn someone’s day sour…
If you kitten off enough people with your shenanigans, they might start chasing you, and having someone chase you is actually an ideal situations as that means you have effectively removed 1 player from the field to stand in your teammates way… And if it’s more than 1, then you’re really pulling your weight.
A shame that the above relies on players being stupid enough to chase you though, some players simply don’t acknowledge your existence and let’s you go on your merry way.
Just run around, cackle like a maniac and consider who’s pants your gonna pull down next when they least expect it.
We may not be optimal, but… Hey, if you enjoy it, make the best out of the situation. A couple of weeks ago I was so depressed at this class, but now I love it because I have embraced my weakness and tossed aside any sense of fair play. Now, I run away at the slightest whiff of danger, and I frequently leave my stronk 1vMany friends to deal with the Many.
Gotta love this thread. It’s a comical, true and sad state of this profession in a nutshell.
I’d never play anything else anymore, but eh, what to do .. / shrug
Personal preferences → “FoTM big numbers pew pew pew bullcat profession” in my opinion.
and politically highly incorrect. (#Asuracist)
