Agreed, but then what of the backstab that I hit on the door?
Probably either need more damage on the gate or not hitting it long enough.
One hit on the door does not contest a tower or keep. I don’t know how much damage is needed. But it often requires about 5-10 hits. And the crosses appear much later usually.

Just trick shot the guards a bit, that always works for me.
Seriously? What thief mechanics has to do with it ? You smash the gate/guards then it either gets contested or not. How can you possibly think that it would have something to do with “thief mechanics”?

It does only take one hit to contest a keep. However, there is a 30 second delay between hitting the gate and swords appearing on the map. The waypoint immediately becomes unavailable though, and the 3 minute contested timer will appear for any friendlies in the keep.
This is coming from a “Let’s see how long I can kill every yak and keep every structure contested” thief
