Staff, used like a melee (not a ranged.) uses one.
It would be unique, because all the other staffs in the game are ranged weapon, whilst this would be melee.
1.
(1) Fierce Strike: (x2): 333 Damage, grants 2 seconds of reveal, range 130.
(2) Fierce Swing: (x2): 444 Damage, grants 2 seconds of reveal, range 130.
(3) Fierce Smash: (x3): 333 Damage, grants 2 seconds of reveal, range 130. (grants short evasion for the duration.) (3/4 second channel time.)
(Stealth) Shadow Strike: Front damage: 804 (0.25 second daze.), Range: 130, Back damage: 406 (if behind, knocks the target down for 2s.), Range: 130 (Although, this would be hard to do since this thief is revealed so much, it would be more of a first strike move.)
2. Mantis Leap: 568 Damage, Combo Finisher: Leap, Range: 600 (3 Int Cost.)
3. Mantis Twirl: Damage (9x): 1,251, Combo Finisher: Whirl, grants evasion while channeling, Range: 130. (5 Int Cost.) (3/4 second channel time.)
4. Fierce Kick: Damage: 481, Knockback: 180. (4 Int Cost.)
5. Cobra Stance: Grant 15s fury, and swiftness and “revealed” (debuff) to yourself. (6 Initative.)
The Staff is an “in your face.” weapon, dealing more damage then conditions, but preventing the thief from going into stealth due to the power of the weapon.
((The damage is from similar abilities with the same effects.))

I agree that thiefs need a new weapon, but I’m not sure staff is the right one… off hand sword would be nice. But axe, longbow and rifle all fit the “thiefy” niche.
I want a greatsword. Or big knuckle dusters.
rifle and longbow? so you can shoot from distance and run away.. i dont think so
Just saying it seems more thiefy than a staff
A rifle would be perfect for a thief, it would make kind of a snipery thief with high damage but slow attacks. Anybody else think that would be awesome?
Give me a rifle. We are designed to be roamers/assassins. I want to be able to snipe people.
<3 the knuckle duster idea. Going hand to hand would be awesome!
I think axes would be sick
Thieves need a rifle with a killshot-type skill (that would totally not be OP at all)
(edited by Tarkus.4109)
People are gonna whine about thieves being OP no matter what weapon or skills they use.
Theoretically, any weapon could fit the Thief when you consider the class as encompassing thieves, highwaymen, and thugs rather than just the ninja-esque archetype they have us in now.
The scepter, for instance, could be a ranged shadow magic type of weapon that specializes in stealth and such, whereas the Staff could be its melee equivalent with defense/counter-oriented abilities.
I wanted a “two-handed” melee weapon, that matched the acrobatics trait line.
Great swords don’t really fit thief at all, but staffs would.
(edited by Daecollo.9578)
If I had to think in some weapon that has nothing to do with thieves, that weapon would be the staff.
I want 2 handed Ninja Swords or Katanas, like Ryu Hayabusa
I’d prefer a stronger steal mechanic that can interact with the environment. A thief should be able to make the most of improvised weapons
I’m loving the rifle idea! having a sniper sounds amazing. I can see tons of things going wrong with that though. For example, changing weapon swap would give us damage from 1200 and melee, as well as the best mobility in the game. Thieves would be able to kill anybody from anywhere, dodge, shadowstep, and stealth. there are enough complaints about other classes not being able to handle ordinary thieves, let alone good ones. In order to get another weapon I see us getting a serious nerf because of the added utility that It could provide. The same goes for the staff.
Anyways, I still love the idea of having snipers in the game. heres what I would put into a rifle skill bar for a thief.
1. auto-attack – unchained, plain, boring, and a little lack luster.
1Stealth – camouflaged shot – extra damage on single shot. breaks stealth.
2. aimed shot (3 init) (1 sec charge) – kneeling, charged shot that deals serious damage. scales well with crits. (was also thinking of a heartseeker shot?)
3. cripple (3 init) (instant) – simple 5s cripple. there could be an added effect, like an interrupt, or extra condition, or even a small amount of damage.
4. block/stealth (4 init) – I figure since the warrior already has a “butt-end knock back” how about a stealth block, one that puts you in stealth if successful, or refunds init if it fails.
5. Lock ’n Load (5 init) (channeled) – picks 3 targets in front of the thief and fires individual shots at each. works a little like dancing dagger, if there are only 2 targets it will hit target 1 twice. or if there is only one, It will hit that target 3 times.
I know its never going to happen, but one can dream right?
(edited by Madjack.4598)
Shortbow – ranged AoE + mobility
Pistol/Pistol – ranged single target DPS + utility
Pistol/Dagger – ranged single target kite
Dagger/Dagger – melee single target burst or melee AoE bleed
Dagger/Pistol – melee burst + utility
Sword/Dagger – melee burst/constant DPS control
Sword/Pistol – melee burst/constant DPS + utility
This is my take on what each weapon set should bring to the battlefield. Whether they successfully achieve that or not, you decide. Looking at this list, there seem to be a few options missing:
Ranged single target burst – rifle would fit nicely here. Perhaps P/P is intended to achieve this niche currently, however it’s more constant DPS at the moment. PP also doesn’t have much range to speak of and no solid way to create distance or kite bar utilities..
Melee mobility + utility – staff or fists would fit perfectly here. Idea is to have several ways to evade through clever movement while also being able to support your team through things such as blind, daze, creating fields, etc. A defensive weaponset built to last and support. Damage would be low or mostly condition with a few ways to access boons.
Id rather have a rifle or a crossbow for some max range sniper action.
i made this some time ago. This is how our rifle set should be like.
And yes i would love some 2 handed melee weapon too, perhaps some bo staff or some other 2 handed ninja weapon.
I’d like either knuckle duster/claw-type weapons, or straight-up ‘unarmed dirty tricks’ for melee. Blowgun or Crossbow would be a rather stylish ranged option.
As for tweaking current weapons, there’s always mace (with a sap or billy club) skin, reskinned sword/dagger (in a more Canthan or Elonan style) or staff (shorter length skin, more like a jo or reinforced cane).
A melee staff would fit the acrobat line of the Thief perfectly. Thief Acrobat is deeply ingrained into the older editions of table top RPGs. A staff or quarterstaff is a great thief weapon, it doubles as a pole to vault with, use for balance, trip and disarm foes and is basically a concealed weapon in the right hands.
I could see the staff being a fast hitting weapon with a daze attack, a leap and an evade. The fighting style would look much like Darth Maul, and the auto attack would chain much like the rangers sword attack (which is actually quite interesting to fight with once you learn the chain).

FINALLY, somebody gets it!
Darth Maul Style Combat.
I figure to make it work more with Venoms, thats why the skills don’t have dazes and such already, it has swiftness, this way we can load up with venoms and use them without paying the -25% movement speed penalty.
The constant revealed debuff keeps the thief out of stealth, but also gives them fury/swiftness to make up for it.
- Dual wield 1h Swords
- Fist Weapons

Sounds more like a ranger then a thief.

saw this thread and was gonan be like “thief…with a staff? lol as if” but after reading the skill stats. you do have me convinced. after all a thief should be counted on to use whatever weapons are around. and stealing a staff from an elementalist and using it as an impromptu weapon sounds like something a thief in a dangerous situation would do.
but before we do that we need to get ranger back on its feet because ranger is supposed to be the hunter of thieves. and until ranger is fixed no one can properly go up against the thief.
still a good idea for staff. i still liek the idea of a slow firing, acurrate sniper thief better though. snipe a window far away to create a distraction and run matches thieves as well.
I’m always happy to see more melee weapons.
yes plz, i wanna be a ninja like donatelo! so kitten!!
kungkittenstaff sounds more interesting than freakin sniper
why are staff threads being deleted but not rifle?
I could see staff if thieves got a big ole blade sprouting out the end and used it as a pole arm. That, or bring in a new weapon or use spears. Staff skins match thief worse than Dreamer. A thief’s not gonna bonk someone over the head with the big showy piece of architecture on a stick. He’s gonna punch the wizard unconscious and turn the artwork into something more practical, cash.

I’m telling ya thief needs mace- call the elite Bruiser or Brigand
Warrior has tons of melee weapons if that floats your boat.
another melee stick, are you serious? we squishy like paper, so yeah, pls come closer i’ll 1shot you with only one power/condi rotation.
IMHO we need only truly ranged(1200) weapon – long bow or rifle w/e. If i have 12k hp pool, i want my crits from safe distance in that way with DA/CS/SA we could be real dangerous and have some chances to retreat.
sorry for my crappy English

Thief lacks Support, this could be Anet’s way of giving the class Support.
Melee Staff feels very Monk like. Monks been known for their support role in GW universe.
So Monk Thief could dish out some major support. I would so play that.
Melee attacks with staff could have some healing bonus to them to heal nearby allies with each attack.
Also utility type that fits this is Meditation skills. More AoE support all over the place. The Steal skill can be changed to Prayer skill that grants the Monk a new Weapon Spirit like Ritualist spirit weapons in GW1.
Eh, can’t say I like the support stuff and thief is definitely not a monk so I wouldn’t want to see him throwing heals around with some kind of aura, but thieves having staves, whatever they would be has been my dream since begining of gw 2.
Instead of support, they should in my opinion be all about jumping around and some aoe attacks (because honestly, thief doesn’t really have many of those)
Also, leave ranged to rangers. True thieves like it close
Guys, why necro so hard?
the old monk is pretty much the staff on revenant ( healing and crowd control), i believe thief whit melee staff will be dps whit Crowd control, delivered in a new and fresh way: a master of kungkitten
about skins, dont forget that will come whit hot so it isnt like there wont be any new skins for staff lol

Thief IS going to become Monk melee specialisation. The reason why All Monk with Staff PICTURES are deleted from the forum is because revealing information that is not yet decided to be released and under NDA wich we CANT sign right now, therefore this Information is not aviable to us. You have to understand, Anet doesnt want more work that they already have.
And btw, information that is “datamined” but not officialy released, is exactly that kind of work they have to keep their eyes on.
So yeah, iam talking from experience, and my gut tell me, that everything ive said is right.
Thief IS going to become Monk melee specialisation. ….
Hope you’re right. It actually makes sense. One thing that thieves are lacking is aoe skills. If we get melee aoes then that will definitely fill in a gap for us.

I just….fail to see connection between thief and monk
No they want staff because they want to be ninjas, just like they want kunai (daggers) or katanas (swords). Anet already said that rev is going to be the first to get melee staff. Keyword “first”.
I doubt anet is going to make thief the first melee staff wielder alongside the rev. Might be possible but then well made thief staff idea threads are unicorns. Makes it kinda hard for anet to come up with ideas the community might like without something well made.

from what i understood, staff on revenant is part of core weapons. it has nothig to do whit elite specializations, so yes, revenants are the first whit a melee staff. thiefs gonna have to specialize into it. this idea excites me beyond words!! wanna play a ninja whit a stick since forever but mmos just dont pull it off!! Also for thouse that cant see the correlation between thief and kungkittenmaster, dont forget the purpose of elite specializations are to bring new flavors!! just look at the dragonhunter! so what of the 8 classes is more suited to be a kungkittentype of guy, jumping all over the place and poking a stick in your face?
sniper seems a more far fetch idea to me because of crazy mobility that thiefs have.

If this was some kind of counter argument, you’re missing the point. I’m looking at this entirely from an appearance angle. Sure, give thieves a support stick. Just do something to it to make it look less wizardly and more roguish.
If we indeed get a monk spec, I’m kinda curious about the backstory of that spec. lol
Do we like all get caught by the police, and then reflect on our bad action and decide to join the temple in a quest for redemption or what ? xD

Nobody said anything about new Monk has to be like Old Monk in every single way.
Warriors in GW2 can use Ranged Weapons. GW1 Warrior had no ranged options like that.
Rangers in GW2 are much different from GW1 Rangers which didnt need a pet.
Necromancers are much different in GW2 than in GW1.
so on so on.
Monks can still be major support, like GW1, but still be radically different in terms of being more melee damage heavy rather than purely touch/range damage lite.
Whatever skills the staff gets, I hope there’s at least a flashy, pole-vault jump that you can direct for aoe damage on landing similar to engi rifle blast jump.

From appearance point of view, this staff is more monk like. Which fits. Monks fight with just this same weapon as well as the other weapons Thief can already use.
The look and style fits.

Something tells me you still don’t get it. If you mean the data mined image, then sure, looks fine (if it’s a staff). But what I’m saying is the glow rod skins we typically got for staff don’t fit thieves. Some even have massive staff toppers, or whatever you’d call the ornament. Imagine a thief with the Balthazar staff skin. It would look out of place as a necromancer with a rifle.

your right good sir, but u missed my point, the staff skills you described are in some way implemented alrdy in the revenant, thats all
