Tjegra: 80 Norn Necromancer
Mefitic: OTW to 80 Asura Necromancer
Pretty much sums it up in the topic title; also, sorry about the title…apparently GW2 forums can’t handle more than 45 chars, we are all doomed!!!)
As a thief, what class do you least enjoy (or for the masochists out there; enjoy) fighting, and why is that?
What about that class makes you run the other way?
Honestly, it’s hard to say. Pretty much every class I hate fighting if they are played by a very good player, except a warrior.
Warriors are so easy to kill, even the high ranked guys. I’m talking 50-60 ranked.
Engi was/is/will be my least fav caused by all the CC they got and our lack of stability.
Lately I got killed by a couple of Terror and Power Nekros which I never experienced before. Don’t know what happened there but I’ll keep it under investigation.
But lately I enjoy pretty much all the fights in spvp.
And I never run the other way
Elementalist because they heal too much and are invincible near fortress doors.
As for tough but fun, I’ve had some lengthy battles 1 on 1 with Guardians. They can take a lot of punishment while still being able to dish out damage but eventually fall with the right timing.

I have heard that Guardians are the worst. What the heck makes them the worst? Their retaliation, condition cleanse, block?
My least favorite is Mesmer especially if they know how to act.
My favorites are Guardians and Elementalist — mmm yummy buffs
The one profession I can never seem to kill in WvW are eles, whether I’m using my backstab D/P or condition damage D/D build. They simply have too much condition removal and survivability.
In WvW, it’s usually one of three things:
1. Because they are simply beating me and there’s not point in me simply letting them have a free kill.
2. Even if I fight them, their amount of survival utility and mobility is simply too high, and it is not worth it to waste my time trying to squash an annoying gnat instead of doing something useful.
3. They are part of a highly coordinated strike team which will simply get me killed unless I bring my own strike team to counter them.
I often play engg in WvW, so I don’t have a ton of micro-mobility and have to be particularly careful about positioning, especially against builds that can close gaps within a few seconds and deliver high burst damage.
I don’t run away as a general principle though, only when I feel it is in my advantage to do so (or if I have to catch up to my zerg).
Guardians and Engis
Shout guardians are practically immune to conditions and actually thrive on them. Add in retal that will mess you up when you death blossom/sneak attack, then you’re in for a bad time.
Engis have tons of CCs will an insane amount of condition and damage stacking. Not to mention they’re slippery in-fight
But really, shout guardians with soldier runes have too much condition curing. I run one w/ full PTV & soldier runes and condition classes, especially thieves, don’t stand a chance.
Mesmers. I lose 80% of my fights against them. Compared to every other class where I win 99% of the time. I just avoid them in WvW. I need to learn how to beat them. Tell me how to kill them pls.
It is interesting hearing everyone’s take on what class is the class to beat for theif’s. I hope to hear other peoples input on this subject too.
What about Mesmers makes them tough? Is it the confusion, multiple illusions, or something else?
good phant mesmers. the fact tht u have to fcus on 4 sources of damage when ure a BURST build….. not to mention when they stealth and they jut wait for their phants to kill you. and accidently backstabbing phants or clones istead the Mesmer. they are tough. I still win against them sometimes but they are definitely the most difficult to me.
Mesmer for me is 50-50. If the mesmer is good then I have no room for mistake and time my attacks correctly.
Eles are also a pain specially the bunker as they have the mobility and survivability to run away to cover.
Shout/bunker Guards are the worst for me
I rely on being able to interrupt heals w/ pistol 4, which most guards block with their heal, because I run a tankier spec
Combine that with their retal and burning on block, and those fights are hairy.
Mesmers are tough as well, but I find if you keep pressure on them (d/p) and have SB off-hand, you can do fairly well against them.
HGH engineers. They are in a good place right now.

For me it would probably go:
1. Mesmer
2. Engineer
3. Guardian
4. Warrior
There are a few issues here. For example, warrior is a great 1v1 vs a thief, but 99% of warriors are specced for zerg/large scale fights. Warriors tend to be an easy kill because of this, but if you run into a 1v1 specced and skilled warrior your in for a tough fight. Engineers aren’t a popular class, but those who do roll them in WvW tend to be good with them. Guardians are always a tough fight. Mesmers are the hardest. I don’t know why, I just don’t seem to damage them enough. Sure I own bad ones from time to time, but usually I find myself running for my life.
Healway Guardian… people complain about not being able to kill us >.>
A skilled phantasm mesmer and prolly a good condi engi stacking confusion. Anything else should be a walk in the park for an ascendant d/d thief
D/D Elementalists, are annoying, if they successfully get a stun or knockdown up while
stun breaker is on cooldown, it usually takes about 3-4 seconds for them to kill me, while it’d take 30 seconds of constant dps to kill them..
Mesmers, with any good berserker builds, more survival than
thieves in short fights, with higher burst and higher overall dps.
Engineers with knockdown builds.
Necromancers.
Bunker Rangers.
Guardians with heal builds.
These have been my biggest problems no matter which
weapon set or build I’ve been using. ofc. there is a way or two
to counter these builds, but usually they have the upper hand if played right by
an average player.
sostronk -mesmers, my key to defeating them is shadow shot and headshot. Headshot to interrupt them and shadow shot to keep track, and keep the pressure on. They go down relatively easy when pressure is applied and their key is in you not finding them, which you can with shadow shot. I see many players who simply don’t keep track of where the mesmer is.
Engis & Mesmers by miles..
Engis for their sick CC, Mesmers for their aimbot-like phantasms blowing you to pieces each time you come out of stealth if you’re not careful.
Yeah I gotta say no class is particularly annoying however phantasms and pets are. They react faster and better than players and sniff out sneaky thieves especially where you’d probably revive yourself from a downed stated due to a well placed port.
