Thief's state
They’re doing alright
By ‘alright’ you mean that it’s playable if you are desperated to do it, or it’s doing at least ‘good’ in both pvp and pve?

Yeah, I mean they’re pretty good in both I’d say. They’re not overly powerful, or overly weak. I’d say they’re pretty balanced at the moment, and there’s even some decent build diversity. But there is definitely a skill curve, so you’ll need practice to play up to everyone else.
A lot of people will try and convince you that they’re over powered, or underpowered, but I think those people have some kind of chip on their shoulder, or axe to grind.

I put my mesmer away about a week ago. I just got fed up with the constant nerfs, and trying to deal with hammer warriors in WvW. I made a hammer for my warrior and tried that, and didn’t like it.
So I a made a couple of nice daggers, a pistol and a shortbow. Long story short? I should have done this ages ago.

Thieves are in a good spot right now, especially in PvE.
They’ve been better off before with the ridiculous backstab damage they previously had but was due for a nerf and we all knew it.
Thief is the most versatile solo-play class in PvE, while unable to compete with professions that can produce and sustain might reliably like Warrior and Elementalist in the solo DPS department, a thief has a lot more tools at it’s disposal to stay alive.
In a group setting, thief along with elementalist makes for the best FGS wielder in the game and it’s DPS under optimal circumstances is not to be shrugged off. Did I mention everyone loves stealth to skip every annoying trash pack in the game?
As far as PvP goes, I’m not experienced enough in that side of the game to give a reliable opinion, though I believe the consensus is that if you can play you’ll be a nightmare for anyone to deal with and if you can’t you’ll get rekt 24/7.
Using S/P and SB for PvE content makes me wonder sometimes why I would play with any other character when doing PvE content solo. A warrior build focused around 100b is a close second.
Good damage, access to stealth, and access to a 25% movement speed signet makes thief a well-rounded class for PvE. For PvP and WvW, there are several different builds to fill different roles. Overall, thief is nicely balanced.
My only complaint about thieves comes from when I have to fight them on another class. I think the most unbalanced thing about thieves right now is the offhand pistol’s Black Powder ability. It is a bit OP when facing off against other melee classes (just my opinion).

It is certainly op against melee classes, that sort of melee that jumps into the black powder every single time. It’s too much effort to stand outside black powder when dpsing a thief who already has ton of invulnerabilities and stability to save his kitten while being able to aoe cc everyone else.
