Thief state...
As an avid player of all 8 classes i never understood all the complaints about the thief, because they are actually one of the harder classes to play in PvP, because they require a lot of timing and making the right positional changes, on top of that they need to be really aware of their surroundings as they die when someone catches them with CC while fighting someone else. They also need to know the other classes very good because they rely heavilly on prediction of other classes moves and skills.
Sadly thief had some tactical advantages in PvP ( stealth and movement) that are way less important for PvE, but since the priority of Anet is ballancing for the kitten sPvP they really suffer in Openworld PvE and instanced PvE
I totally disagree with thieves being OP, they are quite hard to master, something i am still working on myself. But what works against thieves is that because of stealth they can choose their targets and they allways aim for the weak and wounded firts, with their mobillity and roaming capabilities, they turn up in SPvP and turn the tide of battle in previously equall fights, not because they are OP, but because this is what they are best in, this and escaping with a sliver of life left.
Currently thief and ranger are the weakest classes in my opinion, but taken intoo consideration that in my opinion Ranger is much easier to master this makes thief currently sit this makes an average players thief sit in the lowest place of the foodchain.
dude, the thief is the most OP class of them all 8, even in pve
where you stealth without shame, while the rest of us get downed by mobs

It’s good to be bad!
OP… I dont know about you or how you do things but I already have good timing, make correct positional changes, and am aware of my surroundings! Thief isnt any harder to play because i already do those things… in every character, every class, every GAME I play!!
I think you mean to say.. the class is hard for YOU to play?
t I already have good timing, make correct positional changes, and am aware of my surroundings!
For a thief-player, those are mandatory, for other classes, they’re are optional.
If a thief does not hit from the back, he’s not gonna win (exception : condition build).
Other classes tend to have AOE-based skilled, with a wider range or distance skills locked on target.
I don’t say that thief is the hardest class, I chose to play it myself because I have the feeling that the learning curve is higher than my others chars.
What I mean by L2P

You stated in another post that you always get blinded by d/p, do you really make correct positional changes? I think thief is hard for YOU to play.

so? i would trade stealth anyday for some guard skills/boons. my guard can go to cursed shore and stand still without taking 1 step and kill 6 risen on him at the same time without being downed. he will kill all of them and pretty kitten ed fast. thief cant even do this with 3. 3 and he would die fast! so your point is null and invalid. go troll elsewhere. even the latest survey says thieves/rangers suck :P

thief is hard to play. hop on urs for a duel and ill show you a lil humility :P even if u are really good i can kill 95% of thieves out there. thief is hard to master. any class can be played to a “playable” lvl.
It’s sad to see the people that respond with “dude…thief is so OP…you can stealth and we get downed by mobs”…..
Reading that actually lowers my IQ.
The Thief class is different than most other melee based and close up combat classes. And before anyone says “you have a shortbow and pistols”….please understand how ridiculously short the range is on those weapons.
That being said, Thieves are not OP. I have played a thief since the release of this game and still havent mastered it. And to the guy who thinks he makes correct positional changes has clearly never used D/D #5 (cloak and dagger) and tried to maneuver around to the back of your target before your stealth runs out….which by the way… is in 3 seconds. That requires quick reactions and good finger movement to get that dang camera angle rotated so you can make sure youre still pointed in the right daggum direction to land the backstab….
So yea, I’m gonna have to agree with the OP

had me scratching my head too…unable to decide how to respond…my top contenders were:
“wait your whole party is whiping all the time? Maybe you’re the problem?” And then that competing with…“have you ever played with a thief in pve?” they get 1-hitted all the time, stealth doesn’t even matter because the mobs seem to ignore it half the time anyway.

Absolutely, I actually just said that in another post. Even when I shadow refuge myself out of combat, the massive AoE that almost every dungeon has still brings me down. In order for a thief to really be able to stay alive, they have to sacrifice alot of dps
i ran away from 4 guys chasing me on my level 42 thief in WVW. hilarious, I was stealth for good 8 or 9 seconds plus another 4 seconds interval. By the time I came out of stealth, they are already far far away.
Aoe makes me cry….AOE is OP’d by anyone but me..nerf AOE.
Really though..chaining abilities/skills to escape/attack is the thief design.
But a thief played to full potential requires much more effort and skill than my guardian(to agree with Travalane) which can stand in one spot..do a rotation, never dodge ..auto attack(I go get a beverage)go back to rotation..collect loot/badges.
I leveled a guardian first..got bored and did a thief.
I wish I had done the thief first, even with the current state of the thief hate.
P.S. Glad I’m not a ranger..imho they really need some love.
The complaints about thieves are mainly related to WvW. They just have too many cheese mechanics that make them unfun to play against, if not overpowered.
Currently thief and ranger are the weakest classes in my opinion.
Here is a Video of my Thief… lol
Of the 6 classes I played thief is above ranger and ele and in difficulty and below warrior, mesmer, and engineer in terms of PvP. I know that sounds off but I would be more likely to run a rotation on ranger or ele as both my toons were bunker (shelved atm). Thief does require some skill but the class over all is basically designed to harass.
That being said in dungeon pve its not all that special and most content isn’t that hard so it really doesn’t matter what class you bring. In Open world PvE thief is one of the best class for things like map completion fighting some champs (p/d being the only class I can solo the risen abomination on).
thief hate has been dying down a bit. I think the nerfs were dumb and what was OP is still OP and what was UP is more UP or the same /shrug.
