Thief state after HoT release (Spvp)
“However i don’t get it why it feels like the Thief profession went from viable / decent to something completey squishy and almost uneffective in most encounters "
You can get by playing a thief but you have to have put in the time or have played it alot to do so. The problem with thief, is they nerfed everything about the profession simply because we had access to stealth and a backstab. Now the thief class is suffering because anything outside of having constant access to stealth (d/p).. will get destroyed because it does now have enough survivability. There are some builds that have a load of evades however this isnt viable against the better players or top tier, because your not doing anything but being a evade bot..
P.S. I love seeing a staff theif spam their heart out.. its adorable really..

My point is : They buffed everything too much compared to what thief got. And yes i do have ALOT of time playing thief.
I’ve been having some success using soldier’s amulet and daredevil runes. My highest vault so far has been over 10k. This isn’t to excuse the state of SA and Acro, but we have some semi-viable choices right now.
Of course I’m embarrassed as to why I didn’t see the outcome before it happened. With the addition of Daredevil-of which I do have a lot of fun with- they are more and more pushing the thief from the type of fighter it was envisioned as, a stealthy high hitting duelist. It’s now an in-your-face duelist that relies on evasions to survive which, while useful, your opponent can still bait them and attack accordingly and due to power and defense creeps on other classes, they will hit you harder while you hit them softer, and we cannot normally trade hits. The original fighting style of the thief, the stealth fighter, has been secondarily nerfed since other styles from other classes have become stronger. Stealth was by far out best option for damage avoidance simply since we couldn’t be seen. Now that’s barely viable, DP thieves only stealth just to get out a backstab, not for its utility. Even when I DP in PvP, I use more Shadow Shots than Backstabs since I’ve seen it hit for 7k before. Might as well change the name from thief to martial artist at this point unless the next elite spec emphasizes, utilizes, and weaponizes stealth in ways only a thief can manage.

So many valid points. Backstab is no longer worth the cost even Vault beats it in damage potential since it’s also an AoE.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
Viable choices as Daredevil. Not as Core Thief. These need to be separated.

This is very true. SA needs a little bit of work. Acro needs a lot of work. P/X needs a bit of work before it’s really viable. X/D needs some help to make it competitive with X/P. Core thief still needs both Preparedness and the CD reduction of SoH baseline.

While personally I was never a big fan of stealth but a big fan of the swashbuckling type the Daredevil seems to be, I can only agree with you. Core Thief and Stealth with it has serious issues. Hell, even the nonstealth stuff has quite some issues, as acro proves.
I think most of the TRAIT lines (outride acro) are close while needing some tweaks. IE DA needs a dagger training tweak, and is about there. The larger issue are the weaponsets themselves and the utilities which tend to have too long cooldowns for what they do compared to what has been added since initial release.
One thing I notice when playing every class is that the thief seems more reliant on using utilities for damage and survival then other classes. IE a Ele and Engineer especially can rapidly switch attunements/kits and pull another trick out of the box when in trouble . A thief out of INI has nothing left to him to survive but dodges and utilities whereas other classes can have skills off cooldown or switch weapon sets to access more that can provide the needed ability to survive.
As such things like Shadowstep on a 60 second cooldown is unwarranted. I think utility cooldowns need to be lowered across the board just as a start.
Bump. This needs to be seen by the developers! really good points and i agree! i can only play one build in Spvp and i cant even 1v1 people anymore!
Thief isnt terrible as it is, It can excel against certain builds. Right now i have trouble with mesmers bursting me down instantly, engineers that 2 or even 3v1 have trouble killing and trap guards.
But i have been having fun, a lot of our problems come with the general imbalance between classes, which is to be expected with all the new elite specs being added.
So my advice is to be patient with the meta, not to get your hopes up but to accept that things will be like this till the next big balance patch comes along.
Have fun with that, if youve had any amount of time on thief it should be obvious how to use it. If not ill happily explain to newer players.
