Thieves in PvE: Please stand still when downed
Fair post, just keep in mind that a lot of the time it’s used to get away from the attacking mobs in an attempt to heal safely. If this hasn’t usually been the case in your experience, then I agree, that must be frustrating as hell.
all is vain
Oh yes definitely use it when you might die, but do remember, everyone else also suffers from the problem of not being able to move, and the thief standing still isn’t too different from what everyone else does when they are downed.
Just make sure whenever you do use it, you don’t upset someone trying to save you.
.. or you could recognize that the downed person is a thief, and wait a couple seconds for them to use their 1 useful downed ability (the short-range targeted shadowstep) and THEN throw your ‘R’ at them.
As the player behind the engineer (or a necromancer with their ability) YOU actually know you are there and control when you throw your R.
As a thief, I do not have a constant rolling roster of every member of the PvE zerg nearby when I get downed. I have zero knowledge, usually, if there is an engineer nearby (unless I’m surrounded by turrets), and I have even less the ability to know if a nearby engineer has thrown R loaded, and off cooldown.
Though, I would suggest to others that play a thief, during PvE events if you end up downed, when you use your shadowstep (if you have time to look around and plot where to use it, which you often will not because of constant AoE damage and how quickly health ticks down) … try to ’step close to other downed people – it DOES make reviving easier even by the traditional method.

I tend not to care who gets downed, I try to save them as quickly as possible, as both of the targeted ones have either a cast time, or do it in stages.
It might be a better idea to treat thieves differently, but I try to treat everyone equally, I throw it and try to revive.
Thieves have really bad downed attacks, their 1-spam is weak and their 3 is supposed to be an aggro-dump but it doesn’t work. Their shadowstep is their only real chance to heal themselves (unless the party has things under control enough that they’re going to rally from mobs dying anyway). That said, their shadowstep starts off-cooldown so they’re probably going to use it really quickly. If there is a thief in your party, tell them you’re running Elixir R at the start— it’s an uncommon ability (engineers are somewhat rare and the necromancer signet that does the same thing is super-long-cooldown). This is a communication issue or you’re throwing R too soon.
If there’s nobody near me I’ll teleport to the back line so people can res me safely or I can potentially get myself back up. I’m not going to wait for the small chance that an engineer or necro is going to res me using this method. The only time I don’t move is if people already are trying to res or if I’m going to be able to rally my way out.
Sometimes we warp out because we’re too close to the enemy who downed us, and if they hit us just one more time they’ll completely knock us out. Irregardless of someone healing us or not.
Champion enemies are notorious for this – the giant that attacks Nagling for example has a stomp that has an absolutely ridiculous range and kills with two hits. If you got hit by the first one, then you will be hit by the next and killed if you don’t move.
This is coming from someone who carries with him elixir R, and its thrown version Throw Elixir R. Its a ground targeted revive, which the necromancer also shares.
I don’t like how many times I’ve wasted that skill trying to save your sorry butts, only to end up with it being wasted, and the thief being killed in the end.
Examine the situation, know who has what in your group please.
You should try to inform Thieves in your group of when you’re tossing the elixir at them. A lot of times we’ll simply use our teleporting skill for the sake of surviving, and have no idea when a revive may be coming our way.
Obviously, this would be easier if you could macro an announcement into your ability cast, but at least if you’re on a VOIP server, you can announce it. If you have a gamer keyboard, you should totally set up a gaming key macro for it.
You know what they say about the leading man? He never dies.

2 hits? it always killed me in 1.

Odd. Are you the recommend level for that event?
above level. But I haven’t done it since headstart because it’s not worth it.
