So ranked is a completely toxic environment for me right now on my Thief. I’ve been in games where people yell at me constantly, tell me what to do, etc. Even so far as to tell me to reroll as “It’s just not the class for you.” Someone from an earlier game called me trash before we even started.

Now, I’ve been playing Thief for years as well as Ele, and in all those years, I’ve never had this hard of a time in game just for playing Thief.

I just had a game where I was on a team with mostly necros. I capped home, saw that they were doing fine in mid, so I went far. Capped it, then went mid to help +1 to ensure a win. Mid was doing fine after my initial burst, and I saw that far was getting decapped. I was then yelled at the same person that called me trash before, so I went back to far to decap/cap it. There was a DH on the point, and I’ve realized since they came out, they counter me pretty harshly. I tried to fight him and lost.

Mid kept getting pressured and decapped, so I rezzed and went mid to help after seeing that the same DH was sitting on far still. We couldn’t take mid so I went back far to see if the DH was gone. He wasn’t, so I didn’t engage, and went back mid.

This continued until we lost, and of course, that same necro who called me trash called me a number of new names. I whispered after the game to see what he would recommend as a course of action in that scenario. He didn’t know, but instead, told me that I just suck at Thief and should just play something else because I’m losing games for other people, told me he’s tired of my questions, and blocked me.

I’m not satisfied with that answer, and wish to improve my rotations. What could have been done in that situation? I refuse to accept that I need to play another class because “Thief just isn’t for you,” as it has been for years now.

I always had a hard time playing thief – I still have with people who don’t know me and just leave me to die because they don’t know how to push “Haha, look at that thief trash”.
Thief is being looked upon for a very long time.

True, but I can’t help but feel like it’s my fault. I lost twice in a row. In T2 of Ruby right now. I told them at the beginning that we have too many necro’s, but they refused to swap out for something else.

There are properly a few roles for thieves. (1) Cap/decap, (2) +1 damage, (3) +1 support.

I divide +1 into two categories because, as with the DH fight, sometimes the primary role should not be to add damage but to help other players do damage they otherwise would not be able to apply.

Thief is primarily about being able, limited by initiative, to use any ability at any time. This means applying immobilize, cripple, stun/daze/stone at will or close to at will (including basi-venom). If you need the other player to push, lock down the enemy and blame THEM if they can’t shoot a sitting duck.

On DH, Basi-venom, scorpion wire, unload, swap to staff, vault back in direction of his traps (but not into them). Note, trait for trickster so recharge on wire is 16, wear down their blocks and keep pulling them.

If the DH was just camping the point and refusing to leave, then you should leave him there. Go help fight at mid instead. With a five on four advantage on the other two points, your team should be able to win. If your team can’t win, then the problem goes beyond just you as a thief.

As for toxic players, some players will just be toxic. Offer them cuddles and that you hope their day gets better. There’s nothing to gain from getting angry at them, and there’s usually no point in asking them for advice because they’re not interested in helping you get better, they just want someone to blame who isn’t themselves.

What you might want to do is figure out ways you can help in a teamfight, for when you can’t go and decap far. Probably the strongest asset Thief can bring now is Impact Strike for quick stomps. Be careful about charging into the middle of a fight, hang out in the periphery and pick your spots, then when the opportunity is there, dart in, stomp someone, and get to safety. While there’s other classes that have various safe stomps, with Distortion or Elixir S or whatever else, Thief is the only class that can actually deliver a quicker stomp now. This is a big help!

@OP Another thing that can help is running with ID and in team fights use your Headshot to interrupt the target from outside of their AoE. Not only will it really help in teamfights by keeping them from using skills but each interrupt does 2-3k dmg. A few weeks ago I went upagainst Foxip and he was able to dismantle me in a 1v1 because he just ran up close to me and interrupted two of my attempts to cast a mark and then interrupted my heal. By then he had enough damage done on me he could just go in for the burst.

As for your rotation you couldn’t have done different. Rotating is as much about knowing where not to go as where to go. The DH camping far was a fight you can’t win in a 1v1 unless the DH is really bad. Bad players always want to blame someone else. They simply couldn’t win teamfights and they are as much to blame for that as you are but instead decided to follow the crowd and blame the thief.

I agree with Xiahou and Shadow. There is one thing you could have done differently though. If your home isn’t contested and the DH wasn’t at mid, you can bet he was camping far. No need to waste time checking. Even if you could 1v1 him, just leave him be and support the teamfight. If you win that, then your team has the advantage and you have many more options.

Was pretty funny. He was pretty mad for someone who got carried. (both by his class, and by the rest of the team who played spot on, while he was chatting all game insults) You don’t get such a higher score without getting decaps all game. (luckily, the enemy team let that happen again and again.)

Has never been different in no matter what case and with what class – people never admit that you’re good – human nature, I guess.

We had a commander once, best I’ve ever encountered. He was rather shy, so people didn’t really know him. When things were really dire for us and everything failed, he came along and solved it with “minimum effort” (we once won a 5 vs 25 (without siege) (and with me as a clicker = 4,5 vs 25)). I guess they still don’t have the slightest clue how good he was.

Thief hate is real, just block and move on. Also, it’s been my experience that people who take the time to hate on you in chat just because you’re a thief are usually bad players. I’m a pretty average thief (at best) but even I know basic map rotations, to avoid lopsided fights, etc. People ragging on thief are usually getting into 2 on 1, etc. and blaming you for it which is hilarious.

This is life in GW2. Never had anyone acknowledge if I did well. Never. Well, unless they’re a friend. Hell, I’ll pst someone who was able to roll over me all game and say, “Hey, you did really well, I’d love to duel you sometime!” The usual answer is no. I think they’re just taken aback by someone not getting salty. Oh well.

Last season was even worse trust me.
Fun fact yesterday I had 7 wins streak as Thief which got ruined by team of Thief bashers refusing to rotate properly. Wonder when ppl learn play with roamer in team… Also it’s rare to get praised as Thief in spvp but it happenes time to time. It feels good after all gate you get for no reasons.

On different note. Anyone noticed Thief hater of team always leave match super fast when you carry victory? It happened only once that hater apologized.

Keep DH there while you assist mid, brake Gates, rdy up for lord. He moves you decap, then move assist. Fighting DH on point they need to be bad.

If team sux and die to fast on 4 vs 4 and dont know how to have thief, its a lost game. 1-2 DH +, 1-2 engi enemy then swap

When people tell me to reroll I just go on a rant about how we’re not running the meta 5-man thief team and tell everyone else to reroll.
Yes, I’m just fed up with those ignorant idiots who think that pug matches is equal to ESL/pro-league matches.

It is NOT a class to solo with as pugs will often not know how to play with a thief and dealing with aspects such as dealing with an outnumbered team fight while you decap.

One in team is fine you can play it well, just a matter of “git gud”

I have to disagree. Playing any class is selfish if you look at it like this. Thief brings special abilities that can change the game. But you need others on your team to play as a team, along with the thief! However most people keep on playing their own game, just as selfish, and call out a thief for doing what the thief should be doing..

Problem is, you need to be a decent thief (and player in general) to pull off the advantage a thief can bring. And it is way easier on other players if you bring that tank everyone wants on their team.

If you like playing a thief, play a thief and you can do well. If others complain, tell them they could adjust just as much as you could.

In short, show them thieves can be valuable. Just like any other class.

Pugs are Pugs are Pugs. Random group is random. If people want to be competitive then they need to make the effort to form a group and have voice comms, etc. Instead of being trendy and blaming a thief for their problems.

Solo queue is exactly what you get – unknown team comp, unknown player skill/knowledge and very little communication.

Why nerds still rage when they accept these conditions by queuing alone is beyond me.

Overall, play what you want to play. Swiftly ignore the tools.

Being hated on for being a thief is all to common in PvP. Same with Warrior.

The best Thief I have ever seen grace this game. I’ve been watching his stream/highlights everyday and it’s making me a better player. He was recommended by Beyond B, who is also really great.

Every couple of games i get insulted for playing thief, i report a lot of people but i feel like reports are doing nothing the insults keep coming from new people like they don’t even care that the report system exists.

If you are a thief don’t just block them, report for verbal abuse if they do it, the game needs a better environment.

You should probably tell them to reroll as well to a different Meta class since even OP classes can be played wrong.

Best advice I can give:

Never take anyone seriously who thinks they can evaluate you as a player from a single PvP game.

Just reroll thieves are dead

Also you don’t have any Idea how to rotate or focusing kitten…
So i truly believe you just got carried for those 7 games.

And Please…don’t Facetank every Rangers’s Pet or every DH’s traps… It was kinda hilarious killing a thief so fast.
