Too scared to start Thief
No, because my life isn’t ruled by hyperbole, and I have a completely realistic expectation that Thief will always be at least OK-ish. The worst profession in this game is still playable in all modes.
Relax, it won’t be nerfed…..to oblivion.
Sounds like you may be better suited to playing a ranger.
Pros- If you get scared you can hide behind a bear and range with a bow (Long or Short)
Cons- Virtually none

I double dagger dare you to say that in the Ranger forums
I just started a thief. The class is loads of fun to play. Btw, every class is afraid of nerfs in this game every patch.
You are afraid of nerfs on the two game modes where the nerfs dont really matter
Thieves are pretty underwhelming in PvE. Disappointing that ArenaNet keeps dishing out unwarranted nerfs across the board instead of doing the sensible thing and separating PvE from PvP.
13 days left guys, come on now, don’t lose hope so suddenly.
And pve nerfs are not all that important or common. If anything they nerf or buff an encounter, I can’t recall any nerf that was specific to pve for thief.

Make a thief! I’m leveling a 2nd one right now so I can have 2 different builds available It’s a really fun class that’s quite different from everything else so it takes a while to get up to speed before you feel confident with it.
Highest Solo Queue Rank Achieved: 40
Highest solo-join Team Queue Rank Achieved: 198
DO IT!!!!!! Super fun class, oddly enough I just started a second thief as well rocking a char this time around. Even through tje nastiest nerfs iv never hung my daggers up and rerolled, just reworked how I did what I do
In PvE a thief is very much wanted in dungeons for the incredible blind spam, stealth, and most importantly very high DPS.
“Memories are nice, but that’s all they are.”
Specs considered OP by non thief players:
- Pistol Whip (got its own thread in SPVP subforum
- D/P “permastealth”
- S/D “ultimate duelist”
- Shortbow
- D/D CnD
- stolen skill Whirling Axe
- stealth
- Sleight of Hand
P/D will be the next meta if these things get nerfed, and will be more irritating than any other spec in this game to fight against

I have yet to see so much QQ about perplex Engineers than D/P.
Seems like 15 stacks of confusion isn’t as powerful as any thief build.

Yea but the issue people have (someone posted above) which nerf’s is that they are across the board. Take the pistol whip 15% dmg nerf from a while back. That was 15% less damage period. So, because it was considered “OP” against players thieves were left with 15% less damage in dungeons etc. At the time this made thieves less viable and fed the whole “go zerk war or go home” attitude that we all know and love.
If you don’t want to fear nerfs, then roll a warrior. They’ll always be in a good place because they were badly designed from the start (har har har, lets fill a class up with passive abilities, highest hp, highest armor, and high damage, and some of the best buffs out there)

Well if it was 15% I’m inclinded to say it was a good move, because I can get my pw in dungeons to cleave for 10-14k and im not even full zerker and it can be built to be near spammable for the duration of an encounter (LoS pulling). Issue is they aren’t nerfing other obvious “op pve skills” but again, pve balance is never going to exist. Their offices just have warriors running around and speed clearing, last time we saw anyone there play a thief he was dead 90% of the video.

Also ranger pets can give you buffs if you need.

“Brown bears are tremendously strong and fiercely protective. They throw themselves into combat selflessly to distract attention from their masters, and use their great strength to shrug off blows that would kill any other creature.”

The real problem is with anets policy of being super secretive then nerfing random things just out of the blue. Most other games with each patch you kind of know what’s coming with possibly a few minor tweeks here and there that weren’t already discussed.
With anet each patch is a grab-bag of anxiety. Sure they “preview” some things but their lack if communication is astounding (no the player run wiki is NOT good enough for official documentation). Reason that thing came into being with GW1 was due to how abysmal the documentation was to begin with.
What they really need is a public test server. Reason they do not have one is their morbid fear over AH price speculation. That’s a really really stupid reason not to properly QA your product before release. They had to patch this last event 3 times now to fix what they flubbed out of the gate. Seriously that is just sad.

Not if you reroll to a ranger!
Thank you Viking Jorun.5413 for backing up my statements

Thank you all Very much for your feedback!
I think I’ll still give re rolling from Engineer a break though as I feel it’s a chore to level up from 0-80 rather than explore deeper with a main character; nonetheless, great feedback on a Forum section I’m not familiar with ;D

Ok hold up…. i cant let this go in this thread even if it isn’t a Ranger thread. OP i have to say this is not true in the slightest. First off, the profession most voted as being in danger and looked at for a CDI was RANGER. Yes u could in theory hide behind a bear with dual bows. but have fun earning little respect from any player in this game. Ranger does the WEAKEST burst DPS, the pet is key damage and dies A LOT, conditions will met them with minimum pressure and by this games standard u will lack very lil to non existent team support. if u don’t wanna roll thief for nerf fears ranger is NOT the place to go. if any class feels nerfed as much as thieves ts gonna be ranger.
Thief on the other hand can still fair well in PvE and PvP(WvW) environments.
Thief damage is still better than ranger BY A MILE even if they get a few tweaks here and there.
Thief can also run a hide in bad situations: Its called stealth and its arguably better then a bear and bow.
Thieves can supply some team support with utilities like smokescreen and venoms( i said could not that they were any good). Not to mention the power of shadow refuge.
Oh i mentions stealth right? yea thieves can stealth entire parties and go sneak past some trash when needed.
SB on thief can blast area effects pre fight adding even more team support.
Roaming in WvW is still effective as thief as people still have trouble handling stealth and stealth is very nice for any encounter.
so there OP my take on how thief is looking like and even though your gonna reroll engi i hope u have a good time and do eventually return to try thief someday.
guard,mes,thief,ele,engi, warr sidekicks.
The World isnt fair. the same can apply to a game

sorry, gotta correct you a little here; Rangers can produce bursts over 37k in PvP, and closer to 50k (theoretically, highest recorded hit in WvW is about 29.5k so far) in WvW/PvE. These builds are quite situational, however in WvW, they’re possible to use as sniping setups.
The pet dies a lot because players chose the wrong traits and pets for the occasion. Most think Empathic Bond is your only way to survive conditions, thus you kill your own pet before it can even do something.
Many also think that just because rolling zerker LB with a meatshieldbear works in PvE, it also works in WvW, yet they couldnt be more wrong.
As for nerfs, Rangers win’s hands down. Simply because pretty much all aspects of the ranger has issues, to a great extent. The mechanic can be countered by simply killing it. We cannot prevent that. Most builds force you to rely on the most unreliable aspect of your class. You cannot avoid that.
And if we by some miracle, manage to get a build going that is able to roflstomp warriors, guards, eles and mesmers. We will be nerfed three times at once. Because looking over the ranger nerfs, i am by now certain that there is 3 teams working independently of eachother.
One team finds a way to nerf traits, the second fix bugs or change our weapon skills (at this point, a large portion of ranger performance is due to unintended stuff. We are to some degree carried by bugs and glitches) the third team nerf our already broken pets. And usually, they manage to do three nerfs that each, independently, would fix the problem at hand. Yet for “good measure” they nerf all aspects to make sure there is no way we can use that build again.
The ranger does not get buffs, it only get temporary changes that will be nerfed very soon. If your damage goes up, expect trait nerfs in the next balance patch. If your utilities get de-bugged, expect pet nerfs in two weeks time. If you by miracle find a build able to do damage.
HOWEVER, if you find a serious bug limiting ranger performance, you can go through all the correct channels, multiple times, yet it will not get fixed (coughbroken pet traitscough). If you find out a trait, or weapon, or pet, or something does not work after a patch, then maybe, it will be adressed in the next balance patch, just maybe.
The whole CDI thing, i am delighted by it, because i am absolutely sure that by the time any of the proposed changes arrive, it will be 70% less helpful and 90% more damaging to the profession then it would be without.
Mark my words, when they gonna “try fix pet F2” and “Sword auto rooting” in the upcoming feature build, they will nerf god knows what to make sure we didn’t get any real profit or progression from before the patch.
As for ranger support, i can but laugh at your thief all day long. The only proper support thieves got is venomshare and boonsteal. Which in and of itself is very good, in PvP/WvW.
You cannot apply; perma regen with the regen power rangers can, perma swiftness with the ease rangers can, 60% protection uptime, 80% fury uptime, might stacking, waterfields, group condition cleansing, direct DPS increase, instant revive of allies, numerous combo fields, most on relatively short CD’s.
Also if you roll ranger, DO NOT USE BOW’S. Regardless what you imagine the class to be, it does 20% more damage from melee, and you are 80% more likely to survive an encounter in WvW when rolling our melee weapons.
