My mage has around 2100 armor…. a heartseeker spammer was hitting me for 7k, 8k, 9k whatever….
I logged to my warrior with 3200+ armor… sucked down a 12k crit (no idea what skill it was) and I just logged off….
I have no idea what they do, or how they do, and I don’t care. As far as I’m concerned thieves are just completely broken.
Playing the engineer “as intended” is simply not viable.
you need to calculate it off the total armour score not just toughness, but it should reduce the damage yes.
Also lol at warrior complaining about a 12k crit ><

This has nothing to do with a warrior, and everything to do with it being my highest armored class sucking down the biggest crit I’ve ever seen.
Odds are it was backstab, could have been mug… whatever… I don’t care.

Toughness does mitigate damage….bunker just isnt about how much tough you stack but what skills/traits you got along with it
3100 armor is roughly 45% reduction in all direct damage.

I never experienced this with my previous build with 900 t. If +500 t. makes no difference what is the point to have it? If I had my previous build i would be BS by 12000? steal 10000?

1400 toughness is only like 14% more reduction in damage than you would have in FULL berserker gear. So that 8000 would have been around 9.3k on a full berserker gear. Nothing unusual about that. Saving 1.3k dmg on that attack, which seems like a tiny amount, but it adds up quickly in combat.
you just got to remember that 1 point of armour is not a specific damage reduction, its actually a divider.
And armour is defense (from armour/shield) + toughness
If you go from 900 to 1400 toughness you should take around 20-25% less damage in total
give or take a bit from differing traits and such.

I belive it was killshot or eviscerate, in the end that 2 skills got best DAMAGE /hit ingame

Backstab damage is doubled if you are behind your target
Skill damage coeficient is 1.2 – facestab // 2.4 backstab
Considering an thief can get over 3200 power -120 critical damage (full glas cannon)
we add food buff / 25 bloodlust staks / 25 might stacks – thief can reach 4200-4500 power / 120 crit damage
add 5% (dagger training)+ 5%(flanking strikes) +10% (exposed weakness) +10%(first strikes) + 20%(executioner) from traits = 50% damage modifier , mathematicly is posible to hit with same skill for 5k damage or 20 k damage .
Direct damage formula is – Damage done = (weapon damage) * Power * (skill-specific coefficient) / (target’s Armor)
SITUATION 1
DAMAGE DONE = 952 (weapon dmaage) * 4300 (power ) * 2.4 (backstab skill coeficent) * 150% (traits ) * 2.7 (Critical ) / 2400 armor = result an 16579 backstab
SITUATION 2
DAMAGE DONE = 952 (weapon dmaage) 3200 ( no bloodlust/might stacks) 1.2 (facestab skill coeficient)* 115% (traits- no flanking strikes / target got no condition/ you don’t have over 6 initiative /target got over 50% hp) * 2.7 (critical ) =5517 face backstab (Critical ) -2000 non critical
ofc you can get more power – i belive you can reach 4700 full ascended /ruby orbs
Also i did not took in consideration sigil of force 5% damage or any defensive buffs /protection -signet of judgement / -% damage under ….. etc .
And vulnerability /frenzy (take extra 50% damage)
Those could increase even more the damage diference from same player to same target

Just curious how you can reach in the 4k+ power numbers. I tried running the numbers in full berserker gear, scholar runes , all ascended berserker jewelry, 30 trait for power, even assn. signet and I get around 2800 tops with power food/oil. Bloodlust would put it just over 3k. Please lemme know your secrets, although I don’t agree with running this way all the time, I would like to buy a set just to experiment, thanks.

But i made the calculation to point that there are a lot of factors that can influence
Damage / backstab
-skill specific coeficient 2.4 vs 1.2 (backstab vs facestab)
115% assasin signet1.05 sigil of force
traits :
10% if your initiative is over 6
10% if your target got an condition
20% if your target is below 50% hp
5% with dagger
5% from behind
bloodlust stacks
Might stacks (you can get 15 stacks of might in less then 1 second by activating 3 signets with signets of power trait)

There didn’t seem to be any sort of mitigation on the damage from backstab. Even the mug which was hitting for 4.5k lol which hopefully gets nerfed as per the SoG video.

That’s not what happened, you’re mistaken. Toughness mitigates any and all physical damage but does not affect condition damage. That’s how the game’s defence mechanics work, that’s how it always has worked and probably always will work.
Repeating yourself again after being told how it works isn’t going to make it so that you’re correct and you didn’t mistakenly see something else over what actually occurred.

Incurafy is correct. Serjical, you are simply experiencing a reaffirmation of what you think happens by thieves hitting you for a lot, but you simply are totally wrong, there’s no way around it.
Toughness mitigates backstab damage like everything else. I don’t think I’ve seen a backstab over around 6k on my mesmer in tank form for a long time. Additionally, protection will reduce the damage by another 33%, obviously being a huge factor in how much damage you will do.
My Engineer with 3200 Defense has never recieved hits more than 5k per single strike. And mostly it was something like 2-3k

12k is very unlikely – I’ve run a stupid build where you stack 18 might and have executioner and use infiltration runes (10% vs targets with less than 50% health) and I hit glass that are under 50% for 13-14k in sPvP on a BS.

The damage in sPvP is WAAAAAY lower than in WvW, this is a pretty well known fact.
he COULD have been hit for 12k on his warrior but it wouldn’t have been just the thiefs doing, he’d have needed to be in optimal condition compared to absolutely no extra effects on his warrior of 3200 armour, possibly even with vulnerability stacks on or such.
But it all comes down to yes, toughness/armour reduces backstab damage like all physical damage, but it has a high multiplier (not the highest in game mind) if they land it from behind.
That or he tried to Frenzy HB the thief and ate a Backstab…

From what I read Ez, you play a necromancer. Necromancer is probably one of thieves worst enemies and one of the hardest to kill classes in the game.

I never pay attention to the red numbers popping up while I’m getting hit, but I always pay attention to the white numbers while attacking. Sometimes my condition damage (or any other damage) text will appear in such a way, and at the same time as my backstab that visually, it will look like I critted for 17k when in fact I only BS for 7k and the digit 1 just happened to align in front of the 7.
It would be nice to see a combat log and dead body =)
I play a full glass cannon thief and a full Power/Toughness/Vitality warrior and can definitely say the damage is mitigated. My warrior has survived the burst from two glass cannon thieves focus firing a few times. One thief simply isn’t going to kill him in most situations.
My thief on the other hand, falls over in a stiff breeze but is really fun to play. High risk, high reward. I can hit for ridiculous damage but can also be taken out very easily by a thief with good burst if I don’t see them coming.

It took some testing by people to prove it doesn’t work and later Anet confirmed. Thus proving bugs DO happen and sometimes things DON’T work as stated.

Well you only have your combat log as your source of information which is very inadequate in illustrating what happened before you pop.
I suspect that you have suffered from multiple stack of Vulnerability and a Thief can apply at least 5 stacks on a Crit hit (sometimes more stacks). That’s 5% increase dmg, and if the thief specs Exposed Weakness, another +10% increase dmg, then all other dmg source like Crit Dmg mod, etc.
May not be seen often, but possible under those circumstances.
On a flip side.

Besides, nobody ever claim that bugs NEVER happen. You just have to come up with proof, like those “people”, to convince everyone interested that it is in fact a bug.

Screen? Or, better, video? Sorry for being so skeptical but it simply IS NOT possible. With 4-6 stacks of might on, on a 3200 toughness target, my backstab hits for 5-6k. Also, there are a lot of ways to counter a backstab as a warrior:
Hammer knockback
Shield stance
EVADE
Endure pain
Fear me
Shield stun
Same for the ele:
Air #5
Lightning flash
Vapor form
Armor of earth (33% damage reduction, not bad at all)
EVADE

There are other ways to test your hypothesis whether your observation is true or not, but it will require that you have to run some testing.

I’d have to disagree my main post was a question not a statement to be ridiculously misinterpreted as conclusive evidence. If I were making a conclusive statement I would have provided thorough testing and posted it as such and not as a question.
I posted my question out of curiosity if there were a bug relating to the damage I seen on Anet provided information tool. I do know how toughness is supposed to affect direct damage but the numbers I seen made me question it enough to post my curiosity on this forum in chance someone else had noticed a bug or trend of others with similar question.
I’d like to see where you came to the conclusion of where I “spit on the whole wiki”. When the example provided by myself was to point out that bugs do exist. The inclusion of “wiki” into my comment was trivial and perhaps in hindsight would have been best said “Anet description” so as not to agitate wiki advocates into over sensationalism.

Oh look at the drama I stirred up….
I was running down the road.. sword/warhorn for speed, and leaps, as I was trying to get back to the guy that just killed my ele, longbow on switch, I’m pretty sure I have no source of frenzy…. I have no source of quickness
I can only assume that I found the thief I was looking for.
I took a few hits from pistol shots (3 maybe 4)… no doubt I could have had 10-20 stacks of vulnerability, as I am bad at using shake it off and had just spec’d out of shrug it off.
I had 3200+ total armor, with the +200 if I’m rooted or slowed.. whatever….
So he stealths, and I’m left running in circles swinging my sword, and then blammo.. dead… and stomped in stealth for good measure.
I didn’t care enough to study the combat log, I just looked for a sec, said “wtf” to myself, and logged off. I didn’t come here to demand a nerf to thief damage, but yeah, maybe the OP is on to something, ‘cause that’s crazy damage, and IMO my warrior has pretty high armor.
I do think thieves are completely broken. If a high armor class loses to conditions, all is well in the world, but if a high armor class loses to glass cannons doing direct damage.. then wtf is the point of armor?
…but hey, I’m not crying that the damage needs a nerf, I think stealth needs the nerf. ‘Cause stealth is what lets people do these absurd glass cannon spec’s with no downside.
And stomping in stealth is a load of kittens.

I’ve seen a warrior Kill Shot someone for 33,000 damage, the worst part is that he did it from a safe distance .

I run a might stacking “Signet Use” BS build, dropped on a Warrior who had just popped Frenzy (w/o Endure Pain)-
Mug hit for 10k
CnD for 11k
Backstab didn’t land because the Warrior was downed before he knew what hit him.
3500 attack + 25 BL stacks + 16x Might w/ Fury + Swift and ASignet’s 15% bonus.
The point is, if you aren’t paying very close attention, it’s very easy to get loaded up with enough Vuln that your paper-doll Toughness no longer provides it’s total benefit.
Defensive builds in this game are successful if they have two things – durability/regen + escapability. The Warrior has access to both.

This has nothing to do with a warrior, and everything to do with it being my highest armored class sucking down the biggest crit I’ve ever seen.
Difference between light and heavy armor is 300 – on a bunkery build with 3k armor in total that is like 10%.
I made my thief build especially for some average resistance to stay longer on battlefield. I have 1400 toughness (full exotic) which I think is quite high for this class and yet I have been destroyed by some some glass canon hitting me by Steal 8000, CnD 5500, BS 10200(1vs1 match). I never experienced this with my previous build with 900 t. If +500 t. makes no difference what is the point to have it? If I had my previous build i would be BS by 12000? steal 10000?
Other side is hitting someone in light armor (power 3000, critic. 90%) and doing him 3000 damage by BS. I found that I got Higher damage on warriors then on mesmers or necros. STRANGE INDEED!?Backstab damage is doubled if you are behind your target
Skill damage coeficient is 1.2 – facestab // 2.4 backstab
Considering an thief can get over 3200 power -120 critical damage (full glas cannon)
we add food buff / 25 bloodlust staks / 25 might stacks – thief can reach 4200-4500 power / 120 crit damage
add 5% (dagger training)+ 5%(flanking strikes) +10% (exposed weakness) +10%(first strikes) + 20%(executioner) from traits = 50% damage modifier , mathematicly is posible to hit with same skill for 5k damage or 20 k damage .
Direct damage formula is – Damage done = (weapon damage) * Power * (skill-specific coefficient) / (target’s Armor)
SITUATION 1
DAMAGE DONE = 952 (weapon dmaage) * 4300 (power ) * 2.4 (backstab skill coeficent) * 150% (traits ) * 2.7 (Critical ) / 2400 armor = result an 16579 backstab
SITUATION 2
DAMAGE DONE = 952 (weapon dmaage) 3200 ( no bloodlust/might stacks) 1.2 (facestab skill coeficient)* 115% (traits- no flanking strikes / target got no condition/ you don’t have over 6 initiative /target got over 50% hp) * 2.7 (critical ) =5517 face backstab (Critical ) -2000 non critical
ofc you can get more power – i belive you can reach 4700 full ascended /ruby orbs
Also i did not took in consideration sigil of force 5% damage or any defensive buffs /protection -signet of judgement / -% damage under ….. etc .
And vulnerability /frenzy (take extra 50% damage)
Those could increase even more the damage diference from same player to same targetI’ve seen a warrior Kill Shot someone for 33,000 damage, the worst part is that he did it from a safe distance .
this was a bug with pierce…
Don’t know, how exactly it bugged out, but the damage would keep growing as you pierced additional targets.
Plus, it was probably an upleveled lev 10^^
The mob has spoken and the turrets shall be burnt at the stake.
It was 1 target so there was no extra pierce damage.

It takes a ton of special circumstances to KS someone for that much.
Although yes, killshot is a very powerful single target ability. My guardian has 3.2k armor and has eaten 9k killshots.
