I want to roll a Thief to use as my Roaming char in WvW (Have a level 80 Zerker LB Ranger for Zerg Surfing.) So I want to know for you experienced Thiefs as how to level up, and what seems to be effective in WvW, I have heard to use Asura as my race because of the animation difference and it’s hard telling what their going to do.

Thank you for all those who post!

Craft to level up. If don’t have the gold to level 100% from crafting or just don’t want to spend that much, then I recommend using p/d with sb for solo leveling and p/p with sb for dungeons.

P/d is great for solo since you can use cloak and dagger to get frequent stealth attacks which give you good damage from the burst and survivability from the stealth. D/d is a pain since you have to constantly run behind mobs that are trying to face you and s/d doesn’t have a very good stealth attack for PvE. You can also quickly get distance from your target when you need it to kite mobs with skill #3.

P/p is good for dungeons while leveling since you’re squishy as a low level in dungeons and it allows you to stay on your feat while you get used to the class.

d/d condition damage with death blossom and s/p power using black powder to blind and PW to evade are the two most efficient leveling builds. of the two d/d is probably the faster just because it handles content that you are under leveled for better since conditions don’t glance. with it you just drop caltrops and them spam death blossom and kite the enemies till they die. with s/p you black powder to pulse blind on enemies then you let your auto attack and, depending on the situation, PW to kill them.

…. I have heard to use Asura as my race because of the animation difference and it’s hard telling what their going to do.

FYI. The Asura have a unique racial animation for their dodge mechanic. It’s a jumping flip, regardless of your class. This means that the blurred aura effect of a dodging Thief isn’t available. While I love the dodge animation for PvE since it makes it extremely easy to predict where you’re going to land, this can be a real flaw for WvW / PvP.

Having said that, they are also the shortest race and their melee animations are unique. If you’re looking to play some kind of melee spec on your Thief, it should look at least a little different. This could be an advantage in your favor. Just keep in mind that your having predictable dodge jumping arcs is the price that you pay for these other advantages.

We are Test Group F. (Don’t ask about what happened to the previous Test Groups.)

s/p with Signet of Malice. Kill everything. Loot everything. Mine everything. Craft everything. Sell everything.

When crafting, you use less for more exp when you use discovery.

By doing all of this I managed to get to 80 in under 2 weeks. With full exos.

I’m an Asura thief and while that alone makes it harder for enemies to see your animations (e.g. C&D), it is a double-edged blade as it also makes it more complex to judge ranges and land your own attacks.

I leveled with D/P as perma blind is superb in PvE (use.. something else on Dredge). Craft yourself from 50-60 or 70-80 because Orr is b-o-r-i-n-g. In WvW you just need 3 weapon sets, D/P, S/D and Shortbow. Shortbow is used in zerg. More details? Ask.
