Hey folks!

So whilst procrastinating earlier and feeling somewhat dissatisfied with the current weapon combinations available to the Thief right now, I figured I’d attempt to ‘design’ my own weapons, theorycrafting what I believe would be an ideal weapon to spice things up for Thieves at least, and could also provide deeper customisation and variety to other Professions too: the Kama!

The design/concept basics are just below and well, I’d love to hear opinions and constructive criticisms on this completely arbitrary tangent I went on!

TL;DR Version: It’s a slow day and I do random crap when I’m bored, now I want to justify the fact I’ve wasted 40 minutes brainstorming this out!

Kama – Exotic melee weapon that provides mobility and condition damage.
Weapon applications for Thief.

-Mainhand Kama-
1. Golden Fox Strike > Wild Strike > Fox Fangs (if wielding 2 Kama/Kama and Dagger)/Executing Shot (If wielding Kama/Pistol), Decimate (Stealthed ability)

Golden Fox Strike: Swing your Kama into your foe, causing minor bleeding and gaining precision. (1 Stack each, 10 seconds)

Wild Strike: Strike your foe again with an offhand swing, leaving them vulnerable (1 stack, 10 seconds) and gaining precision (1 stack, 5 seconds).

Fox Fangs: Strike your foe with both weapons, applying multiple stacks of bleeding if you score a critical hit. (3 Stacks, 10 seconds)

Executing Shot: Shoot your foe at point blank range, causing more damage the closer you are. (Max range – 600, fairly average base damage, dealing 3x damage at 130 range)

Decimate (Stealthed): Assault your foe from the shadows, crippling them and causing multiple stacks of vulnerability, moreso if you hit from behind. (3 stacks normal, 5 stacks from behind)

2. Dance of Death (3 initiative): Swing your Kama in a circle around you, dealing more damage the further away your foe is. (Max range – 400, caps at 2.5x base damage at 375 range)

3. Graceful Leap (5 initiative): Evasively leap through your foe whilst striking, applying conditions depending on your equipped weapons. (Kama adds 2 stacks of bleeding for each equipped for 10 seconds, dagger adds poison for 10 seconds, pistol causes blindness for 6 seconds)

-Offhand Kama (Applies to all weapon combinations)-

4. Sinister Hook (4 initiative): Throw your weapon, if successfully hitting a foe pulling them to you, causing knockdown and bleeding. ( Max range – 1000, 2 stacks bleeding for 10 seconds, knockdown for 0.75 seconds. Skill would work as a “Skillshot”, with the player only having control of which direction they throw the hook. Should an enemy run into the hook before it reaches it’s maximum length/destination or on the rebound to the player, the enemy will be reeled in if a target hasn’t already been hooked.)

5. Gouge (6 initiative): Stab your foe’s eyes out with both weapons, crippling them and causing blindness (6 seconds on cripple, 10 seconds on blindness)

Offhand Dagger: Same as the regular offhand dagger.

Offhand pistol: Same as regular offhand pistol.

Kamas skin in GW1 were daggers, I would be fine with it. New weapons should be weapons that many professions should use on their concept (for example, the “confirmed” 2-handed waraxe is a weapon that fits with Warriors as berserkers, Rangers as woodcutters and Necromancers as reapers) and Kamas don’t relly fit many of them.

The Thief needs new weapons, but I think off-hand sword with some more defensive set-up (I imagine a sword-sword combination to be very close to how Spear plays underwater) and Rifle with 1200 range are priorities over new stuff.

As comments to the sugested skills, the second one would be atrociously overpowered unless the base damage is incredibly low (250% damage in AoE? ask other professions what they though of HS causing its nerf), the 5 don’t really fit with a main hand pistol (would be better as a possible dualskill) and using the same dualskill that varies with weapons doesn’t follow the current pattern which usually goes on the lines of the set strengths.

PS: There is already a dagger attack called Wild Strike on the main chain.

True enough that Kamas are primarily very Thief/Assassin-like weapons, though they could have their applications with other professions (Axe/Kama Warrior seems pretty legit, right?), I do think though it’d be great for many more weapon types to be added to the game, or even Profession-exclusive weapons that provide a niche role in battle, without being overly-desirable or to become the “cookie cutter” weapon for each respective Profession. Just something I feel could really add to the game, perhaps add more distinction between Professions too?

Edit: Indeed my idea with Dance of Death was for the base damage to be rather low, but then scale well with distance, similar to the Blunderbuss ability on Engineer rifles but in reverse!

I def like it. 2 things tho…
Poison doesn’t stack, you have an ability stating it stacks poison twice.

2nd, Id prefer a chain weapon (like the one from Ninja Assassin) with all abilities ranging from 500-900 and mostly AOE, with that same scorpion wire weapon ability on 1 of them.

We def need more specialized sets tho so builds aren’t being left out with only 1 viable attack in multiple weapon combos.

Fixed! Completely forgot about the no stacking on poisons, hah. As for the chain weapon you have in mind I was thinking similar to that initially, though Kama are generally very melee-oriented in functionality. I think my addition of the skillshot hook though would be great, something similar to Scorpion Wire but it requires the player to manually direct where it goes. (Think Pudge’s Meat Hook ability in DotA/Dota 2, I was inspired!)

Ninja scrolls would be just a teensy bit silly/out of place, no? Katar and bladed gauntlet-type weapons though would certainly be welcoming! Main thing with the weapons and weapons design though is that they’ve been designed in a way that each weapon provides a specific role, and I could imagine Kamas and Katar having very similar roles, yet with slightly different abilities which could cause them to both feel very samey which would go against the seeming design philosophy ANet have of having each weapon have its own flavour of damage/support, so more the case of orange and strawberry flavours, vs. peanut butter smooth and peanut butter crunchy if that makes sense.

Either way, I’d love to see new weapon types for all classes, and exclusive ones would definitely help towards boldly defining each class.

Assassins have such amazing animations in gw with spears and in gw2 it is underwater-only.
And what would be really nice is a weapon set that relies on speed, rather than stealth, to get behind enemy. I miss dash.
