The ones I hate going up against are Guardians, takes me a good while of dodging, getting a few heavy hits in then getting out real quick to drop their HP all the while their autos hit me for 1k each. Then after I get em real low on HP, BOOM, full health again and you can’t even rupt the heal cos’ it’s usually Shelter they’re running. After they’ve done all that though you can usually get the kill fairly easily if you have enough HP.

i lately play s/p in spvp and depending on the player skill there are some classes that can give me trouble.

-engis with grenade and bomb cond spam if i cant manage to burst kill them

-necros when i fail to stunlock them, terror and burns hit like a truck. tanky mm builds can be hard aswell sometimes.

-warriors if they use both stances, cond warrior is even worse

-s/d ele if i somehow fail to avoid their burst

-power guards with greatsword, retaliation

-spirit rangers because of evades + protection. you cant stun or entangle them if they run certain traits.

-pu mesmers because of the blinks, stealth and phase retreat. impossible to stun or entangle them.

more or less all the meta builds. i guess thats why they’re called meta, because they’re effective.

Ex player of PeanutButterJellyTime, Heavenly Annoying and Visceral Gaming.

As a S/D Thief, these classes consistently give me the most difficulty:

1. Engineers, especially in maps like Skyhammer where they can chain knockbacks to their advantage. I never feel prepared for a fight with an Engi.

2. Mesmers and stealth-based BS Thieves, because they’re slippery. It’s difficult to pressure a target that you can’t keep targeted.

3. Warriors, since almost any shade of Warrior requires constant evasion to avoid chain CC, eating a fistful of damage, or both.

Warriors with Soldier Amulet – The Berserker Warriors die fairly easily but the more resilient types are a kittening pita. You have to time your dodges perfectly and sync them with their constant Hambow kittenation while all they have to do is spam Combustion Shot and auto attack chains.

Engineers are always a pain, but also a bit of a wildcard. Again it’s the tanky types that prove problematic, especially if they also spam conditions.

Necromancers, the ones with all the minions are a pita too. Not so much because of their damage but just because of the on-screen clusterkitten that accompanies them making them very hard to target and hit in fight.

Spirit Rangers are rediulous if you ask me. So tanky, a decent amount of pressure and even if they do go down they can instant self-rezz. Wtf?

You know people like to hate on Thieves and sometimes for good reasons. We do spam dodges excessively on some builds and maybe our boon removal was op. But at least you have to actively play the class in order to be successful. It’s amazing how fool proof some of the other classes are in this game, Warriors and Ranger in particular. It’s like playing with training wheels.

I generally can fight and win most classes in a 1v1 scenario pretty regularly, but lately condition stealth mesmers have been a real pain in the butt. Alone they’re only a minor inconvenience, but when they’re in a group that outnumbers me I may as well run. There’s just no point in staying in the fight just to die.

I run a p/d condition build and the only class that I really can’t kill is a condition necro. They can just put them on so much faster that it usually ends with me being downed, and them being at about 20% health. It’s just frusturating. A power necro, no problem, but that condition transfer is a kitten when you stack 17 stacks of bleed on them then they just throw it back.
After that would definitely come engis. They are pretty difficult. Then, well, I would say warrior but I just feel that they either run a glass cannon that I can dodge and then kill while they are on cool down, or a tank condi build which I’ve learned to counter. There are probably other types of warriors out there, but I just fight so many it’s kind of easy now. So instead I’m going to have to go with a skilled thief. A really good thief can be very difficult to kill and I probably only have a 75% success rate against GOOD thieves. I’m not talking glass cannon backstabbing thieves. I fought one s/d thief for 15 minutes, and that was fun. The most fun fights I have, and some of the most challenging fights, are against my fellow thief.

i play d/p
most troubles i have in spvp are:

1) engi nade spammers, especially bunker ones, can’t touch them, i don’t even bother anymore
2) zerker guards, while you can in fact kill them, in 99% of the time they will one shot you
-3) tanky condi warriors or bunker warriors in generall – yeah~~~

Doesn’t help they are also ultra resistant.

- Some specs relying a lot on AIs, although not impossible to beat, because of hitbox blocking, instant heatseeking while leaving stealth, and because their owner only has to focus on defense. And because if you focus on clearing out the mess you either die to the rest of it, or they get instantly respawned anyway.

- Some hybrid bunker specs wich can deal way too much damage considering their tankiness. Yea i’m still aiming at engies here. Some warriors and necros too.
You have to get involved in a looong fight, slowly wearing them out, while even the most slightly mistake on your part will allow them to fully heal back to 100 / kill you in one chain.

ENGIE smap bunker … evin if i am using sword dagger to steal there boons it is crazy hard 1v1 ya run
even if u have a buddy on your side the engine holds up like a mad man
had a pvp match with 4 engine spam bunker builds and that sat at all the cap points and no one could touch them

As a S/P thief, I find the following troublesome:

1) Power/Glasscannon Guardian. So much damage mitigation and stunbreakers.

2) Condition mesmers (blackwater). Such cheese.

3) Triple-stance power warriors. To beat them, you have to severely outplay them.

4) Condi/kit engineers. Just such much pb-aoe.

Of course, as you look at the fight, the poor ranger did everything right,
yet was beaten by an omnipotent, invisible assassin of justice, or whatever.

I use D/P + S/P.

  • Anything with a large health pool or strong healing that has close to perm retal. 2x pistol whip on a retal guard would leave me almost downed.
  • Absurdly over powered healing warriors. The kind that can just walk with orb and shrug off attacks from two glass thieves.
  • The mesmer spec that spams interupts, steatlths, reappears at ~1k range and always makes shadow refuge dependent on a lucky GS 5 dodge. With the right utilities, they can basically do everything a thief can do and more, and easier.
  • Bunker spirit rangers.. I’m not sure on the build because some are easy, some aren’t difficult but take a while to kill, and some just seem to eat damage.
  • The BS stun-crit warrior build. Keep stunning until the target is out of stun breakers, then hit them with whirling axe or 100b with 30% crit chance, fury and +50% crit chance to stunned foes for 100%. Their high armour, health, and ability to trait defensively due to that +50% crit chance to stunned foes trait lets them all but ignore my attacks; just focus on burning my stun breakers until they get that locking stun in for the burst.
  • Any sort of bunker engineer. All they do is run around in a circle dropping AoEs. They start running as soon as they see me, and don’t stop when I stealth. Constant circle with swiftness so a fair few of my hits miss, and I’m constantly taking low damage (which adds up) and accumulating stacks of vulnerability. They might apply all but one condition in the game with one bomb which nukes my health immediately making it pointless to enter the AoE zone. If I start getting their health down they just have to spam knockbacks or set up some turrets for perm immob + burning.

I suppose they would be easier (if not easy) to deal with using shortbow, but I like to be able to swap to S/P. Pistol whip’s interrupt can save an ally from being stomped, while dealing cleaving damage over them possibly downing the would-be stomper(s). Also, despite the nerf, infiltrator’s strike/return just fits my idea of how a thief would look to an enemy: appear, land a few critical strikes, vanish into safety having taken minimal damage due to the element of surprise. Basically, I find it fun to do and it can be used to good effect when you find some good strike/return spots, or to assist a team fight with an opponent specialising in the infamous art of the headless-chicken (usually engineer, guard or ranger) by zipping in and out to apply that 1 second immobilise. (It does actually counter some of those circle running bombers, but not as many as shortbow would make easier to deal with).
EDIT: And of course it’s nice to deal with evasive glassy builds, usually run by thieves. Infiltrator’s strike for the immobilise followed by pistol whip. It can also counter D/P somewhat since pistol whip hits faster than black powder will re-blind.
