What if Thieves were *normal* and stealth...
That’s trashing the current thief and making a completely new one.
What’s the point when current thieves are fine?
What about no? Current thieves are fine, sure they can run away but so can a warrior, ranger, ele and even engineers. In PvP they’re far from OP and in WvW they’re great roamers but that’s all they can do. PvE? Who cares if one class is better you’re not competing with anyone anyway.
1) Remove Initiative from normal skills and make skills work like in other professions.
2) Remove Stealth from all skills and make it Initiative-only boon.
3) Add ability to attack while in Stealth.
X) Stealth will go off when your Initiative “charges” are off, like a counter, ya’know?

Regarding #3, Backstab is an auto-attack, and auto-attacks have no CDs. How does 7-10k damage repeated instantaneously sound to you?

Thiefs are bottom tier class everywhere except roaming in wvw.

I think you’re not getting the point of the thread. It’s not about nerfing, as you can see in number 3, there’s a suggestion that balances the first two. About those auto-attacks, surely they can tone down a bit to ensure balanced gameplay on both sides. Also this is not a QQ thread, it’s simply because thieves are really broken. As I already told in the OP, these changes would balance the profession to match the others.
Out of topic but I don’t think rangers should have stealth from longbow. It’s the feature of a thief! Thieves or any other profession don’t have pets either! Please make sense next time anet. (minions and wutever, not classified as pets because cooldown and actually useful attacks and AI.)
If they ever added cooldowns to thieves I would delete my account and never play this game again.

They would completely remake the class if they made thieves cool down based. It wouldn’t be the same class.
Regarding stealth it sounds like what you’re proposing is similar to a necro’s DS where you build charges and then use their F1 ability to go into DS mode, or in this case into stealth mode. I don’t know how I would feel about that, that’s an interesting idea. But I doubt it will fix anything.
Biggest complaint against thieves is “kitten kitten look at that thief he can charge into any fight he wants and he can either kill everyone he wants to or, if he is overwhelmed, he can stealth and run away. So OP!” This is obviously exaggerated but there is some truth to it. The proposed stealth change doesn’t really address this.
Counter argument to the above is, “You dont want me to stealth, ok. How do I get access to my heals, condi removal, AoE blind and general survivability when all of these things are only accessible via stealth?”

Lol, now that’s a fail, and btw there are still people who are crying around about stealth?
Wow, that’s just sad.
Personally, I run a stealthless sword build. Although this puts me at a disadvantage against most classes, I still find the challenge truly satisfying. What I CAN NOT appreciate is the reaction from the community when I run this way. If I use stealth, people complain. If I forgo stealth, I lose the majority of my condition removal (shucks since condi is the new flavor of the month). Oh and if I win a fight as a stealthless evade build, I get accused of “spamming” and thus am viewed as talentless by the loser.
I think this kind of threads are worse than useless. If we have to destroy a class only becouse they are good at roaming.. well… we have to destroy a lot of things then, not only thieves.
Balance is another kind of business and “thieves are broken” is a boring story.

Aside from the usual QQ/op wants stealth nerf (DOES IT REALLY LOOK LIKE IT?)/etc, I still see no reason why this shouldn’t be implemented.
I do not recall this being such a big problem in other games.. Though the mechanism is a bit different in this game
Ppl are free to roll a thief I guess so no harm there. Problem solved, next ^^
