So I decided to roll a thief at my alt, and so far am loving the class and the abilities. They are a lot of fun compared to my guardian.

Anyways, from my topic title, is that even possible? I am not overly concerned with being top super burst awesome damage, but something that gets by fairly well while being a little more sturdy. (I am noticing even at my low levels that hits from pretty much even a passing gust of wind can take off half my health if I miss a dodge).

Anybody here have experience with that?

I run this build or versions of this build everywhere; sPvP, WvW, Solo PvE, instances, etc. Very high survivability and gets decent damage output through stacking Might via stealthing and dodging since I don’t spec into Deadly Arts for more Power. The idea is to basically move in and out of stealth to stack Might and keep Regeneration running. Everytime you stealth you get 2 initiative back so you can always use Cloak and Dagger → Backstab without ever running out of initiative (unless you start spamming Heartseeker). The endurance back on dodge is always welcome in order to avoid as much damage as possible.

Awesome, thanks Evixy. I’ll start redoing my traits and see how this works out at least in leveling

Equip Dagger/Pistol. On single foes use Heartseeker every time the blind drops. On multi-foes use Black Powder as Initiative allows. Once you hit level 40, have 5 points saved up and dump them into the Opportunist trait. That’s about all you need for general PvE survivability.

P/D is a good way to go. Cloak and Daggers followed by Sneak Attack will let you apply a good amount of bleeds on your target. You can combine this with Caltrops. Also by using CaD you will be in stealth alot so difficult to hit. Hide in Shadows gives you a extra stealth you can use if your low on initiative from using CaD. You can make up initiative up by using steal. Roll for initiative is nice and gives you a cc breaker.

30 Trickery for Malice and 30 Deadly Arts for Expertise. You will be in stealth alot while your bleeds take down your target, also Sneak Attack is a mini Unload.

Edit: Meant to say Shadow Shot, not Heartseeker on my post above.

For me it was initiative + condition dmg build that made my lvling easier.
Most used combo was lure enemy into Caltrops, Deathblossom 2/3 times and Hide in Shadows … if they not die u can Deathblossom them once more because your initiative will be back. Traits that helps are : gives you might, swiftness when you do things and Trickster ( 20% reduced cooldown on tricks = better Caltrops )
And ofc dont forget that Shortbow has Poison Field that is also condition dmg
When you get used to this you can even train and kill more than one mob w/o any risk.
