What's a great d/p build atm?
Talking about PvP mainly as well.
I’d kinda go ahead and mess around with builds yourself. Really see what you what weapon sets and trait combinations you feel comfortable playing with :D
I use this for wvw:

And you can’t really go wrong with the trickery burst spec for spvp:

Edit: Minor build fix

Thanks man, I appreciate someone finally responding. I started out as a thief but the skill requirement was a bit high for starting a game that was so different than any other mmo I’ve played so I eventually rolled with mesmer but now that I’m pretty decent I kinda got bored of mesmer and jumped on my thief and love it. Its such a fun class. Such high mobility and burst. I’d love to roam on WvW, just sucks that I’ve wasted all this time on my mesmer and basically got to start from scratch on my thief. Such a low level. Want to find a way to level really fast.
No problem! Yeah, the thief definitely plays a lot different in this game than it does in other games with a “rogue” type of class. But hey, you know what they say. The first step at being awesome at something is usually sucking at it at first :P
The leveling in this game can be pretty tedious. The fastest way to level by far is to just craft, but that requires a ton of money (esp. now with the release of ascended armor). If you don’t have the gold to craft up your levels I’d suggest just doing map completion and basically every random event that you come across. It might take you a couple weeks but once you get 80 and gear up your toon you’ll be having tons of fun
Just play the d/p trickery thief.
D/P thiefs are pretty overpowered now when played correctly.

Yea, a trickery burst build like the one Shirts posted is a solid way to go for D/P and would be my top pick.
Other good alternatives are:
25/30/0/0/15 – Brings slightly higher dps than trickery, but has less utility
0/30/30/0/0 + 10 – Lower damage, but better survival with SA traits (condi removal on stealth, ini gain on stealth, and regen in stealth). However, this was nerfed slightly to regen less ini from stealthing. Still, this is a good build to learn with if you’re new to D/P. Put the extra 10 points in DA for mug or Acro for Vigorous Recovery or Power of Intertia.
When I use d/p in wvw or tpvp I run trickery burst that was posted. It works very well once you get to know your skills and rotations well. You just have to know when to back out of fights and when to engage. Subbing in smoke screen sometimes is good too.
soloQing my way through leagues…

all is vain

If you’re getting melted by warriors as a thief you’re getting outplayed.

I’m not and I don’t. (Warrior experience and build are always a factor, ymmv.)
However, Warriors are in a pretty sweet place right now and I find it laughable that a Warrior/Guardian comes into Thief forums to troll and tell people it’s a l2p issue.
We all know 410 HP regen a second isn’t overpowered. Not at all.

it melts/is tanky/ and is generally a good build in my opinion. I made a build a day or two ago that’s p/d if you wanna check it out. (it’s on thief forums)

I’m still not 100% sure what you’re trying to argue. Warrior healing signet is a completely irrelevant topic when discussing the state of the D/P trickery build for thief, so is the class I main. If you want to be taken seriously I recommend you form an opinion and support it with evidence.
The competitive tpvp community is severely under represented on the forums and this is part of the reason why. Please bring some intelligent discussion and they may return. I would love to hear their opinions.

Competitive tpvp thieves left (rerolled) a while ago predicting this current state. I recommend you form an opinion and support a reason with evidence as to why.

Your form of intelligent discussion was to offer your opinion with no supporting evidence.
D/P thiefs are pretty overpowered now when played correctly.
to which I commented on the irony of that statement from a Warrior main commenting on a profession that you don’t main. (Read: my opinion) There was no argument to be had, since they are just opinions.
Your intelligent retort was:
If you’re getting melted by warriors as a thief you’re getting outplayed.
to which I replied “I’m not and I don’t.” with the follow up that I don’t win all fights against all Warriors, because that’s just how things go. I’m a realist and all builds have their limitations against other builds.
However, I believe some limitations (and not isolated to the Thief profession here) are indirectly amplified by an overpowered (passive) healing ability available to Warriors. (Read: my opinion.)
The observation that I cannot swing a cat around in s/tPvP without hitting a Warrior running Healing Signet speaks to its popularity of healing ability choice due to the passive benefits. (Read: my opinion.)
Countless self-spectates of Warriors in sPVP (have to understand your enemy, you know?) and multiple videos of Warriors (by Warriors) moseying into blobs, while bumping “Hammer Time” as the soundtrack, then meandering out with nary a scratch, speaks to that as well. (Read: my opinion)
The risk vs. reward ratio for Warriors is significantly lower than it is for Thieves. (Read: my opinion.)
You see, I can state my opinion (implied or explicit) all I want, because a view or judgment formed about something does not necessarily need to be based on fact or knowledge. I respected that in your statement and replied with one of equal value.
However, I have clarified them in detail (for your reduced comprehension) with examples of knowledge gained (personal and observed).
That being said:
- the class you main (Warrior, in case you forgot)
and - your profession’s preferred choice of healing ability (Healing Signet, to recap)
are absolute relevant (and especially humorous) in a topic discussing D/P thief, when you:
- are a Warrior
- call them overpowered (if played “correctly”)
- says it’s a lrn2play issue if a Thief loses to a Warrior (not played “correctly”)
Don’t complain because you inserted yourself into a conversation where your opinions are met with sarcastic observations of irony (yes, totally based on my opinion).
edit: I accidentally a opinion. xD

lol it seems every thread on these forums ends up with at least 2 people arguing their intelligence with another. But thanks guys! I appreciate it. I also won’t be bothered if anyone else has other ideas for builds as well.
For PvP: 25/30/0/0/15 or 10/30/0/0/30, everything else sucks.
Could you post these two builds please (mostly the later as I don’t pvp much), I’m looking to learn how to play my thief (which I’ve had for a while but was engrossed in other classes).
heres the 10/30/0/0/30:
its also known as the “Caed” spec as he would be the thief that popularized it, so try looking him up (youtube/twitch) if you want to see it in action.
Its been around for a while, and since it received no real nerf with the recent patch it may have been “buffed” in a way due to balancing of other classes.
Basically its classic dagger MH play; skipping in and out of the fight downing the weakest opponent then retreating to the backline with SB and roaming.
Specifically it uses the trickery line to have a short CD on steal as well as buffing steal with boons and boon strip. Use black powder > heartseeker through it for stealth > press 1 and then steal right after to teleport backstab.
Example: The daze you get from 30 trickery can be pretty brutal with this. Try using it on a guardian to daze them and then right after use the stolen item to stun them. Its a good way to put out some big pressure real fast.
