What's so exciting about Rifle thief?
[Teef] guild :>
To me, there’s nothing exciting about it.
I’d rather have GS.
Come on though, if we get a new weapon that can be both MH and OH, we’ll get a whole new skill set with X/X, and then 5 new dual skills via Sword/X, Dagger/X, X/Dagger, X/Pistol, and Pistol/X.
Expect rifles and you’re going to be disappointed come HoT launch. Get ready for that dual warhorn thief hype, boys!
Skills:
1.) Scream, nearby foes’ ears bleed for 3 sec.
2.) Shriek, nearby foes confuse for 3sec
3.) Beller, nearby allies gain fury 5sec
4.) Laugh, nearby foes are taunted to you
5.) Trumpet, Summon 5 dual pistol wielding thief allies to go “guns ablazing!” On your target.
is there a vid for everything on youtube? ;-)
I wonder if they’re going to give a 2 handed weapon versus a 1 handed weapon though. A two handed weapon might be easier for them to balance because they don’t have to worry about how the dual skills interact with each combination (P/P being a prime example). While I would like a rifle, it’s mainly just cause I want more ranged options. Although I think I’ll be happy with pretty much anything except warhorn or torch (although a rumor went around a while back about torch being a distinct possibility).
It’s not “rifle thief” exactly. Specializations are sounding like they’re going to be like a new class entirely, possibly with its own weapon/slot skills, traits, and (maybe) class skill. It’ll be the choice whether to be “Thief” or rifle-bearing “Scout” (or whatever they choose to name it) once you unlock your spec.
I’m just excited they’re doing away with NPE.

I think it’s more like, new utilities, maybe a new elite, 1 new weapon, and maybe some new traits… There’s not much concrete info on it though, everything they said is kind of vague in terms of what it will actually bring. The most confident thing is that a spec will bring at least 1 new weapon, and there will be 1 spec per class(upon release). They did say that specs are aimed to fill role/clazz hole(s), thieves have many holes… Plus, given how they love to buff/tweak venoms and traps…

Would be hilarious if thieves specialization ended up with rifle and became basically rangers without a pet ;-)

And called “Ranger”.
Personally I am not too stoked about rifle as the new weapon. What attracts me to the Thief is stealths and evades and ports and all that movement and fluid gameplay. Rifle sounds to much like sitting still at range.
Torch or sword off hand are my own preferences.
Y’all have to keep in mind that the new weapon will go with the Specialization not the thief class as we know it.
So the new specialization may not have the steal mechanic at all or the same weapon skills as the thief.

Anet did say that mechanics change with Specializations. Well Thiefs only have two mechanics.
Think of it like P/P that doesn’t suck. High single target ranged DPS on an incredibly squishy character with high mobility is a match made in heaven.
Rifle can always end up blowing, of course, and we will never use our Specialization.
Personally, I think it will be some sort of a slow aiming long range weapon that allows you to stay in stealth for a long time without moving. It will be useless for anything but WvW where you one-shot Zerkers with it.
so thief going to get 1200 range, high single target DPS from rifle AND stealth? Nah, something is got to give, cant have it all.

It actually would be nice to have it all. Then people would have a reason to complain.

Any new weapon set is welcomed I guess…. But a thief with a rifle just doesn’t sound very appealing to me
the rifle would let players become a sniper.
snipers in games are very popular because its a sniper !

Anyway, thieves will probably have mace because mace would be good to stun things from behind and then steal their everything. This fit the thieve theme

And leave your enemies naked and freezing in the middle of the WvW grounds.

We just get a sniper kit with cooldowns instead of initiative that focuses on high burst damage and low mobility. Steal also becomes a new skill that’s a huge nuke only effective from stealth.
It’s called the “Warrior,” and is “totally changing how classes are done.”

:O do we at least get the same survivability as a Warrior?
It is more than likely that ArenaNet will favor a 2H weapon over 1H only because it is easier to balance and does not affect existing weapon set. We already saw/heard what Ranger (staff), Eng (hammer), and Necro (GS) will have so it is very likely that we’ll get a rifle.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
I prefer melee staff with martial arts inspired skills. 2H wep as well.
can teefs have dual foci? it would just be insane lol.

Of course not, because thief OP, duh.

They should never had rifle — obviously they don’t know how to use it. :P

Because rifle is the least weeaboo, no offense. All these players wanting to be samurai, monks and ninjas just really bug me.
Sorry to bust your bubble, but samurai were obsessed with the arquebus pretty much from the moment it was introduced to Japan in 1543. If you want to avoid the kitten, you’ll need to go hammer, mace, axe, warhorn, torch, or shield, I’m afraid.
Am I the only one who plays Thief to feel like Garrett?
I’d like to dual wield shields. My lifeleech thief build keeps getting buffed, but to really throw it over the top I think I’d like to trade in my daggers for a shield in each hand.
I just need a spammable multihit AOE to keep that leech going.

Now that I think about it, besides the 1200 range, there might not be a lot going for it… like we will remain squishy, and probably slow too (pretty sure rifle fires as fast if not slower than pistols…)
Kind of want the spec to bring a greatsword/dual swords to the thief – with a faint hope that we will be beefy out of stealth and to be able to be in a zerg front-line-ish – then again i was told to re-roll a warrior a couple times (and i have), doesnt feel the same…
Shooting things in the face is fun.

Many people would gladly change the “Thief” name to something quite cheesier I’m afraid.

So our specialisation will be ‘Elite Shadow ninja assassin’?

Well, the thief is a reworked assassin class from GW1. I’d say “Shadow”, “Assassin”, and “Sniper” all might make solid Specialization names.

That would be frightening.

So ‘Shadow Assassin Sniper of Elite Ninjas’ then?
im getting flashbacks of the typical gw1 kitten names

THIS is actually the best suggestion I’ve seen for new Thief weapons. Thieves can use magic so it’s not like a focus would be out of place.
Right now Thieves are sort of stuck at close range, since P/P is pretty terrible and Shortbow is more for utility. While I don’t think long range is for Thieves, a mid-range weapon set could really open up new playstyles. Like if the Foci were 300-600 range support weapons, that could sort of help Thieves in group situations, especially in WvW fights.
It would also be a unique playstyle, as opposed to a rifle Thief just being a Sniper-Warrior clone.
Honestly I would love if we got double foci. It would be cool to see Thieves running around with two of these.

I was mostly tinking of a dual Courage:
I want martial artistic Staff wielding Thieves as “Brawlers” dreams
Or Axe wielding Thieves as “Rogues”
Or Mace wielding Thieves as “Saboteurs”
Or Longbow wielding Thieves as “Infiltrators”
That would be fittign themes and weapon combos for Thief Specializations, but not Greatswords, or Rifles. >.>

Torches: “Plunderers”? :>
being able to just use a mainhand sword with 5 skills is still my favourite idea tho.

Aesthetically yes, mechanically no. Assassin in the first game revolved around Critical Strikes and chaining together attack combos to kill or control important enemies quickly for the team. Mobility was not a hall-mark of the play style, simply Killing Speed.
Thief is much more focused on Mobility and Avoiding attention. Burst is very much a part of Thief, but it is not the primary and sole focus of the class.
I miss my Assassin, but I love my -thief- just as much.

My immediate reaction when I saw those was katars, which would be sweet.
