Assuming thief is your main that is.

For me, intially I wanted to roll an elementalist since I played an SF ele solo capper in guild wars 1. So obviously I wanted to play an elementalist in the sequel too.

In the beginning levels, I found elementalist really boring and underwhelming so I thought a thief would be a good substitute for the level of mobility and solo action I could reasonably expect for a solo capper. (turns out the D/D ele is a good solo capper too, but that evolved over time as in the beginning ele was considered one of the worst classes)

I’m not let down. The initiative system alone makes it worth it. Thief is great at getting away and having unparalleled mobility which makes the class what it is. It is great for solo capping since you can roam around without too much worry and also gank on unsuspecting people. Only thing I hate is the overly reliance on the stealth cheese. I hope ANET gives us more “assassin” like builds that don’t rely on stealth to make it work.

All is vain.

Here’s my list of reasons:

- Thief mobility in combat is insane. Active defense from porting and dodging around is always more fun than just standing and absorbing hits.

- (PvE perspective:) Thiefs have all the fun stuff of a ranger with greater dps, more group utility, and no reliance on an AI-controlled pet.

- Big burst damage. Hitting hard with big backstabs is definitely fun.

- Every single weapon is good. Sure, not every combo of weapons is great, but every single weapon that a thief can use is great in both PvE and PvP.

- Very balanced talent tree. There’s room for a lot of variation in talent trees (well, aside from the 30 in CS that almost everyone takes) and you can make good use of just about every weapon without having to have a very specific build to support it.

- SR rezzing in PvE is pretty awesome. I play the game primarily with my wife, so it’s nice to have a good save for rough situations.

- Second best 1h sword skills in the game. Mesmer blurred frenzy with the 1h sword is still my favorite 1h sword skill, but IS on thieves is a very close second.

I had generally always played Healers/Tanks in MMOs, but I was having fun with Bastet in Smite just prior to launch, and the playstyles seemed somewhat similar. Now I can barely level other classes because cooldowns seem boring after playing with initiative.

I’d have to say my Thief is Main #2. I started on Mesmer to 80, then same on Ele, then Thief and Necro. I dig Thief for similar reasons to Mesmer, namely:
-Mindkitten like nobody’s business
-The ability to take even “crappy” weaponsets (Hello, S/P and P/P!) and excel, if I’m willing to put in the time and effort.
-Mobility/Teleportation
-It’s a challenge, tbh. Some specs may be “OP,” but in general, screw up and you’re Quaggan-chow.

I came off of being a feral druid in WoW for over 5 years. I knew nothing about thief or GW2 except it had some kinda stealth. I’m glad I gave this a whirl. Thief will always be my main love here. Fighting with thief has a certain flow, in and out, it’s like ballet, with bullets.

I got an 80 thief and necro, and a mesmer this weekend. The PvP with WvW in GW2 is the AWESOE! (not a typo, a RL friend botched and we kept the spelling)

I figured that rolling the class centered around mobility and subterfuge would teach me the most about avoiding attacks, watching for tells/animations, being aware of the state of the battlefield, predicting enemy movement/tactics and how to utilise my own positioning as well as the enemy’s to gain the upper-hand.

I was right. Every other class I rolled took a benefit.

i will always and forever love the quick and sneaky character in any game that i play. Ever since my first ps1 game final fantasy 9 (main character in that game is thief-ish) i couldn’t get enough of the way he fought… he was quick, sly, cunning, very acrobatic… no one could touch him, and what he loved was treasure.
After that, the ninja/rogue/assassin type class has always been my character. Played WoW for a while as a rogue for about 4 years or so, then moved on to guild wars 2 and fell in love with the thief and the way it plays. Love being able to dodge all over the place and slip away from enemies, while picking off the ones that are alone… plus stealing items is pretty awesome!
(though some stolen items from players could be better…) :P

For me it was a tough choice between Thief and Guardian. In many other games I tended to play the warrior types, heavy armour melee characters that would charge into the thick of things. Hense wanting to choose Guardian. But this time around I wanted something different, something more agile and mobile. Something that was mostly about damage. Also, the stealth and stealing aspects of the thief sounded fun to me too.

So when they demo’d the game at Eurogamer I jumped at the chance to test them both out. After playing them both, and loving them both, I decided I loved the thief so much more that it has been my main from day one onwards. That said, I also rolled a Guardian and play that quite a bit too. That and the Engineer, which I also love to bits.

But the thief is still my favourite out of those 3 and always will be. It’s play style suits me perfectly and I have found a few builds I am very happy with. It’s quick, hard hitting and sneaky. That’s why I chose, and still choose, the Thief for my main.

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

Rest of the classes sucked.

6 years as a Warlock in WoW made me not want to play a Necro. The ele has no real burst so doesn’t play like the typical mages I’m used to. I didn’t want a guardian. I have an 80 of every other class and the thief is the most fun of them all. If Rangers weren’t so built around their pet I’d probably of stuck with it over the thief, but Rangers are probably the most boring class to play in this game right now.

The mobility, infiltrator stike and arrow mainly. Never really gave a kitten about stealth and I still don’t.
Also initiative (even if i think the ini regen is a bit out of whack atm) sounded more interesting than spamming skill on cd with the exception of a select few, sadly it’s not really the case as most weapon sets are 2 or 3 key wonders, which is the reason i pretty much only use s/p and sb atm, hoping for better days. I still belive initative if done right is far more strategic though, it just needs to be done right.

The only other class i actually enjoy in this game is necro, despise the hate and overall feel of being a bit weak i really like using my necro.

It’s not my fault if S/P is not popular !!!

It’s fun and I like the aesthetics and mobility. In my decade of MMOing, I’ve never been a Rogue class. I was always a Warlock or heavy plate wearer.

I was a Mesmer at launch, but my friend was late getting on on Early Release Day 2, so I rolled a Thief and dorked around. I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed the Shortbow, Pistols, and Swordplay. D/D is cool, but I love swashbuckling. I dropped the Mesmer for the Thief.

I have set the Thief aside for a Ranger earlier this year, the class I really wanted to love in Beta, but I dislike knowing how much is tied to bad AI. Both classes have great mobility, looks to their special moves, and are fun to play, but at the end of the day I love my Thief.

I personally rolled a monk in GW1… Curse you for taking it away from me ANET curse you!!!! I cried for days on end. Now back on topic. I picked a thief completely by accident to be honest. Hated the hell out of it at first. Now I wont play any other class. (Seriously I’m to lazy to level another class through WvW) Now I am in love with my thief.

1) The mobility in combat and out. When my group is chasing a person running its usually “Devon can you catch him?” And its off to the races SB #5 with Shadowstep. Blinding powder to get in stealth SB #1 immobilize shot.
2) I can live through anything. People say we are kittens inside a kitten who is wrapped in marshmellows. To be honest I dont die unless I choose. A number of times my group has wiped to a zerg in a tower and ill still be chilling inside after it was flipped. Just because of stealth we can basically survive. Though if i am revealed… I am a dead thief.
3)Burst. I currently switch builds daily to mix things up. My backstab build can hit anywhere from 4-6k on tanks to 7-9k on glass and I have 2.7k armor and 16k hp.

Once again my poor monk T_T

Thief as only class has everything i wanted for my class when i was considering which class to choose.
First i wanted meele class but not magic based ( I was tired by paladin archetype from other games) It gave me warrior or theif……I know now ranger can be effective melee too, but i was new to game and ranger/hunter archetype with pet was another class i played in other games.
Then i liked idea about possibility to swich to ranged if needed, pistols or bows. I dont know why but i dont like rifles. So it gave me Thief.
And thief was somehing new to me.
If i could choose my first character again i would still choose thief. It was hard for me to learn how to survive first. I was suprised how low survival ability i have. But now it is still my most favorite class.

I wanted to play a class that was considered ‘hard’ after leveling the incredibly boring Guardian(hence my lv 80s are Mesmer, Ele, Engi, and Thief).

It was disappointing – The D/P build was the epitome of easy-mode. S/D now is much more fun, but it’s still not particularly challenging either.

Oh well, at least I have a fun time roaming in WvW, where Thieves either win, or don’t lose.

I like playing Assassin or Thief in every game since RO.
I love high crit chance, high Flee(dodge in GW2), Stealth since I played RO.
And before I buy GW2, I read many information about Thief, video & skill details.
I love GW2 thief because they have highest burst , stealth & mobility.

However, everything turns into Nightmare since I really play in WVW
1) Highest single target burst? Warrior can do much better
2) Highest mobility? Why can’t I catch a running Ele?
3) Stealth? What can I do in stealth? attack and show myself? wait for HP regen while Enemies skill CD too? Run like a rat? Look for a chance to BS that can’t kill anyone not GC?

Maybe Run like a rat is the best choice to stay alive, but still, they will said: Thief is OP, they can run away in stealth!!!

The thing that sold me on Thief was the Steal skill. Other MMOs and RPGs have had things like pickpocketing, but it was never really much more than an extra chance at a little bit of gold and some loot, but GW2’s Thief actually made it have purpose.

I started using Thief after I had mastered Necromancer/Ranger. I was using S/P back before the nerf, loved the feeling of it. However, it’s a love hate relationship.

3 Reasons why I love the Thief
1 * It has an very fluid feel to it, very responsive
2 * The idea of being able to summon Thieves to aid you, to just walk towards an opponent unloading your burst
3 * The mind games you can play with it are beyond any other class

3 Reasons why I hate the Thief (And a good portion of the people that use it)
1 * Stealth. I hate it. Always hated it in every competitive game. Impossible to balance.
2 * Spam-reliance. The class forces you to spam things to succeed.
3 * World vs World

First of all, not all Thief builds are able to do that, and the one that is able to can’t do it if its opponent has a stun breaker available.

Secondly, not everyone plays a Thief for that reason, quit generalising.
