Why do I play thief?
I enjoy thief because it’s the playstyle I like, and would be the playstyle of extremely skilled players(No I’m not talking about the “zomg mug cnd backstab stealth away i just killed a bad player” players). Being able to evade and shadowstep and stealth gives you the ability to control the small fights. Although it is utterly useless in zerg combat, it lets reaction determine whether you win or lose, not some gimmick design. I do not like playstyles like guardian where your character does all the tanking for you and you just heal while spamming skills. Thief seems to be more active. Of course you have the thieves who have repetitive monotonous gameplay which is boring(IE, mug steal backstab heartseeker heartseeker heartseeker heartseeker ect. and such.)
Maybe it’s because you also enjoy this playstyle?

this
I don’t know. i just always feel like. I steal in on bosses or trash. Do as much damage as i can and disengage from the fight ( because i’m basically bleeding out at something like 200 hp) i look over at my elementalist friend or the warrior in our party and they do a lot more. they do dps a lot safer and more in general.

I play thief because its an awesome profession. theres not much you cant do as a thief.
Because ninjas. That’s really it. Sneak, stalk, assassinate.
Plus their gameplay is a little more action-oriented so it keeps things interesting.
I rarely, if ever, play my thief anymore (even though it’s my “main”, and most complete character).
It’s just an overall bad class imo. Anything you can do (especially for your team), other classes can do better.
The only thing a thief is good for is running, and skipping things (mobs and such) in certain environments. The best utility thief brings to a party is SR for stealthing downed allies during boss fights and such. However, with a good group, no one should be getting downed anyway…let alone needing SR to rez back up. No, SR is not an excuse for playing thief. There are things like “Order of Whispers Spy Kit”, and “Ash Legion Spy Kit”.
I enjoyed assassins from gw1 thoroughly, and that class didn’t even have stealth. It was just a lot more fun to play. Thief has become EXTREMELY disappointing and VERY repetitive for me. For example, in almost all the bosses (fractals especially), spamming 3-3-3-3-3-3-3 with some 4s and 2s in between with p/p is not very fun, neither is spamming 5-1-1-1-1-5-1-1-1-1-5-…to maintain an extremely small blind field, especially when other classes do more damage in the time you’ve been spending repeatedly spamming a single button.
I play all classes but main a thief. I love playing them most of all, because they are the least forgiving. But when I am running around Lions Arch, I do get this constant urge to steal stuff but I can’t because the game won’t let me

It’s not for nothing that the best teams are Warrior / Guardian / Mesmer based.
Thieves often provide utility within a team, under the form of AOE stealth and blind spamming.
Concerning the why… Well, there are many potential reasons.
The WvW grounds and hotjoins are infested with Thieves. The concept is overtaken by the elitist type fanboys. Most of the designs you’ll see rarely go over an Altaïr, some random anime or whatever ninja assassin they ever cloned the look from. I get that lame feeling everyday when playing my Thief, even if it’s a Charr and that he’s nothing close to what people worship.
You’re asking strangers why YOU enjoy playing a specific class?
The obvious answer would be because you enjoy the play style, but the only person that can truly answer the question is yourself.
I am not an team player, i did not joined an guild, i do not use team speak , i go afk every 15-30 minutes, i play half afk.
I play single player an MMO…
Thief is perfect for me, specialy in wvwvw.
Because of the design of the profession and its utilities. I can enter and exit fights at my own will. I can travel over 3000 units, vanish into the shadows and stun lock any target.
I don’t get what people say about thieves being useless in WvW, because I’ve seen thieves and been that thief that jumps into the middle of the zerg and takes them down one by one. We have so many awesome utilities and play styles, so I never get bored of my Thief
Yes, we’re the most nerfed and hated class, but isn’t that the point if being a thief? People never see us coming, yet we kill them within a few seconds or bleed them dry. If you don’t like the class, then play something else I enjoy all the professions , but my thief is the definite favorite!
Maybe because taking a offhand pistol ensures that all melee oriented people will lose the fight hands down or it could be the fact that if you are going to lose the fight due to skill you can easily dodge out of it.
In all seriousness though, black powder is one of the most annoying skills in this game for any melee profession.
