Why do people think Thieves are "OP"?
^
Lack of drawbacks? Yes it helps more than it hurts but lack of drawbacks is a lie. They can still get hit but they can’t hit you without revealing themselves. When you’re not attacking (to stay in stealth) you aren’t doing any damage. Being invisible is supposed to make you hard to find yet all of your abilities (aside from signets and melee weapon skills) let the enemy know exactly where you are.
These aren’t big drawbacks, and the benefits of going stealth usually is better than not going stealth, but to say there is no drawbacks to stealth is a lie.
Last thing is that stealth helps with the slipperiness of the class. So people are hating on a class, that has no solid defensive boons or traits, because it’s too slippery? What do you expect a thief to do? Sit ther, spam /dance, and wait for you to kill them?
This is how thief plays. If they want to harass you, they will. It’s your job to pin them down to stop them.

1) The ability to be hit while in stealth isn’t a drawback.
2) It’s true you could call this somewhat of a drawback, but the only reason you’d need to stay in stealth is to either position yourselves, in which case you probably wouldn’t be attacking (or he’d know where it’s coming from), or running away/hiding, in which case you aren’t fighting. Stealth is also usually short, so it’s not much down time, and the stealth attack also helps make up for it by doing more damage when coming out of stealth.
3) Red herring, but I’ll answer it anyway. The lack of other mechanics is unrelated because a class with no stealth would obviously be given some other sort of defensive ability. No one is saying thieves should have no way to defend themselves. And I was just saying what many people see stealth as in games to answer the original question of why people hate thieves (and of course if they hate fighting a class, they’ll call it OP, whether or not it actually is).
Saying “this is how thief plays” doesn’t mean people are going to be okay with that. They obviously hate how it plays, and that’s why they complain.
Ok, here it goes… my first post in thieves forums
Tbh i have nothing agaist stealth skills, my main and only lvl 80 is a mesmer and i love using stealth. Also i dont mind fighting stealth classes.
Imh thieves have only 2 things that are frustrating about them:
1- Perma Stealth: I mean, come on, a thief pops out of nothing, i dodge, mirror images shatter and thief its almost dead so he stealths. He reapears full HP again i blurred frenzy, hit him again, he stealth again. He reapears full HP i distortion hit him again and he stealth again and we can go on like that forever…. Ok i get it, stealth its an important mechanic for thieves, but how many times i have to almost kill some1 before i finally run out of cooldowns?? So basically, stealth is fine, i can deal with it, but not like forever.
2- Stealthed ressing: and god this is even more annoying. As an example… some days ago i was roaming in WvW with 2 other ppl. We fought a group of 6-7 ppl who were quite bad so we were whiping the floor with them but…. everytime some1 was drowned a thief stealthed ressed them so basically even when they were quite bad we couldt finish any of them. You can say you can aoe the spot or aoe cc it but not everyone has that type of skills and being ressed from drowning its quite fast so if you need to wait 3 secs for cooldowns you can be sure theyll be up again.
Other than that i dont have much trouble with them. Specially since most thieves i found so far wont fight any1 they cant drown in theyr first backstab. It actually became quite funny to get ganked by 1 lately since i gave up chasing them. They attack me, i get them to 50% or less HP while they barely touch me, they stealth and we each part diferent ways, just like a rough “hi” :P
Of course every now and then a good thief appears and completely owns me but well, they were good, they deserved that win
Honestly I think its because stealth is the only way a thief can beat anybody. Call it what you want, but thieves would have a super tough time winning without it, and its frustrating to the player who loses to know that. It seems gimmicky when you don’t understand how hard it is to master. I just hit 80 thief this week and I have yet to win a dual. Sure, I can run away from anyone at any time, which is nice, but beat somebody with my yellow armor and weapons? At this point they’d have to be a lowbie learning a new job. I just don’t have the DPS, and most players have encountered enough thieves by now to respond moderately well.
just for an example watch this guys video:
this was just the first video i clicked on, i did not even have to try
please explain to me how another class, such as a ranger or necromancer, could pull off the same things.
edit – the guys commentary is so funny though. “Well I noticed things were not going my way so I stealthed” … for the 100th time in less than 10 minutes.
That exact video is not one of the best to show how OP the thief class is. Those players are totally clueless, letting a single thief take them all down one by one.
That crap can only happen in wvw…
like i said it was the first video i clicked on.
regardless of the other players you cannot sit there and tell me another class can pull off the same things.
he uses stealth to be able to take on large groups and consistently get out of trouble.
the other players could be complete noobs and they would still steamroll any other class.
Next question.
