Why is shadowstep broken?
I’m not sure what you mean. Shadowstep has never failed me.
Im not having any trouble with SS but I dont really chain it with any other skills that often.
I’m not coming back, not that you care.
I’ll make a video tonight. It’s breaking for me even when I’m not chaining it with anything like HS or DS, I blip to the initial location for 1/10th of a second then blip back to the starting location without having activated the shadow return, and so I’m typically still in melee range of the aggressor and returning at that point is also silly except to remove conditions.
I’ll see if I can’t find my OBS and record it happening.
I don’t think it’s just shadowstep. It actually happened to me earlier with my mesmer. I blinked to a spot, then teleported back to where I was standing.
Yes, backporting is an issue. Died several times because of it.
Yup, is very very very anoying . . .
The weird thing is that actually the character teleports to the selected area . . .
Then why the kitten it teleports back!!??
The mechanical animation was good . . . why then it teleports back!?
I can bet mi car that this is an intentional behavior from the developers.
You used to be able to Heartseeker > Shadowstep > Steal but since that September feature patch that broke steal completely (surely you must remember those days where steal would go out of range or obstruct 90% of the time before getting fixed) the Shadowstep will just teleport you back to where you were and steal will out of range onto 5 sec cd. Pretty sure they fixed most of the bs with steal but forgot about every other teleport.

It’s always had some problems, even before the September patch. I’ve yet to have any more issues with it since the post-patch fix than I used to before the patch came out. Using them too quickly together will result in some back-porting, as will lagging at the wrong time.

Somtimes it even shadowstep to yourself even if you targeted a flat place.

Did about 40-50 matches the past couple days and it happened in just about every match for me.
Specifically shadowstep, not necessarily steal (did run into 2-3 hiccups with steal malfunctioning).
I know I said I’d make a video but I haven’t gotten around to it, but yeah I’ll be running, flat surfaces, and click nothing other than shadowstep and it doesn’t work. Pretty sure the issue arises only while in combat, and other people do not necessarily have to be around for it to malfunction.
Very difficult to work with on thief since shadow step’s primary function is to put distance from you and an enemy so I can cast my heal without being interrupted or at least get out of range to avoid some bad attacks, but when I SS and don’t distance I end up eating heart seekers, hammer bashes, etc etc etc.
i see they still didn’t fix movement/port skills and their interaction with latency and how server handles it heh
i wonder what they did in september patch that broke ports forever
terrain + nameplate bugs been there since launch i think

I´m more than happy they reverted their weird “fix” for steal. I don´t know since when though becausei took a break, but last time i had problems with steal it was because they brought a new location check in place which caused steal to not activate all its effects with the intitial teleport, but about 1/2 second later. It was meant to just prevent using Steal on targets physicly not reachable, like someone standing on top of a wall. But while fixing that was a good idea, it broke the rest of Steal. Fighting S/D thieves as S/D thief was no fun that time. 90% of time Steal just didnt work, got obstructed, or got evaded because of the activation happening after the teleport. Its working as it used to, now – including stealing from unreachable targets in range.
Teleport overall though still sucks since then. I have issues with all of the teleporting skills. Steal, Shadowstep, even the Shadow Trap, D/P #3, S/D #2… all malfunction every now and then.
The shadow step/teleport bugs are a direct result of latency/lag
The shadow step/teleport bugs are a direct result of latency/lag
particulary, but not entirely true… in september they changed how servers handle lag and movement spells hence why people with some latency get affected by the bug (devs admited it btw)
before september patch those bugs didn’t happen
the terrain and nameplate bug has absolutely nothing to do with latency however

it happened with my steal…i dealt dmg, stole the skill, gained stealth but ended up in the same location..
Sometimes it even shadowstep to yourself even if you targeted a flat place.

That would explain why I only seem to see it happening when I’m using it to get the #$@# out from in front of the blobs in WvW.

I’ve had a weird one as of late. Where shadow step the skill would place me facing backwards after using it. Anyone else have that happen? Pretty annoying.

Rubberbanding has always been an issue. The new problem I’ve noticed of late - and it’s not specific to the shadow step utility but the actual shadow step mechanic - is that when I use it, it actives, but it doesn’t step me to the location I had my mouse at. Not even for a moment followed by a rubberband, just no movement at all. I’ve had happen to shadow step and infiltrator’s arrow mostly, and sometimes on infiltrator’s signet and steal. In the case of steal, the steal+traited effects land, and I get the stolen skill, but I don’t shadow step to the target.
Whether this is also an issue for shadow shot I don’t know, as I rarely use D/P. If it is, then it’s even more serious as that is perhaps the strongest skill of that set.

If I understand it correctly, OP means that he does use Shadowstep which work okay, but returning skill is Self-activating?
I have such problem with 3rd skill on Engi’s Pistol which auto activates whenever I target enemy.

That would make it different from what I’ve had. The second skill in the chain is not automatically activated, you just don’t port anywhere. You can still move and port back using the return.

Sorry, I did not mean to convey that. What happens is that I’ll use it 900+ range away from me, and it properly activates but I do not go forward from my original location. It doesn’t always ‘break’ like this, but it does sometimes.
To further clarify, it does not proc the shadow return and so I still have the option of activating that.
Hope that helps clarify the particular bug I have been experiencing.

At the risk of sounding like I’m nitpicking – which I probably am actually because for some reason it just irks me – assuming you don’t mean “process the shadow return”: PROC in that context stands for Programmed Random Occurrence, such as a critical hit. Shadow step always turns over to shadow return when activated, so it’s not a random occurrence!

I simply meant ‘activate’ so I meant that it does not automatically activate my shadow return and so I still maintain the option of using it… if I don’t get downed from a buggy/failed teleport.
Backporting happens once in a while…it’s annoying to be honest
I had severals issues recently with SS as well. It did not even port me away, but instead just standing still, like if you doing InfiSig without having a target. Died a lot because of it…
