Why the Ranger?

I personally do it for two reasons:

This is the primary reason
Same here when i see a ranger i just see a free and typically easy kill. Outside of regen and prot (which i normally steal anyways) I feel like rangers are easy spike targets.
I don’t oppose any ranger buff/fixes… because truly in at least sPvP they get wrecked by EVERYTHING…
:P I am jelly of their +1200 range though, that’s useful in WvW… wish thieves had their 1200 range back…
The only somewhat annoying ranger spec, and it’s not because it’s hard to deal with… is the one that uses a lot of spirits… :/ It’s annoying to tab to a spirit or to target a spirit by accident and start attacking it. That’s about it though…
Hope you guys get some dev love…

Hey,
I’ve been playing a Ranger for a bit in PvP and have noticed that often a Thief targets and hunts me down, ignoring everyone and everything else.
Is there a particular reason for this or just bad luck?
Most rangers tend to not block/dodge. A lot of rangers tend not to strafe or kite either, making backstab a relatively easy setup with having the AoE pressure to push me off (such as a necro or bomb engi has). Occasionally I’ll run up against one that I can not touch, but those are very few and far between.
There are a few reasons why…
- If you’re running a non-Spirit Ranger, then you’re more than likely going to be vulnerable in some way or another. Rangers simply don’t have many defensive mechanics without Spirits, which makes them easy to take down.
- If you’re running a Spirit Ranger, then you’re going to be a large target for thieves simply because of the amount of team support you have, and the fact that many, many players (myself included) despise Spirit Rangers anyways.
- Thieves are more of a single-target class anyways, even with SB and general cleave. A lot of a thief’s strategy in a fight or a game is simply to hunt down one player and harass him/her into making a mistake. This is especially true of the more common D/P or D/D thieves.
Rangers overall pose a larger threat than most classes if you’re not aware of them and hence they go down smoothly when attacked, just like staff elementalist.
Add spirits and they don’t even go down smoothly, but down they have to go.
Okay, thanks for the reasoning behind this. Glad I’m not imagining things…
Long story short, if you’re not using 30 in wilderness survival, you’re doing it wrong on a ranger.

In general anything other than highly defensive Ranger builds are pretty easy to take down as a thief.
Its easy to target and stay on a glass ranger, you go down quick, are easy to stomp if thief has offhand pistol (because blind neutralizes your interrupt and a swap to wolf for fear, or any thief that has shadowstep off CD).
However, if you build defensively-and you don’t need to go spirit ranger btw, and take something like hydromancy sigil for weapon swap, and can stay out of blind fields you can kill most thieves- especially the glass canon ones.
Against a ranger who is built to last, a thief’s only hope is the tree he steals from you.
never been killed in a 1vs1 against a thief on my ranger. i run s/d + a/t with conditions. the hardest matches ended in a draw when the thief decided to leave. i have 102 hours of playtime on my ranger and i dont think of myself as an easy kill.
on the other hand when i play on my thief and i have to face 2 enemies of which one is a ranger with a longbow i target the ranger first simply because most lb rangers are berserk and hit 8k #2 and 3k #1.

Any smart thief will swap to shortbow and use blast finishers to heal themselves fully. If you’re traited right you can do it every 20 seconds. A thief should never lose to a ranger.
I go for the ranger on every class I play.
Bow rangers being the easiest kill in the game.
The condi axe spamming regen rangers are a very hard fight though 1v1. Although I always thought if you’re going to go melee spec why not roll a warrior, which is 100x more effective.

Against a good ranger though it can last forever.
Ironically i tend to give thieves and mesmers the same if not a higher priority when fighting 1vX or XvX. Generally i go by: Whatever does the most damage has to be focused.
WvW rangers often go full zerk and on top of it tend to just stand there spamming their LB autoattack, Rapid Fire and Barrage on CD.

Losing and not winning are two totally different things.
I always target rangers in spvp because most of em run longbow with a beserker ammy ( a lot of use that will do) Not to mention it sickens me that the majority of rangers cant seem to play the game. Oh btw, this is coming from a ranger =)
It is not what you do, but how and why you do it that counts.
Simply put from playing on both sides of this:
The PET
It’s free stealth and basically guarantee’s an advantage while fighting the ranger.
I always target rangers because I don’t like them. Usually they are full Zerk and just stand there shooting repeatedly. To me, it is very annoying and cheap, and I’d hate to get in their line of fire while fighting someone else. Hence, I attack the ranger first.
Let’s put it this way.
You have 2 possibilities.
One, the ranger is bad. This accounts for the majority of cases. The easy kill should be taken first.
Two, the ranger is good. As its maximum effective range is greater than most other classes, you want this person dead asap so he doesn’t interfere with murdering the next target.
another reason thieves target rangers, especially if they are running full glass, is because LB #2 is just nasty. It tracks through stealth, and most thieves know that if they leave the ranger be, that Rapid Fire will forever haunt them, lingering just outside their normal range.
Another reason thieves hates rangers, is well, it doesnt apply any more, but back in the days, if you told the pet to attack the thief manually, it would keep attacking the thief even if the thief ran across the map, pets didnt have a proper leash (now the leash is just stupidly short, gimping rangers and making pets no real threat at all). Many thieves still hate rangers due to the pets instantly knowing where you are once you leave stealth, and in the case of dogs, instantly CC’ing your thief once it leaves stealth.
As for the opposite way round. Rangers hate thieves, because they tend to attack them no matter what, thus rangers attack thieves and thieves attack rangers and this goes on and on and on and on and on. Only time iv’e seen thieves realized their doomed is when i run trapper with. Simply because they try to step close to me and implode from the conditions as a result.
