Why there is not a 'go to' build for thief
Nah, I think we kind of do too… If you want burst/survival you go D/D valk/zerk with SA… If you want a dueling more versatile build you can S/D, if you want the easy way out to faceroll everyone in wvw you go P/D condi and if you want to troll ppl you go D/P.
I think what the thief lack is a build that’s optimal for all situations as i personally find you kind of have to change things based on what you want to do while like warrior you can go hambow or whatever and just kill whatever it moves in whatever context
That’s exactly what I like about thief, there’s no mindless “oh someone told me to take gs so I’ll do that”. I have like 4 different weapon sets that I use for various activities and swap around between 2 different trait setups. It makes things more fun and challenging.
@Delta blues: how is d/p “trolling” people?
I guess he said that because you have stealth on demand, and you can be a really kitten if you just fool around. That aside, d/p has great utility possibilities.
All of the thief builds require skill, and none of them are too easy to play. I’ve played multiple classes and builds and thus far thief has been one of the hardest.
Other classes have that, like ‘warrior for WvW ? go gs and lb if zerg, take hammer if roam’ but this is not the case for thief, and im asking why
What Tier is it where GS/LB is the go-to build for zerg running? It’s almost always Hammer/Sword+Horn in Tier 1 NA.
But ya, D/D used to be the standard Burst-build, but there have been many, many revisions to the Theif class since the game was released; 4 second “Reveal” nerf, Crit Damage vs Ferocity, etc.
These days the build I see most often in WvW is definitely the D/P Stealth/Runaway build. Just throw down a Black Powder, Heartseeker through it a couple of times, repeat until your either your enemy is dead or until they’ve left the area out of frustration. This build is the source of about 90% of the “Theif is OP & must be nerfed TODAY!!!” threads on these forums.
So there you go: the go-to Thief build in WvW is the Dagger/Pistol Stealth build.
The only real difference is that Thief has a lot of viable builds, depending on what you want to do in WvW. If you want to burst ppl down asap, D/P works fine, D/D is a little bit faster. If you want to duel (not gank) people, P/D condi, S/D, P/P or 1 of a few other builds are usually preferred. If you just want to kill 1,000 yaks a day, D/D is the fastest, but D/P will get you out of trouble if you get caught. If you just want to drive enemy servers crazy by tagging Garrison Waypoint all day… seriously, any build will to, it doesn’t really matter. But yeah, lots of options with the Thief class for WvW.
Do u guys have any examples of builds for me ? i am a still a noobie in playing a thief :P but willing to learn

What part of the game are you focused on: WvW, PvE, sPvP, or a combination of both WvW & PvE (sPvP builds are always seperate)?
i am more focused on wvw (roaming ) and pvp right now

I can’t even take this seriously — you must be joking.
Thief has a go to and there’s no other: D/P + SB
That’s it. Roaming, zerging, etc. One build. All other builds are made by rebels who wants to be different.
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
maybe we can meet ingame sometimes if you guys got the time for it
Yep. Add me if you like. Be good to know other teef. Exchange some good tips.

I have to agree here. There are a lot of competent builds out there but nothing can beat a truly skilled d/p player. The build is hands down a killer for any duel. You have access to daze, stealth, blind mechanics which are enough to shut anyone down.
I spent an hour dueling an amazing d/p thief that nailed down headshot to perfection. Almost anything an everything I did was denied including healing. It was sexy and humbling at the same time xD The amount of skill combinations and uses of fields is far more than any set we have.

more like this please…
less crying over being “OP”
more reveling in the joy of a truly good fight and challenge
:)
good on you!
I played DP for a while. The weapon option is pretty kitten nice IMO. But I switch to DD and adjusted some traits. I just think DP can be a little predictable at times. But yes. Very nice weapon set for a dual. Also seen some good SD player out there as well.
I’ve been here since release and I thought I saw it all, until Thursday nights weekly OS duels. Chewed through any thief using any set until I saw some of the most unpredictable skill combinations that this particular thief (D/P) used against me.
It was absolutely beautiful. Anyways, working on my d/p skills now xD

If you think D/P + SB is predictable, then you’re playing it wrong.
You can even fake a backstab by BP->HS, then swap to SB and spam poison field and cluster bombs while in stealth.
You can’t honestly say that D/P is predictable if used correctly…don’t judge the build by its noob users.

Awww. Well. Forgive me if I wasnt clear. I didnt say it is predictable all the time…I mean it can be alittle predictable at time for most.. or I should say most DP do that combo. Bp>hs then backstab.
I wouldnt go as far to say im playing wrong without seeing it. Or assuming so. Anyway.. all im saying is that its a nice weapon set with good utilitis. No doubt about that… I personally dont play that wepon set anymore. That is all.
This is the reason why I actually like to play my thief. I actually feel like I can “play how I want”. I got so many different sets if gears for my thief it’s rediculous. I have around 4 different sets forjust condition, maybe 6 or 7 for power and a couple more for just doing w/e.

The predictability depends on the player playing the profession because of their limited knowledge about the profession and the build’s playstyle. I understand when someone abandon the build because it doesn’t match with their playstyle, I did that myself, but to misjudge the build and assign some flaws to it that is clearly a failure of the player using it is just wrong.
