Why to roll a thief?
Leveling a thief is a pain in the kitten .
For solo play it’s amazing since you have the best mobility in the game, can perma-blind all foes not immune to it (basically you’ll be in a group for the monsters that are immune/resistant to blind).
The cons being that you will die fast if you don’t know how to avoid damage.
Thieves are ridiculously easy (and fun) to level in PvE, just grab D/D, Shortbow, Caltrops, Signet of Malice, and spam Death Blossom with a bunch of traits that recover initiative/aid condition damage and you’re set.
all is vain
S/P is arguably the easiest weaponset for leveling, since it gives you easy access to blind and daze. D/D or P/D condition builds are also viable (for the time being, anyways), especially with with the caltrops utility and/or the caltrops-on-dodge trait in Trickery. D/D or D/P burst builds are also an option, but they’re more difficult and often less effective than the alternatives.
Personally, I use a S/D evasion build, and I really enjoy it. Timing evades can be a challenge, though, since the sword evade is sticky.
For ranged, SB is probably the most viable option. P/P can do more damage with Unload spam, but the shortbow has great utility.
By Ogden’s hammer, what savings!
If your goal is to solo PvE content, then roll a warrior or guardian.
Those are the two easy classes in this game, and they are also the most used for soloing difficult bosses in dungeons.
As for leveling a thief goes, there are a few builds that make it easy, but overall it is one of the most difficult to level.

This or S/P 24/7 blind and evades.
Thief was the easiest class for me to level by far. All other classes feel so sloooooooow.
I just started leveling a thief and as of level 18 I have to say it is far harder than my necro and warrior. I really miss all the aoe that the other two classes have. It seems that you really have to know what you are doing to level a thief at the same rate as other classes, in MHO anyway
Q: Why to roll a thief?
to be a troll abusing the current meta, and to annoy noobs in wvw
& to 1 shot people using backstab
OH Pistol is ridiculously overpowered in PvE; #5 makes you virtually immune to damage against everything but champions or Dredges, and #4 can interrupt hard-hitting attacks, e.g. the projectile spam of Young Karkas. Combine it with a MH Sword to be able to hit multiple foes at once and you’ll have one of the most easiest and boring leveling experiences in GW2.
As said already, sword/pistol makes a great combination, with aoe damage and shadowsteps from the sword mainhand, and control from the pistol offhand, it’s great for solo leveling out in the world. I’ve also found dagger/dagger with high dps gear to be amazing for leveling, the damage output is insanely high, and you dont need survability or control if you kill an enemy before it even knows you’re there. Cloak and dagger into a from-behind backstab, and if they aren’t dead yet, a quick heartseeker or two finishes them off. Thief is a very fun class to play, with a lot of focus on positioning and mobility, and all sorts of fun traits to back that playstyle up. While we’re somewhat limited in actual weapon options, we can mix and match mainhand/offhands for more options, and every combination of weapons works together, is viable (depending on how you want to play), and is fun.
Leveling my thief went very quickly, as not only do we have massive burst damage, we also get a permanent 25% speed boost to help running around everywhere, and shadowsteps for mobility to get on mobs even quicker. As a leveling build, I’d suggest going pure dps gear, with D/D main weapon set and either S/P or shortbow offset; D/D for the massive single target damage, and shortbow or S/P for fighting multiple foes. Traits, I’d suggest maxing critical strikes whenever possible (it gives strong damage and has some very attractive traits), and then putting other points into shadow arts to 10 for perma regen (if you want to be more of an in-your-face player), OR vitality to 15 for spamming dodges (if you want to be a can’t-touch-this player), and then other points into deadly arts for even more damage. As a thief, your main defense comes from killing things before they can kill you, and augmented by smart use of dodging.
