I’ve been running my thief with either sword/pistol or sword/dagger as my main weapon set in WvW for a while, and as annoying as it is sometimes to teleport 50metres away instead of teleport to my target because I forgot that I was in the second phase of sword skill 2, it’s nevertheless saved my kitten a number of times.

As far as I know, the distance on the second phase to the skill, shadow’s return, has been broken since release, in that so long as you use it within ten seconds it will teleport you back to the original position regardless of distance.

Will this/should this be changed? Or will it affect sword/x thief gameplay heavily?

…in a positive way.

Not sure how you see this as a bad thing, but I think it’s essential to our slippery nature. Need more distance to close the gap, try D/P off set. Otherwise, thank god IS can get you out of sticky situations when you need it.

If it is not broke, do not fix it. works great, IS is not designed to be a spamable gap closer. Its designed for in and out mobility and it serves this purpose wonderfully

I once went to use it as a gap closer, when it must have still been on cooldown. It teleported me back and I actually got a short (like 1s) loading screen. That cracked me up. I do wish it had a timer or something to let me know when it’s reset. Sometimes even when the icon has changed it still shadowsteps me back. I guess that means I left the range?

Has happened to me before (loading screen) which is comical, but whatever.

As for timer, the icon both on your action bar and your buff bar will tell you if it’s on CD…the icon on your buff bar tells you exactly how many seconds are left.

I’ve never been ported back after the CD, actually the opposite: i attacked when i wanted to port back, which is usually a product of hitting an attack too soon after casting IS (confirmed bug).

This is what I mean, I think it’s TOO effective as of right now, because there’s no other ability aside from maybe a Mesmer’s portal, that can give you such a huge retreat option, especially when combined with stealthing. It’s also a very low initiative cost for what it provides.

I think it would still be effective as a retreat option if it’s range was limited to 900/1200.

If you’re using it as an escape from a group, it takes very little thought to have one man stand on the visible marker where we’ll port back too, and it’s pretty much game over. Too much cortex usage required for that, I guess, however.

In a 1v1, I don’t see how that would be all that relevant, in that most fights wouldn’t drag on for that far. Plus, it requires a lot of forethought when/where to place it, so it’s not a mindless skill.

I dont think its too effective. I think its exactly what it needs to be. As you pointed out mesmer portal can do the same, except for 20 people, yet our single person abillity is the OP one? really? not to mention you can achieve similar distance with shadow trap. Seems to me working as intended. Also in addition to watching the skill icon, it also puts a infiltration buff on your buff bar, letting you know when return is available

Nothing beats trolling a zerg with it. Set it up top on a cliff, jump down then return back up when they follow and wave to them as they scratch their heads :-P

I think this skill is the only reason i still bother playing that class, along with the shortbow.

Thieves are supposed to receive mobility buffs, not nerfs.

While we’re at it, shadow trap should do the same, not porting me 1 step away from my current location, that would at least make one trap worth picking up. It’s not a thief skill but necrotic traversal should also work like this, at least unlike portal it can actually be destroyed.

It’s not my fault if S/P is not popular !!!

8/10 for the under cover please nerf thieves more post.

The ability is fine as is. Anet is WELL aware of how its working.

But I did have a buncha players accuse me of haxxing because of it LOL

I love it, personally. It’s what the thief is all about, and if stealth was somehow taken out of the game, I hope something like this would replace it.
