WvW S/D Thief?
I been using 2/0/0/6/6 with pack runes. It’s pretty fast and is effective against classes that rely on boon upkeep (guards, eles, mesmers, engineers) but burst builds tend to cut you down quick if you don’t time your evades, specifically warriors, backstab thieves, and pretty much any other zerk burst class builds.
Hi everyone!
I am curious about s/d thief in wvw. What is the meta there now in terms of traits, armor, and runes. I am just returning from a 6 month break so I was curious. I was running a 10/0/0/30/30 (2/0/0/6/6 now) build a while ago. Is that still viable? I heard that it is for Spvp.
Thanks!
It’s great both talking wvw and spvp; combine it with strength runes and berserker gear and you’ll see what the hype’s about.
I’d recommend Ogre runes with exotic armor as a cheap alternative to Strength/Ascended by the way.
Now as to the post above, Pack runes are not good in my opinion because you already have a very decent fury uptime and 100% swiftness using steal and dodges.

False, Pack runes all the way.
I’d say centaur runes only because the -50% cripple makes u so op, chill and immobilize typically don’t last that long and u could just withdraw or teleport for those 2. I think that’s all the slows in the game so you and your perma swift can just zoom everywhere around the enemy.
Not as much damage as you could have but it does well. Also that group swiftness plus all your other boon buffs help your havoc team out lots. (poor mesmers).
Awesome, thanks for the replies!

Why Pack runes?

Why Pack runes?
Actually, I’m curious too
Because they basically give you perma fury. I wouldnt say theyre straight up better than strength, id say theyre about even. But they are a lot less expensive too
The swiftness boon duration means you typically don’t have to spam dodges because I think you need about 5-6 dodges between steals to maintain perma-swiftness running strength runes. In practice, this means if you encounter someone while travelling you have like maybe 1 dodge or less at the start of the fight. I kind of prefer to have more than that so Pack runes give more survivability. The 7% dmg is practically the only thing that trumps Pack runes, but that is somewhat compensated with more fury upkeep + 125 precision.
I also wouldn’t say Pack runes > Strength runes, but I wouldn’t say Pack runes are bad either. Pack runes in a small group play rather than solo roaming I’d say has a bit more mileage too.

Use strenght runes if you like to follow meta and dodge/evade around to stack might, get the 10% dmg modifier and spend as much time in evasinon frames as possible. It’s actually very effective but don’t be surprised if your opponent gets bored, very few people enjoy fighting someone who uses dodges as a prevention no matter what the enemy is doing rather then reaction to the combat. Of course you can use that build and play the way you want, it just doesn’t seem to be like that with vast majority of acro S/D thieves I’ve met in WvW. As long as you can keep your might stacks safe, strength runes are great. 25 stacks of might + 7% dmg is nothing to joke about.
With Pack runes, you get same amount of power as with Strength + 125 precision, which is not affected by boon stealing/corruption.You can still stack might with Pack runes but it’s a lot harder and you won’t get the 7% extra dmg.
Right now I’m leaning towards pack. For basically 3 reasons. 1). It synergizes better with the small group I usually run with. 2). I can steal might stacks from other might stacking builds. So building my own is not a huge deal for me And 3). I liked s/d before it was meta so I have no problems going off-meta.
I still plan on being evade heavy so I won’t get full benefit from that but I feel that the trade off will be worth it.
