WvW vs Ranger/Warrior
Warriors can eat up thieves if the thief makes a mistake. I play a tanky condition thief and a semi glass semi tank warrior using
Greatsword and Axe/Shield are powerful. I wouldn’t even dare face a glass cannon warrior if he is with multiple people. They dish out a lot of CCs, and if you get caught in one they will drain your health faster than any other class. Nothing is worse than getting stunned, evicerated, knocked downed, and 100B’d before you can get up. I usually pack stun breakers to help remedy it, and it works well. Just be aware
NO MISTAKES!
Versus rangers it’s pretty much roflstomp. I’ve never had trouble with a ranger…honestly. All other classes have an equal chance against me if they are skilled(I haven’t lost a 1v1 in 2 months against any class including nasty S/D thieves >_>), especially guardians. But I’ve never had trouble with a ranger…
I find it funny that melee rangers are better than ranged rangers, however.
you can easily win against rangers, mostly because they run in a glass cannon range build,
i have not seen a melee ranger in my entire wvwvw career,
but i have seen alot of melee rangers in ranger thread, and i must admit they are becoming skilled and deadly,
generally no problm with ranger but there is a nasty trap build i seen a good ranger using its all meta anyway.
Right now ranger mostly are still running around with SB/LB a good ranger has a sword on them. More thieves seem to be moving toward S/D as an alt set instead of all thieves running SB.
Usually a class might be considered weak until someone makes a build public that the lemmings can copy and paste. See elementalist bunker. It was around in sPvP before it hit WvW.

It can go either way on both classes, but I’d say I’d prefer fighting rangers. I haven’t seen too many run trap builds in WvW, and overall that is the real killer for thieves. I have had tough fights with rangers, but overall I’d say it was because they were tanky + evasive, and couldn’t exactly kill me either.
If all things being equal, warriors can easily rip thieves apart. I’ve only run into a few who really know what they are doing, but they are definitely out there. Typically, the high burst warriors who play intelligently enough to feint their charges / burst are very dangerous for most thieves. Add to that warriors have excellent melee damage, higher than thieves even, and stealth isn’t much of an asset if the warrior knows where the thief is heading.
Typically a thief relies on putting the enemy on the defensive as fast as possible, but the warrior has the tools and DPS to easily turn the tables on the thief, if nothing else with endure pain which forces thieves to back off for a second.
Most rangers suck because they want to pew pew things to death. While that’s not bad choice of weapon they need to have melee as well. If I played a ranger my bow would be my secondary weapon. Maybe no bow at all.
Warriors can instagib most classes if their opponents make a mistake and get caught by a frenzy+hb+bc.
Rangers can kind of the same but only as melee and not as well as warriors.
Trap builds work in PvP because you need to take points, so the ranger can just pre-emptively drop traps, wait for someone to show up, then drop a second set of traps after the first set activates. Additionally, since you want to cap points, they beats you by either forcing you off points due to too much condi dmg, or you get off point to avoid condi dmg (and they are taking shots at you with their shortbow during the meantime). This particular strategy won’t work in WvW, so it’s much easier to fight rangers in that game mode. Not to mention pets are completely useless in WvW as they melt to AoE.
Warrior vs thief match-up doesn’t really change between WvW and PvP. Warrior is just trying to bait out stun breaker, then go for immob/disable > swags (or whatever weapon they are using). Of course, warrior is just as limited in traits in WvW. Instead of needing mobile strike and leg specialist, you almost have to commit a large amount to defense line to ensure you survive long enough to do anything in the front line, so they probably are less dangerous and hurt less than PvP warriors.

Some Thieves are tough on my ranger (P/D)
however i’ve never had trouble on either my Thief or my Ranger with a Warrior 1v1

Part of the problem here is that Rangers currently need a lot of help and they’re not getting it in recent patches (I’m waiting for something serious before starting to level my Ranger character).
The few Rangers that gave me problems used strong long distance bursts (1500 range on longbow through traits to get advantage over our max of 900 range) and snares, including ranged pets (melee pets give use free invisibility as they’re a body to hit with Cloak and Dagger) with snares (Spiders are very good for this).
You will need luck as he might heal against your initial burst, getting stealthed with the Heal (most thieves will only stealth by hitting you as the utility stealths are long cooldown “get me out of this fight” skills) and getting close to you, at which point you will need to get heavy on snares and evades.
PS: If you see a magical tree popping, try to get the fight far from it as it gives regeneration to the Thief (he steals the seed from you) and is a Water Combo like your Healing Spring skill. Most P/D Thieves will use their first stealth to plant the tree and use Sneak Attack which will combo 5 times through it.
The answer is simple…Who ever has to work harder will lose. A thief vs ranger a ranger is already at a disadvantage because they want there enemy to come right at them and kite while “phewing” them to death. A thief can easily get around most of the stuff a ranger has to offer and go right in and shatter there glass jaw. A warrior on the other hand presents a whole arsenal of stuff that can shread a thief. For great justice, bulls charge,frenzy,100b,SWAP, shield bash, eviserate = one dead thief. Only time I have ever lost to a thief with my warrior is they got the drop on me while I was talkin on map/guild. And even then I can turn the table on them if I have stomp on. Easy way to explain this is player skill.
Ranged Rangers, I usually never have problems with in WvW. PvP is a different story because of traps. Rangers in PvP consistently put me down because of this. In general if they switch to great sword or sword/offhand it gets tougher. Good tanky melee rangers put up a good fight and hard to take down for me. Also have to mention rangers are great in other aspects such as defending keeps.
Haven’t had a problem with melee warriors either. Right now I’m running a thief with the “slayer build” a dude posted earlier, but with full berserkers, still built 0-10-30-30-0 d/p. My survivability is only in those lines and those traits + food. d/p allows that I always engage in stealth (rather than having to steal) or engage with skill 5 → 2 → steal so I never get charged, and if I do I i just withdraw or perma stealth till I need to re attack. I can draw the fight out long enough for melee dps warriors to lose duels. Ranged dps warriors are no problem either.
as a ranger running a regen bunker bm any thief not running p/d cond build either dies or runs…conod build is a long drawn out fight that can go either way
i run ranger in spvp alot, and i can get kill thieves almost 100% of the time on even footing, or make them have to retreat. its only really a prob if they get the jump on me while im dealing with someone else. thats in trap/cond/toughness build, the traps and dodges, with conditions ticking between stealths make it tough for a thief to go toe to toe.
my main is a warrior however, and any half decent thief will get me pretty much on any build aside from insta-gib hb…but then its more of a question of who hits first. i find if i hit with bulls i win, if they hit first they’ll win. i’ve had a few occasions where they stand in hb and die before they kill me, but they were poor players.
so a decent ranger is definately the bigger threat. again this is mostly from spvp, but i can’t see it changing much in wvw, and my warrior i do wvw alot.
In WvW, who do you find easier to beat, Ranger or Warrior ?
Rangers.
