crit vs con
crit always wins but cond is easier b/c all you have to do is drop caltrops and run in circles while shooting with pistol mainhand. Ofc there’s more to it but zerker takes more skill to stay alive and rewards with higher spike and sustained. You also look like a complete noob and will get kicked from dungeon if you stand in the back of the pack with pistol main hand or just spam db over a single target over and over.

For WvW roaming…
Both are useful, both are easy to play, both are strong.
Get both sets of gear, and play what you feel like atm.
While I personally run a P/D condition thief , I feel that a direct damage thief is ultimately far more versatile and rewarding to play.
I favor P/D, because I’m at my most comfortable hovering just a bit outside of melee range. It’s a set that is almost exclusively ranged, but because Cloak and Dagger is melee, you can’t wander too far from your target, else you lose a massive chunk of your damage. Being able to cripple at-will ensures I’m in charge of the size of that gap. Because of all of that, it suits my comfort zone.
I’m currently debating the viability of abandoning condition damage on the set. The main problem with condition damage is that it’s a war of attrition. You dot up the enemy and wait for them to bleed out. Thieves, by their nature, aren’t built to play the waiting game. They’re squirrelly, bursty and, when their bag of tricks is exhausted, flimsy. If you’re comfortable with a “get close, burst down, get out” play style, you’ll probably get the most from that.

I play a full zerk DPS/Regen thief. I roam and I also do dungeons from time to time. This build allows me to play very aggressively but still have the same survivability as my healing guard. The one flaw I would say in this build is that there are so many choices in traits that it’s easy to make a bad mix and not enjoy yourself. I use D/P SB and I will usually just run into the side/back of a zerg take out 3-5 people and run off. Same with roaming in a group. The idea is that when I go into stealth I gain 2 more initiative and when I steal I gain stealth. I also regen about 349 per second in stealth and can hide in stealth for about 4 seconds. This allows me to regen and continue dropping 9k’s on unsuspecting zerglings.
I’ll suck volcanus for stability.

I hope you are kittening kidding me. Of all classes, thief has BY FAR the best skills and abilities to play time when they need to.

Until they get hit by a stray aoe and lose half their hp or run out of initiative trying to buy time while not attacking and giving the enemy all the time they need. If you didn’t notice, condi thief barely has any conditions. They are easily cleansed so they need to be relentless.

The vast majority of the thief’s staying power is avoidance. No profession can completely avoid damage as well as a thief, but while they’re avoiding hits, they’re often not dealing damage either. Things like stealth, dodging and kiting can put a lot of downtime on the thief. That sort of mitigation just favors burst damage. I’m by no means implying the condition thief can’t do his job. Like I said, I run one. The stars just don’t align as well as they do for a bursty thief.

Best condition thief I’ve seen. doesnt even have shadow refuge in most of those fights and is constantly outnumbered

Good player, easily counterable build, very strong vs those without many condi removals. The condis that guy used was BLEED, vuln (from cnd), blind (from utilities), and cripple (from dagger 4). He didn’t even have poison on steal so that’s 1 less damaging condi. The first condi out of those to get cleansed will be bleed every time. If you didn’t notice, he was relentless the entire time so he could keep the condis on. Sounds like I was spot on. What’s the point of this video?

P/D Condition thief is stronger overall in WvW, moot in PvE
They actually have quite a bit of conditions
Mine personally has
Burn
Bleed
Poison
Cripple
Blind
Vulnerability
You also may get some conditions from your steal trait. Gunk for instance

sneak attack through gunk = 5 confusion stacks. it’s nice. But what do you use to burn your foes?

um Rune…doh!
@OP
Why choose either or and not both?
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.

PvE…..LOL. Try a hybrid build Power/Condi, just to give your opponents a chance.
xD ahahahahah……pve, lol.

Since there’s a definite cap on condition duration (100%) I took out the standard krait, centaur, and afflicted runes and changed it out for balth runes. Extremely useful and every 30 or so seconds I deal 7-8 seconds of burning which ticks for 720 damage on average.
You condition duration will go down though. The difference for me was about 1-1.5s on sneak attack but I switched out my carrion weapons for givers.

Well played. Though I must add, that guardian he fought in the beginning is just beyond bad. Probably one of the worst I’ve seen.
