hey guys, i haven’t played gw2 in years now and i recently bought HoT and wanted to try thieves out. I’ve done a lot of research on reddit, forums, youtube and streams on twitch and the general consensus is that thieves are not in a good state for PvP.

That being said, i used to play a warrior and without any knowledge of it back then it was very easy for me to play it and just face roll in PvP. I’m currently a full time student so I won’t be able to dedicate more than 1-2 hours a day to playing a thief. What really attracts me is the fast pace combat and style and i like dynamic fighting. That being said, would anyone mind sharing some honest opinion of thieves now in terms of both pvp + pve? I’m more of a solo player and i like seeing high number damages.

Also i absolutely love the playstyle and gameplay of dagger and dagger despite it not being very popular.

All insights are appreciated and welcomed! Thanks in advance

I am pretty new to sPvP, so I am sure the more experienced players can give you deeper insight on that front, but here are my two cents…

PvE:
We bring a lot of DPS.
We bring Stealth on Demand.
That’s… It, really. To my experience we’re pretty good at shattering break-bars too.

sPvP:
We run across the map, decap points and +1 opponents.

From what I hear…
In 1v1 fights, you really gotta know what you’re doing to be effective, you gotta play really hard as a thief to be half as effective as a lazy day on another class.

This I can’t confirm myself as I only really play thief in sPvP, and while I find it true that 1v1’s are difficult, as I rarely win out against classes like Scrappers, Dragonhunters and Warriors, but at the same time, I never DIE unless I make a crucial mistake or get overly eager to kill someone.

Thieves have an amazing amount of freedom, I find. We can choose exactly when to engage and disengage an encounter and we dive in and out of combat freely. Pinning us down is really hard, and as soon as things go sour we can high-tail it and be across half the map within a couple of seconds, much to our opponents dismay who desire nothing more than to crush our faces into the dirt.

We are fun, but we don’t have much of a presence in a match either. At the moment, we’re the best runners in the game… For better or worse.

There are so many better meta classes in sPvP and WvW right now. Thieves are still strong in packs in WvW. They are solid WvW roamers due to their high mobility but struggle against well played meta classes. They aren’t very good in sPvP since other classes now have solid mobility for the decap aspect.

They have always been a drag in PvE and still are. There are a couple builds that work but none that are strong meta.

The have always been a drag in PvE and still are .

News to me, but ok.

@OP: D/D in PvE (every other set is subpar in PvE – but it depends on the situation)
Nowhere else – classes have got too many passive and active blocks, it’s rare that you can land your CnD. In PvP it’s even worse due to the lower damage, so you’re high risk “no reward” there.
And, except for 1 shot builds, D/D has always been the hardest to pull off anyway.

ETA: Condi D/D works in wvw – I always forget condi D/D… but it’s a completely different playstyle and probably not what you had in mind.
