Guild Wars 2

this is one of my favorite traits (VIII on the shadow arts path, steal grants 2 seconds of stealth), and yet, about 50% of the time, using steal will grant me every bonus traited into it except stealth. what’s worse, i get the stealth cooldown, and the stealth attack is never used (i’ve tested with pistols, since they’re very easy to discern from the normal attack to the stealth one), my stealth simply isn’t triggered.

so what is it? it looks like a bug to me, but maybe it’s some secret, unmentioned cooldown.

Steal doesn’t interrupt your previous action, it teleports you mid-action. So if you’re doing something and you press steal, you teleport then break your own stealth when the attack finishes. Make sure you aren’t doing anything when you steal. To avoid this, I just dodge then steal or time it right after my attack animation.

I have heard that when you use Hidden Thief, if you’re MHing a dagger or sword, it’s fine, but a SB or Pistol somehow auto-shots and breaks you ASAP.

ive noticed that as well.

Auto attack with ranged weapons break stealth, so turn back to enemy before hitting steal, what will stop auto attack for a while.

shouldn’t steal just break your action? i don’t see any benefits to steal not breaking the attack, it’s not like thieves have long charge attacks that would benefit from a teleport/shadowstep.

Stealth stops auto attack, but a projectile which is already in mid-air, breaks it 0,1 sec later.
Short bow projectiles are slow and bounce between enemies, so it’s very hard to control them – don’t use short bow with this trait.
Pistols are a bit better, but this bug also happens very often, if you don’t pay enough attention.

In addition to not breaking your current action, you can steal while: Feared, Dazed, and Stunned.

Also, Steal with Hidden Thief will proc an auto-attack from a bow. I know this painfully well from attempting to move around Orr quickly.

Yes, it happens all the time with daggers too. Every other stealth ability automatically stops attacks so they don’t break it, yet this one doesn’t.

@Shadow Phage - it seems that you can use it while immobilized too IIRC, but it won’t break stun. so essentially, you teleport to another place, but remain stuck.

as far as i know, i don’t have any traits that explain that behavior.
