new changes to thief
Wait, what happened with infusion? Cuz that trait is pretty much crucial in wvw. Seeing how I run d/d in wvw i’m losing my blind on stealth and infusion as well? I could live without infusion but the loss of blind on stealth will hurt.
It’s gone unfortunately. Apparently, they mentioned that they would compensate this by tweaking the initiative regen times, but that has yet to be seen…
The changes to the Shadow Arts line are basically a huge collective nerf to the D/D weapon set. It’s the main reason why I’m not happy with them.
Where can i watch the video to see the changes?
Last Refuge still exists :/
EDIT: Yet they removed Infusion
Yeah, don’t you just love that.

It was a live stream, so I don’t think it’s up anywhere yet.
Dulfy.net has some of the changes up however, including the thief trait changes.

I’m honestly beginning to think their trolling us now… There’s no way that they would STILL leave that trait exactly how it is after all the complaining we’ve done about that specific trait unless they are intentionally trying to rub salt in the wound.

Wow some MAJOR nerfs in there

I know… And to think I was optimistic when it was announced that changes would be made.
Given Anet’s track record for thief “balance” changes, I should have known better…
Anyone notice all the might stacking traits are gone?

major kick in the nuts. I hate last refuge, its gotten me killed more than its ever helped me.
Infusion of Shadow was (more or less) rolled into Shadow’s Rejuvenation. That trait does some serious work in this configuration.
Not sure what people think they’re seeing in that Acrobatics line. Fluid Strikes is gone, Feline Grace sledgehammered. What exactly do you want to go into Acrobatics for?

WvW – 60606 S/D or 66600 Backstab OP…
PvP – 66006 D/P looking pretty kitten good.
Get ready for all the crying people. It will be strong!

I guess i’ll be going 6/6/6/0/0 from now on. still gonna stick with d/d, I just like it too much even if I do lose the blind on stealth.
Hey anet, I don’t need any trait in the Master line of Shadow arts – and yeah, I’m certain that I don’t need them – all of the traits in that tier are for group play – but I am a solo roamer.
I’m currently running IV VI XI in SA, so the first 2 are adepts and with the new system I wouldn’t be able to run that build anyway, so I hoped you would’ve put one of them in master so I can still be a happy D/D thief. But for some reason an adept trait now becomes a grandmaster trait.
O well, just gotta wait and see when the changes go live.
Kind of waiting on the elite spec details too…
The fact that last refuge has been left as is just shows that they’re on their own agenda.
Well at least they removed the random shadow step from hard to catch, guessing that’s just a coincidence.

agreed!
the 1 trait thieves want gone and have been complaining about for as long as the game existed, they don’t remove
yet they take away the ones people like
I honestly dont think they even play their own game
SA line is interesting for both the minor blinding powder and the master trait descent of shadows.
These are both blast finishers. The new descent of shadows trait also triggers blinding powder on a steal meaning steal becomes a blast finisher.
So now. Assuming you have full SA and take the trait descent of shadows and steal into a smoke field.
Is that 9 seconds stealth after a steal?
The synergy with the p/p weapon set also increases in the SA line now utilizing the number 5 skill with some combination of smokescreen/BP as utilities and you gain several sources of stealth with the p/p set which will allow rejuv to kick in and get that 50 percent less damage while in stealth.
It intriguing to say the least.

I’ve mained a Thief since launch, with the new changes, I have no idea what I’ll do. It’s just awful. The changes are bad and anyone involved in making them should feel bad.
My current build is 5/3/6, with Serpent’s Touch, Mug, Lotus Poison, Sundering strikes, and Exposed Weakness in Deadly Arts, Expeditious Dodger, Descent of Shadows or power of inertia, and Feline Grace in Acrobatics, and Kelpto, Thrill, Preparedness, Bountiful Theft, Lead Attacks, and Slight of Hand in Trickery.
After the changes, Sundering Strikes is gone (no huge loss, but nothing else in the Master tier appeals to me more), Descent of Shadows has moved to the Shadow Arts tree, most of the back-end Acro traits are total junk, and blessedly Trickery is mostly left alone.
But the problem remains that with the current traits laid out as they are, I would be fine if I could go 6/0/4/3/6, but I can’t do that because there aren’t enough points. If I could break up the currently given 18 total points, it would be 5/0/4/3/6, or maybe 6/0/4/3/5, but again we can’t do that because if we want any of a line we have to take all of that line, even if the rest of it is awful. I can’t imagine what I’m going to do under the new system.I need the Decent of Shadows from Shadows, but NOTHING else in that tree, and the early stuff from Acro, but nothing at the back end.
They seriously seem to be trolling us with this nonsense.
you spend complaining about it on the forums, you’d be
done by now.”
I don’t get it… everybody’s saying that choosing between “Cloaked in Shadow” & “Shadow’s Rejuvenation” means that D/D is dead(er) after this goes live? I mean, D/D Thieves can now have Panic Strike, Executioner, AND Hidden Killer all at the same time! When are you going to need to blind anyone? CnD + Backstab is going to be back up to early beta levels!
Oh yeah, did I mention that, apparently, we all get the current version of “Dagger Training” (+5% Damage w/ Dagger) for free? What’s the nerf here?
They killed d/d on pvp months ago by making reveal 4s and now they r killing it on wvw as well. Im sad :C
killing D/D… S/D full evade kill from new acrobatic XD they wanna see only D/P thief! those new trait is an epic fail

I must not be playing the same game as everyone else because these changes are kittening amazing for every kind of thief. In fact, I would say that these changes make thief borderline OP.
1) Executioner and panic strike in the same line
2) Improvisation is getting a HUGE buff (if you opt for that over executioner)
3) Resilience and rejuvenation simultaneously
4) Potentially setting needle trap every time you heal (I can definitely see people taking this over mug)
5) Trickery is more or less the same
With stat points now separated from trait lines, 60606 will be absolutely insane, providing damage, unmatched finishing potential, great self-sustain, and tons of team utility.
Even if you choose acro, swinder’s equililbrium has got to be one of the most OP traits for S/P or S/D thieves. Imagine how easy it is to evade a random AoE in a team fight, and now imagine shaving 1s off steal every time you do (with only 1s ICD). That is just an absolute godsend.
TL;DR: every trait line is amazing except crit strikes. 60606/60066/60660 will all be extremely powerful builds.
When are you going to need to blind anyone? CnD + Backstab is going to be back up to early beta levels!
You have no idea what a beauty that trait is. Actually it’s my favourite trait.
The first I noticed how it works was in queensdale while farming butter in the cave with the gazillion of bandits. There’s this veteran bandit who puts down a keg of explosive powder- you really should dodge that, unless you cnd when he puts that keg down, you can just stand there, wait until that thing explodes and backstab. To me that trait is really important when it comes to D/D as I need to get close to my opponents to CnD. It’s nice to have all these offensive traits but as it looks I have to say goodbye to one of my crucial defensive traits. EVEN MORE GLASS HORRAY!

This
current D/P builds will be hugely buffed. 6 0 6 0 6 and 6 0 0 6 6 will both be really strong.
Trap on heal skill is gonna be really interesting. Since withdraw will become a trick you can trait for lower CD… withdraw every 12 seconds + spawning a trap sounds pretty kitten amazing.
Acrobatics looks really amazing too… buffed pain response + amazing hard to catch.
feline grace took a huge hit but i don’t think it’s that much of a deal. To be honest some builds just had way too many dodges so it’s a good change
“Hey anet, I don’t need any trait in the Master line of Shadow arts – and yeah, I’m certain that I don’t need them – all of the traits in that tier are for group play – but I am a solo roamer.”
Just thought the same!
Simply get Cloaked in shadow back in Master traits, ANET please.
Its a huge Damage Buff and taking the survivability away from D/D

Or at least put something useful in the master tier. But as it looks I will just get a master trait to get a grandmaster trait and that’s sad.
Keep in mind that theres a chance that these changes might change (a bit) before actually being released. That and I don’t think we’ve been told everything that has been added to the “baseline” (like the dagger training).
What they are doing correctly is that they’re balancing before the expansion, and hopefully they will after. So there’s faint hope that they might make a bit more changes like modifying/removing Last Refuge…
As far as the whole class re-work goes – we can probably abandon that hope/dream/idea since they haven’t done it through these changes and there won’t be another opportune time again for a long while… At most the elite spec might bring something new. Also kind of curious how often they will release new elite specs.
basically the thief got buff dmg like almost any other class. but also some nice tricks with traps.
imagine putting needle trap, withdraw for another trap( at the beggining or end of the skill?!) steal for another trap
and all over again after 12 sec.
so both condi thief and dmg thief can use it alongside with panic strike your team will be needing you to immobilize target and boom it get burst down by your team
trick line now remove 1 condition also nice so withdraw remove 4 conditions
all in all thief become more deadlier (even the d/d ones)
1 question….
But i can put 2 adept trait and 1 grand master trait? or should be only 1 adept 1 master and 1 grand master? Im able to use Vigorous Recover , Pain Response and Quick Pockets?

1 adept, 1 master, 1 grand master.
can’t have say 3 adepts or 2 adepts and 1 master.

This… As D/D users, we can’t enter stealth without closing the distance between us and our opponent, which is dangerous for a thief. Couple that with the fact that we don’t have the shadowsteps and evades that S/D has and we’re left with a set that can do awesome spike damage but at the cost of having little in the way of defenses. This is one of the primary reasons that D/D has fallen out of the meta in PvP and is considered acceptable at best in WvW. Cloaked in Shadow helped to mitigate some of the challenges D/D faced by helping to mitigate those first few attacks after entering stealth and also reduced some of the gap between D/D and the current meta king, D/P. Sure, the offensive buffs we received with the changes are a very good thing for thieves across the board. No one is denying that. But that isn’t helping the underdog set close the gap and by removing another one of its defensive options, Anet is making D/D even less appealing when compared to other sets. What’s more, D/D is the only set that is negatively effected by this change. D/P already has plenty of blinds and S/D was a more evasion focused set and usually went more into acrobatics anyway. D/D is the only one that needed Cloaked in Shadow and since it was considered a lower tier set already, forcing D/D thieves to choose between the blind on stealth and the health regen (both of which are essential to D/D survivability) is the equivalent of Anet punching down.
Honestly, this could all be fixed if they’d just move Cloaked in Shadow to the Master tier. Sure, we’d miss out on Descent of Shadows on steal, but D/D would still be usable. In fact, with the other changes to Shadow Arts and the thief traits in general, it might even become more viable in other game modes, which would be lovely.
(edited by Starsurfer.7209)
I dunno about you guys, but D/P Panic Strike looks so ridiculously strong on paper now. All the current benefits plus Stealth + Blind on Steal + more ini + Health regen. Guess D/P vs S/D will be even more one sided. kitten’s comedy
it’s already not on the same strength but hey! lets nerf underperforming builds and buff op ones like we added sentinel amuled for turret engis #anetlogic
Edit: better example : Panic strike to master trait and lightning hammer nerf

Also, I see a lot of optimism. Everyone’s pants seems to tighten when they open their armory and glance at their sword, dagger, and pistol. There’s a couple things we all need to keep in mind:
-They’re doing this across the board.
If everyone is special, than no one is special. Everyone seems to be glossing over the thought of all the crap we will be forced to contend with from the 8 other professions.
-Don’t drool over Shadow Arts.
Be fearful. I’m concerned for Shadow Arts once they see their errors and attempt to balance the talent tree.
-This is Arena Net and Thief
Brace yourselves, friends.

That’s never been proven.
I’m more than a little confused about the doom and gloom people are spouting.
With the exception of Crit strikes, alot of these changes seem pretty good on paper.
New Shadow arts is borderline OP in any mode where stealth isn’t penalized (IE, conquest)- 50% DR as a MINOR trait, 2 heals, init regen, and condi cleansing. Granted it’s poorly designed from a “Choices” standpoint, it’s still powerful.
Deadly arts – Mug, panic strike, executioner. All in 1 line. It’s also worth noting a few other things. The 10% damage isn’t qualified on Improvisation (it might still be with bundles, I didn’t watch the stream). Also, noted in the link, steals are being redesigned and having their damaging components removed – this (hopefully) means much better access to sustain/CC/things thieves don’t get outside of the stolen items themselves. Assuming (kittenumption, I know) that the redesigned steals are strong, having 2 uses (on top of random utility line reset and possible damage bonus) is nice. Since our usable heals are getting categories as well, improv refreshing a heal is a possibility.
Trickery – almost entirely unchanged – slightly better options for other specs (pressure striking, maybe flanking strikes heavily dependent on how it’s implemented), otherwise it functions identically to how it does now, which is fine considering it’s strong enough to be mandatory in every thief meta build.
Acro – Yeah, the new FG is weaker, but there are some fun possibilities here. S/x 6/0/0/6/6 has some mighty potential if the redesigned stolen items are any good – Swindlers, don’t stop, FG, they all trigger on an evaded attack, not a “dodged” attack (If I’m hearing correctly), which will happen often. Improv tied into all that has the potential to be strong. This trait line is the most heavily dependent on how powerful the new stolen items are, I think, due to the synergy with trickery and Improv.
Yeah, it’s still the illusion of choice in most of the tree’s, but some of the new combos are potentially very powerful.

No doom and gloom on my end.
Just a bit disappointed that Last Refuge has been left untouched, and well the the faint hope of a full rework has died.

1. Acro no longer has the fall damage trait, meaning if I want the fall damage trait I have to abandon Acro entirely, or if I want acro I cannot have the fall damage trait. I want both and don’t you dare call me “entitled” for wanting both things that I currently have.
2. I like being able to dodge three times in a row, even if none of them actually “evade” anything. I like it just because of the Swiftness buff, or even just because I can. The changes to FG mean that I won’t be able to do this anymore, especially if none of the dodges actually evade any damage. I loved being a Thief that could just bounce all over the battlefield and always have dodge available, and they’ve taken that away from me. I am upset about that and don’t try to convince me of a silver lining that does not apply to my enjoyment of the game.
I want more options. I want either Descent to be moved back into Acro (which has mostly junk in the Master/GM tiers anyways), or for the ability to spec into four trees if I want to spec into four trees. And I want Feline Grace back in it’s original form.

Oh, I don’t care. And no one else who matters does either. It’s a PvE/Psuedo WvW trait that doesn’t have any real value in the context of the your spec.

Wanting something is not a proper justification for having/getting something. Wanting to be able to dodge 3 times in a row (regardless of whether or not you’re evading anything) is silly and an extremely poor justification for anything. Thankfully, Anet isn’t making changes on what you ‘want’ with no good reason as to why you want it. FG is certainly weaker, but the entirety of DA and SA are stronger, so it looks to me like a net gain. Whether or not you enjoy the changes is not the goal in mind. The goal is whether or not a reasonable person would enjoy the changes, and at the moment, at least tentatively, it seems like they’re working successfully toward that goal.

Yes. And nobody cares about PvP specs either, except PvP players, whom nobody cares about because PvP is lame. It only exists as a way to round out your dailies when there are two Fractals in the rotation.

Sure it is. I can’t wait to see how you well the 1.0 X multiplier backstab that gets blocked and reveals you for 10 seconds sits with you when it gets implemented. 5) Trickery is more or less the sameWith stat points now separated from trait lines, 60606 will be absolutely insane, providing damage, unmatched finishing potential, great self-sustain, and tons of team utility.
This
current D/P builds will be hugely buffed.
Traps can reveal u and u have to sacrifice Mug which is a good one.
Pain response wasn’t buffed. its the same.
The whole idea of s/d thief is to have more dodges than others. it comes at the cost of damage and other utilities though.
ICD got changed on pain response its 20 sec now
Yeah u r right, but it takes up the place of vigorous recovery now

I wonder if ArenaNet will make traits like Infusion and Long Reach a passive effect once you select SA or Trickery (respectively) as your core spec?
We know that if you spec for Trickery that you will get a passive effect of -15% CD on Steal. So if this is the case for other “missing” traits?
Full set of 5 unique skills for both dual-wield weapon sets: P/P and D/D – Make it happen
PvE – DD/CS/AC – If that didn’t work, roll a Reaper or Revenant.
