thief is about to die
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Thief
Experts at stealth and surprise, thieves can move through the shadows, vanish into thin air, or steal items from their opponents and use them as weapons. Thieves practice an agile, acrobatic fighting style, which can make them very hard to hit.

Thieves are expert in the shadow arts. They utilize stealth and shadowsteps to surprise and to get close to their target. They’re deadly in one-on-one combat using their agility, acrobatic fighting style, and the ability to steal to overcome their enemies. They have an affinity for setting traps and using venom. As an adventurer profession, thieves wear medium armor.
It’s actually been a gradual change due to nerfs, we used to excel in 1v1 due to the very high amount of spike damage we used to be able to put out combined with what we have now, but as our skills like Cloak and Dagger have gotten nerfed, thieves have started to slowly migrate toward sustain builds like SD or PD focused on killing by means other than bursting. Other classes though I have to say, are better at this fighting style. Little know that the Ranger was actually supposed to be the best sustained class fun fact, anyway yeah we’ve been pushed into other roles other classes can do better. That’s not to say we suck, specs like DP and SD trickery are very good at 1 on 1 but I reiterate, they used to be better.

I’ve been playing Thief, but recently shelved mine because of this. I might look into a better S/D build, though. What would you recommend for a good S/D build? Also, how do people land a full pistol whip? I feel like I can steal, and try to get one off, but it usually results in someone just dodging away, and making all that initiative go to waste. I do have success when using Basilisk venom, but that’s a one trick pony and I can’t do that all the time. I’d love some advice from better thieves.

Do you precast the pistol whip before stealing? If you don’t then it is understandable why it results in an evade. Time it to where you press 3 an as soon as it’s about to whip steal, if you do that then they should eat the whole thing with no evade.

No, I haven’t actually. I’ll try that out, as I did that with CnD/Steal and it was really effective. When timed right, will it still result in the quick stun from the whip, or just the damage flurry?
Would the best build for this be 2/6/0/0/6 with Ogre/Strength runes and Zerker amulet Air/Strength on both wep sets?

Well, in essence, all profs should be that way, but as it stands, there are some that outshine others and have a very low skill floor. Take warrior for example, so much of that class is passive. They have passive heals, passive condi removal, etc. You don’t need to be a pro to do well while playing that profession.
I like the logic of, “to do well with x profession, you need to be a good player,” but that doesn’t quite seem to be the case for all professions.
As a thief player myself, I must admit that I didn’t manage to handle the class in the beginning, but after a long and hard time of learning, I finally reached the point where I can effectively beat other players with a unique combo on my d/d thief that takes years of practice to master. From the following lines, that are written as some sort of diary, you can reconstruct my learning process.
1 – 2 – 5: I’m stealthed and confused.
2 – 5 – 1: Kinda nice, but my heartseeker doesn’t do enough damage.
1 – 5 – 2: Wait, the big number from the previous try, where is it?
5 – 2 – 1: Same problem as before.
2 – 1 – 5: Not working either. Man, this class is really hard to play.
5 – 1 – 2: NAILED IT!!!!

I really wish it were that easy. I like the diary style post though. Thanks!
Thief is actually in a pretty good spot right now, being fully viable in all game modes. The S/P, S/D and D/P trickery builds are still a flavor in PvP, and although most people run gimmick stealth builds in WvW, some (myself included) have adopted the trickery style of play in WvW as well. S/P + D/D is still the meta in PvE methinks.
While there have been a lot of just and unjust nerfs, there’s still a lot of neat stuff we’ve gotten along the way. The increased ini rate allowed for a diversity of builds to exist. Changing PW, and splitting LS in two. Heck, even the mug ‘nerf’ is not all that bad. The new runes and sigils also compliment our bursts very well.
What can make the thieves look weak are the few really strong condi builds out there atm, but they are sure to see some kind of tweaking ‘in the future’. But are thieves viable? While some weapon sets with several unmenial skills such as D/D and P/P could use some love, yes, we are viable, and verily so.
Ps. Were anyone in need of advice, feel free to whisper me in game.

Yeah, while trickery may not be “optimal” in WvW, it sure is a lot of fun. It’s decent in small group situations with boon ripping/sharing. Took a while for me to get into it, but it becomes addicting to interrupt heals with a steal.
Thief is in a pretty decent spot right now I think.
The more the meta shifts towards bunkers the more Thieves will be left behind. We had a natural advantage against other Berserker builds (and still do) that were commonplace during the first year of the game.
But that meta has shifted as people learned more about the game. Currently the only thing we have going for us is our superior mobility, mainly thanks to Infiltrator’s Arrow. That skill alone basically carries us through the sPvP meta.
We were never super good at 1v1, at least not in sPvP. We did well against some builds but poorly against others (mainly bunkers). Overall I’d say our 1v1 capabilities are average.
I dont get it…why so much QQ about the thief being bad…i love my thief from the 1st day…and will always keep playing it. There is no biger joy than to troll and kill some1 with my thief.
If some1 is not happy with the thief..just try other classes…probably thief is not for u.
‘Thief is about to die’
Let’s hope so. Stealth is gw2 is terribly designed, as is the initiative function.
