Take a look at my answer over there.
ahm so IP helps alot for health oki but wont i be dealing less dmg ?
Yes, of course. That’s what makes it a starter build. You have to sacrifice something for extra survivability.
Sword and pistol
I’d recommend 56003, with IP as your final trait in critical strikes.
Sure, it sacrifices some damage, but with zerk gear and trinkets and power+precision signet your damage output will still be great with pistol whip (which also is an evade, very helpful for hard hitting enemies).
DPS Benchmarks, Raids, Low-mans etc.
Don’t get used to spam pistolwhip. Doing it on bosses really hurt your party.
in what way? other than defiance stacks which may mess up frost bow 5 i really don’t see the problem. But then again I’m more experienced with other classes than thief

Because you lose a TON of damage using Sw/P against a single target. Sw/P isn’t bad at all against group of mobs since backstab is single target, but against a boss? You definitively want to use D/D.
That, and messing up defiance is probably the thing killing parties the most in any difficult encounters. I’m tolerant to a point, but if i see a pistolwhip on a boss with 0 defiance, it’s just a kick. What Thaddeus said as well. Finally, spamming pistolwhip means you have no initiative for actual useful stuff.
I came back about a month ago. Out of all my old classes S/P thief feels really strong. I sometimes run 5/6/0/3/0 over the meta depending on my connection and group makeup. Black Powder is crazy in a dungeon for melee and all the stacking that goes on. If a group is struggling I’ll just start spamming it and the damage mitigation for everyone just goes up through the roof. I only use Pistol Whip when I need to survive or recover HP. Pistol Whip is only a very slight DPS improvement over your auto attack.
DPS wise, S/P is very strong. It out does a majority of other classes and builds with exception to staff Ele’s, some Warrior builds and D/D Backstab thief, maybe a few others that I’m not aware of.

Easy to check out. Over 30 seconds you can do around 9 Pistol Whip (8 with keeping you initiative over 6, and a last one to finish the sequence) and 3 auto-attack chain.
With a 25 stack of might, fury, might etc. (No ranger). That’s around 12.3k of dps, which put it behind Thief D/D, Ele Staff, Ele S/X LH and Engineer. I’m not sure the exact dps of the ranger after the last buff, but it seem to around the same as S/P.
Not bad at all. It’s a better choice than D/D when you attack 3 targets or more. But against a boss? That’s around a 20% lost in dps versus a D/D build. Significant since the longest fight in most situation are bosses.
Remember that we are talking starter builds – i.e. a build with pretty good dps AND survivability for a user that is new to the class or to use the class in dungeons. DD is higher damage, yes, but if your lack of experience gets you downed a lot then your total damage output will be lower than if you stay alive with a more defensive build such as S/P with IP.
SP wont be
*top-dps
*popular with “pro1337speedclear 2 meta-ele”-dungeon groups
*very helpful in teaching you how to survive better as a thief
SP will be
*easy/easier to use
*high damage output and high survivability at full zerk
*good to go with most casual/pug groups
Just remember to not use #3 pistol whip before ice bow #5 on bosses with 0 defiance and there should be no sad faces from others.

I agree with you. But what I was saying even if you choose to run S/P you’re still doing better then usually half your party if you’re not multi Warrior and Ele. And it has much better utility then D/D. I’m usually not one to accept a DPS loss like that but in this case I really enjoy S/P because even on bosses blinds can be very helpful.
